Don't recall this being mentioned, but one thing that gives E30s (don't
know about E28s) their handling traits is the semi-trailing arm rear
suspension, which is shared with the 318ti and Z3-series. Food for thought?

Ray,
I won't dispute what you say about weight and hp but I'm having a damn fun
time driving the S4 especially in this weather we have in NJ. :-)
On a dry race track there is no doubt the new M3 will probably kill an S4
but I bought my car for everyday driving and that means bad weather as well
as good. I also have to drive up a mountain to get to my house so there is
no way I'm even considering an E46 M3. I also doubt that the new M3 will
be under $55,000 once it's optioned. That's $16,000 more than the S4 and
$16k will buy a damn nice E30 M3 these days for the nice days and track days.
If you get a chance to drive the S4 I think you will be
impressed. Although BMW is still the Ultimate Driving Machine I think the
boys from Ingolstadt are getting closer.

When this happened to me it ended up being a sensor on one of the rear
seatbelts that went bad.

My BMW dealer replaced it under warranty.

Hi all,

My 325i airbag light came on while I was driving home
from work today. I was just driving normal speed and
didn't hit any pothole or hit anything. Any idea what
might have cause it? Is the car still safe to drive
until I bring it in to the dealer to check it out?
Does this happens often on the E36s?

Any help would be apperciated?

Joe,

What everyone is talking about is to NOT put the original straight cross bar
in the holes further back after putting the X-Brace in it's original
location (effectively having TWO cross bars)... This could amount to too
much support structure for the engine/tranny to break through on their way
to the ground during a severe impact and thus they would have no choice but
to come join you in the passenger compartment.

<snip>

On a related note, I read several times that the original straight cross bar
should NOT be moved back behind the x-brace as this may not allow for proper
engine/trans displacement in a frontal accident. While under the car, I
took a long look at this and I just didn't see that happening. The same bar
mounted in the original location is perfectly OK, but mounted 2 inches
rearward isn't??? I certainly could be wrong on this but..... Any
thoughts, opinions, condemnation, accusations, or rants on this one?

Wrong thing to do. I first memorize car, plate and driver before I get all

Hello, all. What I do NOT want to do is start a mile long string of responses to a
topic that has already been covered. So feel free to email me privately. I need new
tires for my 1992 325iC, very, very soon. Problem is, most of the good performance
tires are not available in my 14" wheel size. Anyone have any suggestions? I shall
keep the rims stock. Thanks very much.

Gary et al,

<<Don't get me wrong, the new ix does peak my interest, I just want to see
if it measures up dollar for dollar.>>

I agree and the fact that they are talking wagon 323 is fine for
me....that's exactly what the wife wants! I must say though I think they
should offer a coupe or sedan model with the 2.8 or 3.0 such that
"enthusiasts" such as ourselves might have a crack at it. My sister has
been looking at the Audi Avant quite a bit and she says although she likes
the car a lot it's very small inside.....of course she is looking for some
interior capacity, hence the wagon vs. sedan. For utilitarian purposes if
BMW can offer a good amount of interior space this will be one improvement.

As for pricing, the iX was not very "popular" mainly due to its pricing. I
have the original window sticker for my car. It was purchased in December
of 1988 with basically no options (iX's came fairly well equipped but
nothing special) and it stickered for almost $32k! That's quite a bit for a
car NOW but man that was 11+ years ago. Don't get me wrong...I think it's a
great car as some of you may realize from my posts but that's a lotta bucks,
and AWD is nothing too rare these days. BMW better be very careful on the
pricing.

<<Hmmm, wonder if the 3.2 will drop in with the AWD gear?>>

Maybe they learned something from the previous generation...a la no S14
fitment. ; )

The E36 convertibles only have the single X-brace, not both.

For those of you wringing your hands over the safety issues of using an
X-brace, here is the explanation from Eric Wensberg of BMW Motorsport: the
X-brace will still allow the engine to travel downward under the drivetrain
tunnel in a frontal collision so long as you have REMOVED the original
straight crossbar. DO NOT simply relocate the original crossbar to the
rearward bolt holes if you are installing the X-brace. The original
crossbar MUST be removed.

First thing to do is take a peak underneath and see if you can see any wet
spots on the underbody. Make sure the hoses into and out of your fuel
filter are tight and the tube from the filler tube to the tank are all okay.

When I first got my e30 the top filler tube had to be replaced on my car
because it was rusted. I was told it is rather rare for this to happen but
it might be worth checking.

More recently my e30 has rusted around the hose inlet where the rubber hose
attaches to the tank. Its not really bad but If I fill it up I can
defiantly smell gas. I asked my mechanic about it and he said it is common
on alot of the e30'e in the rust belt. If the corrosion isnt too bad drain
and remove the tank and have it sealed and recoated. If i the rust is bad
the tank will have to be replaced. Dont weld it!

At wide open throttle (WOT), it runs fine. This problemmanifests itself all
the way up to 4500 RPM. I did not try driving at engine speeds higher than
that due to the horrific road conditions in NJ tonight. Also, the car seems
to idle a little rougher than usual, but my car always idles like crap so
the rougher idle may not be related.

Just did started today? In NJ? With the snow/ice crap?

Let's start thinking of weather conditions. Car parked outside? In
garage?

>The problem can't be fuel or ignition related because the car runs fine
>at WOT. Which sensors does the ECU reference ap part throttle but ignore
>at WOT?

Wrong. Sensors control the fuel and ignition. If it isn't a physical
mechanical thing (like you dropped a valve) - it's either fuel or
ignition or air-intake or exhaust..

>Ed "Dirt Tracking in the Snow" Walters

Toppa the head sorta thing:

1. Check plugs. Wet? Too rich. White? Too lean. Look different from
each other - lotsa things.

2. Too rich? Plug wet? Fuel pressure regulator, bad plug(s), moisture in
the ignition cap, bad ignition rotor, bad coil, bad ignition wire
(either to plugs - or the one between coil and cap), bad Motronic,
bad main relay... and prolly a few other things that haven't popped
to mind. (plugged exhaust just popped up, and sticky cold-start
injector)..

3. Too lean? Fuel pressure regulator, ice in the fuel lines (use drygas),
plugged fuel filter, bad fuel pump. Sticky AFM (air-flow-meter), intake
or vacuum leak.

Either lean/rich conditions can also be caused by a bad temperature sensor,
there are several. The AFM is in/out of circuit at various RPM's, so
I'd prolly start by making sure the vane in it is moving correctly, and
the connections to it are clean and dry.. the engine will sorta run
with a wonky AFM - but could give the symptoms you've described.

Since it's a sudden thing - we'll discount general lack of maintanence
or valve adjustment.

The two magnetic engine sensors (located in your bellhousing) are
usually a go-no-go thing. If one craps out - you end up with a no
go situation.

If it was me - I'd replan my trip. Roads are still crappy anyway..
and find a good mechanic to take a looksee.

Best,
