Chris,
You're obviously new at this <g> .... '83 528e's came stock with 14" wheels, which
LOOK like the TRX wheels styling wise, but they are not... Bend down and check the
tire size of those on the car. And no, 14" tires will NOT fit on 15.3"/390mm TRX
rims, if by some chance that actually is what is on your car. Good luck... Price
sounds OK.

If you are just going to be doing Auto-X and drivers schools might I suggest
not going all out and getting the latest greatest in lightweight helmets. I
have a Bell sport II and love it. would I love a new carbon fiber helmet?
Hell yeah, but IM using the helmet for 5-30 minutes at a time. Buy a decent
snell 95 style helmet and put any extra money into racing tires!

Chris in Vancouver gets his 5er..

Great. Sunroof may be a simple fix.. perhaps just the motor (I'd
look for used).. or mebbe the switch..

>Sure it's not the best 5-er, but I couldn't wait any longer. I still

Doubtful if you have TRX's - only the upscale 535 and 635 (and
meebe 735?)'s were inflicted with these. Know some people who
used 528e rims on their 535i' to get rid of the TRX's... check
the size, if it doesn't say '390' on them somewhere (like 220x60x390)
you have real size tires/rims. A nice size might be 200/70/14's..
I don't think there would be ANY problem with rubbing (I ran
220/60/15's on my E28/535i)

Best - and lots of luck with the 5er. Lots of expertise here
you can tap into!

BMW sure does make robust engines. Why do I say this? Because this past week
I helped my father replace the head gasket (it was leaking oil) in my mom's
'89 525i with 131K miles. Would you believe that the cylinders still had the
factory cross-hatch pattern in them?! There was no ridge or carbon build-up
whatsoever. The piston tops were so clean that the factory stampings in them
were clearly visible.

Furthermore, the valves had zero, zilch, nada deposits on them. Likewise
with the combustion chamber in the head. We were both amazed.

As far as maintenance goes, this car gets an oil change whenever the service
lights indicate (about 8-10K mile intervals), and a bottle of BMW gas
additive every few months. I'm still amazed.......

Rory:

Thanks for the lead. The digest has been great during my search. I found
this week a complete Gray interior for $1500 including air conditioner
control, truck tools and parts with no shipping costs. Still need front
bumper and all plugs to connect bact air cond. control, radio and god knows
what else they cut when taking that part of the dash apart. I would be so
easy to just pull the plugs out, but they cut everything. To everyone who
responded, "A BIG THANKS"

Subject: [uuc] TRX tires (was: I waited and I bought)

To those who suggested I make sure the wheels/tires were NOT the
metric ones (TRX), I did my homework prior to buying the car. The
tires actually say on the sidewalls "Michelin TRX" and the tire size
does end "...390". This was one of the reasons I could bargin the
price of the car down to $3000. Anyhoo, I just came back from my
mechanic. For CDN$1400, I'm having 15" alloys and Continental 205's
put on, all sterring bushings replaced and all four brake rotors
replaced. I think I got a pretty awsome deal!

BTW, the plugs and oil (synthetic) were just changed last week by the
last owner. And I'm getting the timing belt replaced and head gaskets
replaced just in case.

Pretty amazing. I sold my 320is to a good owner for $5250 and I'm
able to step up to a 5-er for the same price (all work included).
With the leftover $$$, I'll get it detailed...

Speaking of great engines, a couple of years ago a gentleman traded in his
84 533 on a 95 740i at the dealership I work at. At the time of trade in the
car had 414,000 miles!!! It has the original engine, trans, body, paint,
ect... Out of curiosity and a small leak from the head gasket we pulled the
head and found the crosshatch in almost perfect shape! we put a fresh cam
and rockers, changed the fluids and put it back on the road. Now thats a
testiment to the quality of BMW.

You know, everyday, I see cops on the road...these poor souls have
been *forced* to sell their bodies into the illegal forced cop-slavery
ring! They didn't have a chance! Sold into being a cop for the
rest of their life when they were 2 years old, they have no choice
but to comtinue risking life and limb every day!

I'm gonna count my blessing that my parents never sold me into
cop-slavery. I mean, I can expect a raise without getting *shot*

You're right Ted. Those poor cops, they have no other choice in life.
They never had the opportunity to be doctors or mechanics or lawyers
or IT professionals or CEOs or what have you.
Its too bad that they were forced into a profession that the general
citizenry confers disdain on. I guess I really feel sorry for them.
I take it all back! Those poor slaves *Deserve* get-out-of-jail
cards for being slaves. I mean, its not like they actually get *paid*
to do what they do, huh?

this certainly happens all the time in the snow.. but if there is
snow/ice stuck in back of the wheel there is not a lot you can do
about it until it clears itself (unless you want to remove the wheel..
not very likely when it is cold outside!)

this sort of thing also happens when you get a build up of mud in the
wheels as well :)

A couple of things I've noticed in the winter;

if you take your car out to a snow filled parking lot to play around
(practice those oh-so-cool rally 4 wheel drifts and also 180 and 360
degree spins) make sure your brakes work well before heading back onto
the main streets

once those disc brakes get packed with snow and ice they don't stop
worth
a damn! there is enough force to lock em up in the snow, but once you
hit
pavement they don't do anything. I've had to drive a few blocks with
the brakes pushed full force to heat 'em up and melt off the ice..

Also, I have a K&N cone filter in my '89 325i and find that when the
temperature gets down around -30C (~ -25F ), I sometimes get icing in
the air flow meter..

as in *ice* forms inside the air flow meter and jams the flap!
makes the car sure run bad.. stalling, running rich.. just a mess

luckily it's almost up to the freezing point this weekend so I have
a chance to put the stock air box back in for the rest of the winter..

yes,,,there are unless really neglected/abused..

i have found that most quality euro cars and bikes hold up well to their

its not unusual to see x hatches at the 150k mile marks, as you
mentioned, not only on bmw , but other marquees as well

of all the cars i work on i love the bmw first[simply brilliant, they
are}, then benz, the eccentric jags, porsche, alfa's and any vinatge
euro car/bikes

all have their quirks...and are great to drive, imho, i love bmw, the
best

i have a customer with a 77 450sl[orgional owner] with over a million

maintaince schedule to the "T'...it has had a few water pumps,

know anyone with a good one for sale????????????????/
