I find the whole idea of "State Troopers" hiding behind billboards and being judge, jury, and executioner for activities we all do, or legitimate accidents, to be so repugnant that it's sickening. I believe in strong speed limit enforcement - AFTER they've rounded up all the murderers, rapists, kidnappers, crooked politicians, drunk drivers, thieves, and people who spit in public, then they will have plenty of time for that. Call me silly, but all of those things seem a little more important than 99% of the traffic stops I see. </soapbox> I couldn't agree more! Over here in NYC, they have "traffic cops" cruising the side streets looking for terrible stuff like inspection & registration stickers that are a day overdue (ticketed me the day BEFORE it was expired), and cars with no front plate. You can't park for one day without getting scoped by the cops. Like you said, when they get all the murderers, crooked politicians...maybe then it would be valid to go after dangerous parkers, etc! The other 50% is the officer/trooper's fault for enforcing laws that 1) unjustly and 2) that would never apply to him and 3) are absurd. Addditionally, they typically have sufficient income to gladly invest in the dealer's service department, to maintain their mechanical well-being peace of mind. This is a good thing, as it insures keeping a thoroughbred automobile "whole" (and preventing too many "fright pigs" from being offered on the used car market). These recommended services can be performed by anyone truly having an interest in things automotive, or by their mechanic, on a self-determined schedule. Let's face it... Most of these maintenance procedures fall into the realm of "common sense", mechanically speaking. I don't see a problem with someone skipping the factory-specified "inspections", as long as the necessary preventative maintenance proceedures are completed in a prudent and timely manner. The "dealer stamps" in the logbook, however, do add a certain "aura" to a vehicle when it comes time to sell it. Is it worth the extra $$$??? The choice is yours. You are dead on in describing the fact that BMW is building a road car here, but the fact of the matter is, any "road car" with an M Badge is supposed to have engineering which is directly descended from track experience. This might now count for much for those of us who A) Don't take our cars to the track, and B) Live in places like Oz or the US with low speed limits. Here is the thing- Drive an M5 to the limit of it's engine power (even with the speed limiter in place) and you are going 155mph (250kmh). Throw the puppy's anchor out, and I promise you that before you hit 40mhp, your brakes are toasted, after ONE stop. It is totally unacceptable when a car's engine can propel the vehicle to places where the brakes cannot safely bring it back from. One of the cornerstones of BMW engineering has been the fact that, unlike other car companies, they usually design suspensions and brakes for a car with a hundred more horsepower, I guess they forgot about this with the M5. I also understand your arguments about the physics involved, but I disagree. Brake performance on the M5, from a pure "Distance to Stop" measurement is perfectly acceptable, as a matter of fact, I think it beats the competition (E55 and that Jag). However, one should NOT be able to toast a set of brakes after 5 laps of ANY race track short of the Nurburgring or Hockenheum, not on an M car (www.bmwm5.com/race3.html). The problem is put into even more focus when you realize the scary sales numbers of Porsche brakes by Mov'it of Germany. Yes, Guido sells a good product which I personally love, but the sales for M5 kits are through the roof, why? Because the kit is not an upgrade for the M5, it is a major BUG FIX! M5s with the Mov'it kit do not have fade problems, the brakes are not cooked after one major stop, performance with the kit is on par with what it should have been in the first place. (www.bmwm5.com/race5.html). Why did BMW not fit 4 piston calipers to the M5??? Why did BMW not provide better brake cooling??? Why did BMW not, at least, install better performance brake pads and rotors??? Why does the M5 RingTaxi at the Nurburgring have sponsorship from Ate, and is fitted with Ate's PowerDiscs, racing blue brake fluid and racing pads??? Isn't the Ring Taxi supposed to be a vivid display of how BMW manufacturers cars for the road which are so superior in performance, that they can be the fastest taxi on the toughest road in the world, stock? Why did BMW M engineers drive a preproduction M5 to Guido's Mov'it shop in Aachern Germany MONTHS before the M5 was released, to have a brake kit installed??? The fact of the matter is, BMW, for some reason, short changed the M5's brakes. They KNEW of the limitations, and they built it anyway. The same sort of attitude has been adopted by Porsche; rumor is, the 996 comes with a piece of paper that says "Don't even bloody THINK of taking this car to a driving school or a racing track and expect the warranty to work when you come back." Greg > I doubt I have the same sources as Steve D'G.
