Subject: [uuc] Re: Winter Driving (in BMWs) & Audi's

Having owned many BMWs over the years and living here in the snowbelt of
Northern NJ, I've had no choice but to make most of my BMWs snow-worthy.

The best cars I had in the snow were my E30's.. I purchased a pair of Pirelli
P-W10 (?) Winter Tires Sized 185/65 & (2) 14" Steel Wheels for my first E30,
a 1984 318i. I put a 2 Ton Jack in the trunk, along with a couple of bags of
sand, and there was pretty much no where that car didn't go. I was able to
salvage the tires for the '89 325iS, which was even better than the 318 (it
was heavier and had LSD). The '89 really kicked ass. I remember once after
a 10" snowfall here in NJ my friend and I went out (he had an AWD Eagle
Talon).. he figured I'd get stuck, but not once. We even attempted some
sizable hills, and I had no problem. Get this - I even stopped in the middle
of one and started again. Crazy. That really put my confidence in Winter
tires.

As many of you might have been aware of, I was desperately awaiting a major
snowstorm. Well, my prayers were answered yesterday, albeit suprisingly. My
girlfriend has a '98 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro Sport, and last night, I took it
out for a little fun. Theres no doubt that Quattro rules in the snow. I
have a '95 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 for Snow-Duty, but I seriously think the Audi
goes, stops and handles MUCH better in snowy conditions.

All those w/E30's and who have to drive them in the snow - my advice is to
get yourself a good set of snow's and some weight in the trunk (along with a
full tank of gas, the night before a big storm).

'99 323i/4 (That Doesn't see Snow)

P.S. - Does anyone remember the old Audi Quattro commercial (in the 80s) when
it was racing a Snow-Cat up a real Ski-Jump.. they got to the top alongside
the Snow-Cat and the announcer says "Ours has a better radio." That was cool.

Putting hot water on the car may cause more problems than it solves. First, I don't
think the ice by itself is a problem to the car's paint or finish, as long as you
don't do something silly like try to remove it with a ski pole (my brother the PhD
astrophysicist actually did this once, and then couldn't understand why there were
so many scratches on his car - duh! Thankfully, his car was "only" a Buick). The
hot water idea, on the other hand, MAY cause problems from thermal stresses - for
example, a body panel trying to expand under the higher temperature of the hot water
while the underlying chassis is still cold. Also, the hot water will land on your
driveway and cause a terrible ice patch that may last till spring.

Subject: RE: [uuc] Opinions needed: RD vs. H&R springs for E36

Perrin:

FWIW, I also own a '93 325is, and went with the H&R springs/Bilstein Sport shocks/RD
Sport Sway bars setup, which was recommended by Will Turner/Turner Motorsports.

In a nutshell, I've been extremely happy with the results. The ride is definitely
firmer, but my kidneys have not suffered, and the handling is unbelievable compared to
stock. The car points&shoots like never before, and is still fairly predictable at
the edge of traction, so it has yet to get away from me (knock on wood) beyond an
occasional quick flick of opposite lock on corner exits (this of course may also be
tire related... FYI, I'm running Dunlop SP8000's 225x50-16's).

As far as lowering, the net effect on my car was about 1.25" in front and 1" in back,
which hasn't turned the car into a curb-eater. Granted, I no longer have to deal with
snow, so I cant share any experiences there (side benefit of moving from Boston to
Austin, TX :-)

Let me know of I can share any more feedback and we can take this offline. YMMV,
IMHO, and all that... And one final piece of advice: If you haven't already done so,
I'd recommend having a chat with one of the friendly folks at Turner Motorsport, who
in my experience have been quite willing to share their expertise and opinions on this
and other tuning issues. (http://www.turnermotorsport.com)

Hope this helps,
Felipe.

Would anybody care to weigh in on the pros and cons of bypassing the coolant
lines that run through the throttle body. I've seen some discussion of this
technique as it applies to other makes (specifically Corvettes) in order to
increase HP (less heating of the incoming air resulting in a more dense
charge). I asked Jim C about this at the tech session at Curry's a few
months ago and he said something about ~ 7HP increases for my car ('95 M3),
but he was a little pressed for time so I couldn't grill him as much as I

I've heard of it.

I've also heard of using a hair dryer and then regular ice. It's the rapid
change in temperature taht causes the metal to change shape rapidly that
allows certain dings to pop out.

Unfortunately, it only works on specific types... like if someone "hip
slammed" the door, it should work. If you've got a bad point-type door ding,
then it may not work.

BMW paint is usually fairly thick so it shouldn't crack unless the initial
ding damaged it.

I would say that the hair dryer and ice cube way couldn't hurt anything. I
don't know about dry ice.

From: "Steve D'Gerolamo" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: [uuc] Audi Woes

Repost- The new S4 and TT are considered great cars here in the states.
To some of the German enthusiasts, the story is a little different:

10/99: There has been much discussion lately between the new Audi S4 and
the E36 M3 with many here (especially the car magazines) in the US favoring
the Audi these days. I spoke with Movit today (they sell many Audi brake
kits, including kits to tuner Christian Abt) and this car is having some
problems in Germany.

Problems include those with the engine management system & air intakes.
The dual intercoolers are a joke in his opinion as the A/C condenser blocks
flow to one and the fog light blocks air to the other. These cars suffer
from very high fuel consumption in a country with costly fuel. Lastly, the
turbos are apparently undersized and modifications are barely able to
generate 270-280hp...nowhere near the 300+ that many tuners are claiming.
Guido said he would take an M3 anyday over these Audi's.

The Audi TT is also having problems......poor aerodynamics. There is talk
of lawsuits with at least 5 deaths reported because of the tendency of the
car to lift in the rear at 200km/h speeds. Engineers have added 50kg to
the trunk which helps a bit but the designers are reluctant to add spoilers
since, in their opinion, this would detract from the car's aesthetics.
(1/00- I believe Audi has finally conceded and added a slight spoiler to
the TT) (6/99- SportAuto did a comparative test of stock vs Movit brakes on
an Audi 1.8TT. They did consecutive high speed stops with each setup, cold
and warm from 200km. With the stock brakes, the first stop from 200km/h
yielded rotors temps of 417C front & 278C rear.....the Movit brakes were
150C front & 97C rear. By the time they did the 5th stop from 200km/h, the
stock rotors were at 600+C both front and rear with flames coming front the
front hub assembly...testing was suspended. With the Movit brakes at the
10th consecutive 200km/h stop, rotor temps were only 356C front & 169C
rear. Now this really doesn't mean much here in the states as there's
little chance these cars will be driven at drivers schools where you'd be
doing this kind of high speed braking. It is significant in Germany.)

Now, before I get accused of bashing Audi, let me say that they make a fine
road car with excellent value. If we didn't have a dog, the SUV would be
traded in a heartbeat for an Audi quattro. These cars are far superior to
BMW in the kind of weather we've had here on the East coast today. Audi's
engineering is excellent for the most part but they tend to be a little too
cost conscious with many of their chassis/suspension/brake parts. I don't
think you'll find any BMW club racers abandoning their M3's to race an A4
(well maybe Don Salama...just kidding Don). I can also say the same for all
of the new Porsches...the last good Porsche in my opinion was the 993
series, especially the turbo. The differences in the 996 components are
obvious to the technicians and the fact that every 996 owner gets a letter
with the purchase of their car forbidding its use on the track indicates
(to me) a significant change in this company's philosophy. SD

Um... well, you can have a manual tranny if you *really really* want one...

> but until they throw a manual transmission into a US version
> of their cars (one that improves performance - unlike the one
> in the SLK) they'll all be geezer-mobiles to me

I'd honestly stick with the auto. I doubt there are any manual transmissions
that improve performance - M-B usually quotes slightly faster acceleration
times for its automatic cars. The increased efficiency of the manual gearbox
is negated by the slow change (ever driven a M-B manual? A base-model,
windy-up-window C180 required a brief work-out and stretching session for
me, although the high mileage might have had something to do with that).

Along with the revised E-class, M-B (OK, DaimlerChrysler) released a new
breed of diesels which use a new manual transmission, supposedly a huge
improvement on the earlier ones. So these may filter through to the petrol
cars. Don't hold yer breath though.
