(usually on the highway, at speed, shattering nicely on the pavement in front of the next guy) In general, if your car is driven in frozen weather, you should also park it in a frozen place - the extra moisture from melting snow & ice (especially if roads are salted) doesn't do the car any good in the long run, corrosion-wise. But in reality, lots of people in frozen climes will take their car to the car wash in frozen weather to wash the gunk off, get the snow boogers out of the wheel wells, etc. I've done it, and frozen locks or windows or doors have never been a significant problem. One thing you'll really want to avoid though is using a bucket of hot water to remove ice from the windows on a cold morning. You may get lucky, but then you may crack a window. It's up to you. Ah, the memories of ice storms... Ever have to pound on your door with gloved fists to crack the ice enough so that you can get in the car to fetch your ice scraper? And then you break the ice scraper? My worst problem this winter has been a leak in the window seal around my convertible top that lets water drip on my leg. :) - -- John Bolhuis | "In America it is not considered to be mentally ill bolhuijo | when a woman advances on her prey in a discotheque @bolhuijo.com | setting with hardy cocktails present." | -Madonna ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jan 2000 14:15:50 -0800 From: Ken Lam <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] E30 Dash light problem Aaron writes <<When you start the car, these lights are suppose to go out (except park brake obviously). In reality, there weren't a lot of people last weekend and chances are that there won't be for the forseeable future. If you can't get a slot, just go there and sign up as a walk-in. Impressive exhibition of superb car handling if I may say so. OK Ed, Don and Gary have pointed you to some good places. Especially the sticky air flow meter. The 2nd spot is the fuel pressure regulator like Don mentioned. After that you should check the Throttle Position Switch. At WOT everything is ignored (temp sensor, 02 sensor, air flow meter is checked though) and should run like the way you usually drive! ;-) If the TPS is screwed then so are you because it sends conflicting condition signals to the DME. If that isn't it disconnect your 02 sensor and see how it runs. My research indicates it is exactly like the Foliatec caliper paint at 60% less cost ($20 versus $50). Foliatec seems a little steep for what the kit includes (paint, brake cleaner, etc.). I figure this brake upgrade will add at least ten horsepower and allow me to stop 10% shorter than before. Seriously, I figure this would be a fun weekend project while I am waiting for my next upgrade to arrive (I am looking for any excuse to work on my car lately) and will make it easier to keep the calipers clean. I am not sure if I would go with the black, silver or red. Jim Powell's calipers look pretty snazzy in red although the calipers on my car are difficult to see behind the current stock flat ten double spokes. By the way, does anyone else like the looks of the stock flat ten double spokes aside from me? Thanks. A small engine almost always loses performance with an automatic. The trans takes power to generate hydraulic pressure needed to operate it. Also take off rpm is limited to the stall speed. Even without these performance limits, driving with an automatic is less than satisfying. That is because there is an area in the performance envelope that can't be accessed. As you call for more power by pressing the gas pedal, the transmission will downshift and suddenly give too much power. This, for me, is the most aggravating aspect of an automatic. Automatics are nice for cruising around town, but not for any real performance work. Gary Derian <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Andy T wrote: > I'd honestly stick with the auto. The guard rail went straight into the driver's side compartment...no one else was in the car. Luckily, the car behind me stopped and the driver cut me out of the seatbelt; I was able to pull myself out and wait until the police came. I was rushed to the hospital with a fractured pelvic ring and just got back today. I am a very lucky person. Anyway, none of my airbags (front or side) deployed, and I am a little pissed to say the least. I had taken the '98 E36 328 to get inspection I the week before, along with a request to fix the airbags since the airbag light had been on for the past few weeks. The service advisor said it was a problem with the passenger-side seat belt buckle sensor and that the airbags were operational. What can I do? Would a lawsuit hold up in court?
