The Alpina has a 280 HP 3.3 litre inline six, a 6-speed transmission and uprated suspension, brakes, wheels and tires. So, it is an indication of what the E46 M3 performance will be, although it's safe to assume the actual E46 M3 will be even more powerful and perhaps have better handling and stopping. This comparison was *very* thorough, including laps around Hokenheim, the Nurburgring, a wind tunnel test to measure aerodynamic lift, accelration, braking, slalom, skidpad, subjective ratings, etc. The Alpina was the hands-down winner. This suggests that the E46 M3, with an additional 50-60 horses and a bit more torque, the stiffer coupe body, and other M improvements, will have a noticeable advantage even over a "chipped" S4. Of course, rain and snow are another story. It was rather disconcerting when I had first bought the car, but I've talked to some knowledgable diagnostics experts about it and it's apparently nothing to worry about. Something about a "bootstrapping effect" of the alternator. It doesn't begin to make adequate voltage till you buzz the revs up just a touch. After that, a constant stream of sufficient volts and all is well. I lost my wife's 'is' spoiler last year in a rain storm (probably drove through one too many puddles). It was already badly beaten and fractured from previous parking curb encounters. That extra 1" of plastic is a trademarked perpendicular curb scraper. On the other hand, my 'i' spoiler is still original and is still solid. Here is another reason: 'i' spoiler is about $75. 'is' is around $150. I would stay away from the used ones. The first thing to go are the eyelets that snap into the fasteners. The fewer the remaining functional eyelets, the easier it is to loose the lip. Fasteners go for something surprisingly reasonable as $1-2/each at the dealer. Guaranteed to be in stock ;-) alex f ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jan 2000 09:44:31 -0600 From: "John F Stoj" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [uuc] Lost Postings Something strange is afoot at the Circle K. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jan 2000 10:56:22 EST From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [uuc] All Wheel Drive? Not necessary. As most of you probably know, the Northeast is buried under the heaviest snowfall of the winter. Here in NEPA, we've got a good 7" or more. Well, last night was wing night at a favorite watering hole about 7 miles from my house. I could have bummed a ride from a friend who has a Suburu Outback and was driving right by here on his way. Knowing that if I showed up without my Bimmer I'd never live it down, I lit off the 318iS and soldiered right up my driveway, which includes a rather steep uphill section. The round trip went without even a hint that I'd be stuck in snow. In fact, the worst part wasn't the snow itself, but people in $40,000 AWD trucks that insist on braking down to 10 mph before ascending hills. This is right when I'd like to have a little momentum. Still, it wasn't a problem. I even ran a few errands, one of which required a good 10 mile cruise on a snow covered Route 81. Ground clearance becomes an issue on this particular car, owing to the shorter Eibach springs. But it didn't hinder me last night. I heading out today, too. AWD? So not necessary for most people who have it. Has this alliance been announced yet? (I know that a specific new Castrol blend is the only approved oil for the E39 M5...) Castrol to oil BMW's way 22 Nov 1999 Oil manufacturer Castrol is expected to announce a deal with BMW shortly that will be a major blow to its main rival Mobil and could have far reaching consequences for its involvement not only in motor sport but its distribution to the worldwide automobile industry. The alliance with the Bavarian motor manufacturer will enable it to play a key role in the performance of the Williams Formula1 team whilst not being a major sponsor. Included in the agreement will be the supply of oil to all BMW cars leaving the factory and recommendation to all of its 5,500 dealerships world wide, for its use in servicing. Castrol is also expected to take over the manufacture of BMW's own branded oils. According to Castrol's chief executive, Mike Dearden, it could be beneficial for Williams to have an exclusive supply of oil tailor-made for their new power plant, which will be used for the first time in racing next year in Australia. "As engine designs become more complex, manufacturers need to move to these relationships," he said. He also added that the deal with BMW was not necessarily exclusive and that he was in talks with other auto manufacturers. Mobil is said to have a similar although less comprehensive alliance with Mercedes Benz. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jan 2000 11:17:48 -0500 From: "VIncentMathew Malfa" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: RE: [uuc] Lost Postings <<Something strange is afoot at the Circle K.>> Hey, there were no bimmers in that movie! j/k... - -matt ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jan 2000 10:22:04 -0600 From: "Fadeev, Alex" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] RE: Tires for E30 Chuck H <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> asks: > > Hello, all. The only semi-decent summer tire is 205/60/14 Yoke AVS-i. They also used to be available in 195/65/14 size, but not any more. In general, you will find a better selection of tires in the 205/60 size. Has this alliance been announced yet? Bill Matthews says probably with the formating all screwed up: The 11/21/99 presss release from http://www.burmah-castrol.com/pr25.htm Burmah Castrol plc, the international specialised lubricants and chemicals group, today announces that it has entered into a major partnership with BMW Group. The agreement comprises a long-term global partnership between BMW Group and Castrol, the world leading lubricants brand which this year celebrates its centenary. The partnership is one of the most significant technical, commercial and marketing agreements ever entered into by Castrol and covers six major elements: Castrol will become BMW Group's strategic lubricants partner working in the area of R&D and leading to the joint development of the next generation of lubrication products. These will be designed to offer enhanced performance and support BMW Group's new engine development and manufacturing processes. Castrol will become the recommended lubricant for BMW cars and motorcycles, Rover, Land Rover, Mini and MG. Most of these marques - which accounted for sales of approximately 1.2 million vehicles in 1998 - will be filled with Castrol as they leave the production line. Thereafter, BMW Group will recommend Castrol in service literature, driver handbooks, marketing communications, and prominently on vehicle engines. BMW Group will out-source its lubricants business to Castrol. As such, the BMW Group will recommend that Castrol products are used in their approximately 3,500 dealerships worldwide. In addition, Castrol will source and market BMW branded lubricants. Castrol Industrial will become BMW Group's partner in the provision of advanced industry products and services to all BMW Group production plants, leading to the joint development of advanced technical fluid management solutions. Castrol will collaborate with BMW Group and their dealers in supporting after sales service with the aim of enhancing service efficiency and improving customer benefits. Castrol has reconfirmed its commitment to Formula One by partnering the BMW WilliamsF1 Team and other BMW motorsports activities. Castrol will provide technical assistance on the race track and in test programmes, and will supply all lubricants products to the BMW WilliamsF1 team. In return, it will receive significant branding and marketing rights. BMW Group expects to derive significant business advantages from the agreement in the form of bringing R&D benefits to customers more quickly and increasing the efficiency of manufacturing through fluids management and the application of new production techniques. In return, Castrol will benefit from significantly increased sales volumes, as well as substantial brand promotion opportunities worldwide, supporting its existing 110 million annual marketing spend. Both BMW Group and Castrol will also benefit from the considerable technical and R&D opportunities that will arise from the partnership. Mike Dearden, executive director of Burmah Castrol and chief executive of Castrol, commented: "This is an association of two of the world's most powerful automotive brands. The BMW values of performance, quality, technology and exclusivity perfectly complement Castrol's image. Castrol's position as a world-class brand is assured as we enter the next century." "Our two organisations rely on very similar values of performance, quality, technology and innovation," said Dr Henrich Heitmann, member of the Board of BMW Group, Sales and Marketing. "Already Castrol and BMW work together around the world in many ways. This new collaboration can only further help to deliver mutual benefits to both our organisations. BMW needs technical partners of the highest quality. Castrol has the experience and technology to assist us to improve our vehicles, develop more efficient production techniques and work with our dealers to improve customer benefits." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jan 2000 10:56:40 -0600 From: "John F Stoj" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] BMW prices bloating?
