Not to disagree with much of your opinion, but from the officers I know,
traffic stops are one of the scariest things a cop does. They have
absolutely no idea who they're dealing with or what modd they're in
or... Domestic disturbance? OK, probably some angry, violent, SOB
around, maybe armed. Burglery? Probably armed, dangerous suspect - use
caution, backups, etc. Pulled over a Civic for speeding? Um, who the
hell knows??? Could be drunk, could have drugs in the car, no license,
suspended license, desparate enough to flee or shoot... or maybe just
someone like Rob fuming about the ticket they're about to get. How do
you tell that he's ticked but not violent? He's in the car with all the
hiding spots and you're outside a standing target...

I still agree that the amount of speeding tickets vs. other much more
dangerous offences is appalling, but don't think that doing a traffic
stop is a trivial experience for the officer.

I saw seven adds in Autoweek from people speculating on M5's, as in "best
offer over MSRP." Why do I have this sudden urge to call them up several
times over the course of several weeks, drive the bid sky high, then say "An
M5? I'm sorry, there must be some sort of misunderstanding. I thought you
were auctioning off a date with Denise Richards. I would never pay that
much over list price for a car. Bye!"

Is it bad for me to wish that these people lose their shirts on these cars?

If speeding vs. public/individual safety REALLY was the primary issue for
most speeding tickets, why would the following have occurred ?

A family member is a police officer in a town up in NH. He was "ferrying" a
car down to another family member in Fla. He got stopped on the NJ Turnpike
for speeding, apparently showed the officer his shield and was let go with
the following admonition - " For pete's sake, keep it under 85 !"

How many of US would get off that easy?

Obligatory BMW content... My 97 M3 gets terrible traction (D8000's - rear 9000's
front) in the snow, but the ACS is AWESOME... while I do have to turn it off
occasionally to get up hills @ Slow speed... it is still increadble... Q.. is it
bad to floor it on ice w/ ACS on? Is it cutting the gas off so the wheels don't
spend or is it just braking.. ?

OK, the M3's at the dealer today for a pre-warantee inspection. They're
doing a bunch of stuff free under warrantee, but I just got a call
saying that my front brakes need rotors and pads and rears need pads.
This seems reasonable as I figured at least pads were in order. They
want $775 for the whole job.

Now, here's the question: I have been considering putting a big-brake
kit on the car for a while now. I am not, however, a track junkie - in
fact, I expect my first event will be this spring. I am trying to
decide whether to just have the dealer fix the stock brakes or take it
in for a Brembo kit. The difference is about $2500. Please keep in
mind that I have no place to do brake work myself, so I am willing to
pay the dealer's mark-up.

Thoughts please?

Celisa,
Technically the two inspection types are different ('I' is a
glorified oil change, 'II' actually involves changing disposable parts), but
both are overpriced. The dealer should have reset your oil light regardless.
Which dealership did you go to: Classic, Moriz or John R? All of
them are bordering on pathetic, but there are a few good mechanics at John R
if you can fight your way to them through the clueless tech writers.
Autobahn in Fort Worth is much much better, but they are a bit too far from
Dallas for regular maintenance.
I would look for an independent mechanic instead, now that you are
out of warranty. Having said that, it's easier said then done. I moved to TX
1 1/2 years ago and still am not 100% happy with local independents.
If you live in north Dallas, drop me a line and I will tell you
which independents to avoid in that area (hint: if you see Porsche's on the
lot => you will be charged through the nose ;).

good luck,

I can appreciate that troopers are real people, with families, friends and
loved ones and that, yes, they do deal with situations that most of us would
never want to be involved in. But after growing up and learning to drive in
Maryland - where the enforcement of speed laws is (or at least was) so
prominent that it was obvious what the troopers' number one task was -- your
view of state troopers quickly became one of contempt. I had my fair share
of getting pulled over for speeding in Maryland, and each and every time it
happened I was treated like a second-class citizen that had just committed a
heinous crime.

I've lived in Florida since '91, and have been pulled over 5 times for
speeding, all by troopers. The outcome of each? Two tickets and three
warnings. Each time the trooper was polite and, egad, even friendly. I have
found that the difference in the attitudes of the troopers in the two states
is just tremendous. So, my vote is that troopers in Maryland are there for
the revenue that tickets provide to the state, and those in Florida seem to
have a better understanding of the true priorities of police work.

Whatever your choice is, if you go with the big brake kit, the best option
in this category is the Mov'it kit from Steve D. Don't waste your money on
the Brembo kits with the cracking rotors, expensive replacement parts and
lower performance.

Personally though, I say get the brakes done by the dealer... next time,
plan ahead when you need brakes and get some of the cheep Brembo OEM rotors,
some high quality (Fischer) SS lines, Ate Blue and some good quality pads.

Subject: [uuc] Re: [E36M3] Brake advice please

John,
If I were you and I had to get my brakes fixed for $775, I would upgrade the
brakes.
Here are my reasons for doing this:

  1. You are doing your first driving school and I promise you will become
addicted.
This is the best drug that you can get that is still legal. After
this one you will
be wanting more and more. With the increase in desire and track
experience
you will go faster and the stock brakes will not work as efficiently
as a Big
        Brake Kit.

  2. They inspire a better felling about your car. When you are at the
track and hear
all this talk about warping rotors and running out of brakes, you
don't have to
worry about this like the other guys. You have the BIG BRAKES.

  3. They look cool if you are just driving on the street.

Now all these reasons are not the best data that you can collect on the
brake kits.
They are my opinion as why you should buy them. As for which set you should
buy, I think the Porsche Brakes are the best. They are proven to help stop
a Porsche
Twin Turbo from 120-0 in 5.0 seconds flat and from 80-0 in 3.7 seconds and
do this
10 times and not fade. Now that is a brake system to reckon with. As you
might now
the parts are only a Porsche dealer away and are fairly inexpensive. But
then again
I am biased in my opinion of them as I spent the $$$ to buy them for my
car. But
if you do get a set of brakes for the car you will not be disappointed.

Here's a question for the tech heads. I recently replaced a dead
resistor on the auxiliary cooling fan's low speed circuit. Two days
later, the new resistor is dead. No continuity (infinite resistance)
when measured at the resistor. Could the fan have killed the new
resistor? The fan still works at high speed and the rest of the circuit
is working properly.

John,

All you need are a parking lot, a jack, a few tools, a friend and
http://www.racepad.com/
Even if you're a shadetree newbie it'll only take you about 2 hrs to do the
whole job. It's really quite simple, teach you a lot about the braking
system on your car, and cost you less than $400. There are a number of
track junkies on these lists that go through the whole operation under less
than ideal garage conditions every time they hit the track. The money you
save will buy you a driving school or a bagful of tools, but more important
it'll lower the threshold to work on your car next time.... Save your
money for the Mov'it kit after you've completed 5 or 6 schools.......

Cheers,

Peter

But Greg, BMW is in the business of making road
cars. Cars for driving on the road. Its BMW's
marketing that gives us the perception that "M"
might mean its...ohhhh....a RACE car. Witness
PTG. Marketing. We all known M stands for
marketing after the passing of the E30 M3.
Not to say one type of M3 is any less nice
as any other type of M3, but M these days
stands for Marketing. (Before I get flamed,
I have an e36 M-wannabe)

I don't know if this is true b/c I have never driven
(not ridden) an e39 M5 to 155 and hit the brakes.
But BMW makes road cars. Who in the US
(You and I live in the States Greg) drives to
155 mph and then hits the brakes to get to 0 ?

>One of the cornerstones of BMW engineering has
>been the fact that, unlike other car companies, they

That's a "cornerstone" of BMW engineering?
Really? Add a 100 lb-ft of torque and hp
to an e36 and you will feel rear suspension
bushings flex under load. BTDT.

>I also understand your arguments about the

Well isn't that sufficient for road driving?

>However, one should NOT be able to toast a set of
brakes
>after 5 laps of ANY race track short of the
Nurburgring or
>Hockenheum, not on an M car
(www.bmwm5.com/race3.html).

Why? Its a road car. They didn't design it for the
track. The M-brand (its a brand now, remember?)
exists
to market the product as race-"inspired" design. Not
a
race design. Race "inspired." Shit, Nissan claimed
that their Pathfinder was "inspired" by the Paris-
Dakar Rally when it came out. Does that mean
the Pathfinder can drive the same route as the Rally?
No.

What's the problem? If you don't like it, then
replace
the brakes on the M5 with those Guido-brakes you like
so much.

Do we complain to Reynard that their products
don't work well on the street?
