You can only use TRX tires on the TRX rims (which measure about
15.3"). You *can* use 195/70-14 tires but obviously only if you get
14" wheels.

A better choice is to step up to 15" wheels (commonly available fromt
he later E34 5-series) with 215/60-15 tires or even 16" with
225/50-16.

Congratulations on your purchase, enjoy!

I got a Bell and like it. Some driver schools let you use M rated
ones, others require SA. Most (I think) are still allowing Snell '90,
but some may require '95.

One thing I would advise is to go somewhere where you can try it on;
fit is important and getting them mail order may not be a very good
fit, and you have no way of knowing until you get it.

You'd be hard pressed to find someone who can beat Joe Chavez'
prices. I've tried :-) I've used him extensively throughout my
E30 refurbishment project and he consistently beats the catalog
suppliers' prices on virtually all OEM parts. His price on a tie-rod
for my 89 325is is $38., BMP's is $46. BMP's price on a control
arm for an E36 (i assume yours is an E36) is $169 so that gives
you an idea of how low Joe goes for BMW CCA members :-)
There are other BMW dealers peppered around the country
that also give 25% discounts to members, but most only
give 10% to 15% off. They don't get my business though :-)

Is Nick Alexander on the net? I usually call him or just drive
over there and get my parts in person. Excellent service.

>also, do I have to get control arm bushing with it. Or any other bushing
that I would also need?

Yeah you'll need to replace your control arm bushing as the old one
won't come off your old arm without getting messed up. That's the
only bushing, but make sure you get new balljoint nuts and also
a new tierod nut.

You really should replace the other side while you're at it if it's any
kind of old. Better to do the front as a set so everything is exactly
the same both sides. I would never do one side unless the other
side is pretty recent, especially since you're autocrossing and
tracking your car. It's cheap insurance too :-)

>>So basically you're calling Rob a liar here.

Don't put words in my mouth. I didn't call anyone a liar. The point of what
I was saying was that Rob assumed the cop was doing 130mph. Without a radar
gun in his lap, he'd be pretty hard pressed to make that accurate of an
assumption. And as far as officer traveling past at 90 (like I had assumed),
maybe up ahead in traffic, there was a maniac, cutting people off and driving
erratically, at a high speed. Maybe the officer's goal was to catch him, but
obviously, while he was in the act (there's the witness part of all of your
comments).

>>So basically you're calling Rob a liar again here.

Again, putting words in my mouth. I say it was a sketchy circumstance, and
maybe there was more to it than Rob understood. Maybe 2 seconds prior to
that, a patrol car had been in an accident, and the officer had just gotten
off the radio and didn't have time to flip on his lights. It just sounds
sketchy, IMHO. Or maybe his wife was in a car accident with his 3 month old
daughter.

And what is it that you do, Jason? Do you put your life on the line every
day you go to work? Do you put on a bulletproof vest before you leave in the
hopes that you'll come home from work the same way you left for it? Didn't
think so. But, do you expect a raise from your boss every now and again?
Thought so.

An officer that's hiding in the woods probably isn't looking to slow traffic
down. He's looking for that speeder, the one who's traveling at a much
higher speed than the rest of traffic, the one's driving recklessly, and, if
uncaught, can cause a major accident. If he wants to slow traffic, he pulls
out and drives at traffic speed. Your comments are such a good reflection of
today's society. People want everything done for them, but don't expect to
pay any penalty for breaking the law.

Sometimes, the purpose of hiding is to get an accurate representation of the
actual traffic flow. And serve citations to those who are traveling above
the normal flow. You're an adult, you're responsible for your actions. You
want a reminder to slow down? How about those speed limit signs? An
officer's duty is to find those who are breaking the law and serve them
citations for doing so. Does a vice squad of a local police department show
up in their uniforms when it's time to make a drug bust?

Here's an idea - let's fire all the state troopers and local police and put
up those radar "speed" signs (you know, the ones that tell you your speed, so
that all of us honest citizens will see that we are breaking the law and slow
down.) That'll make the highways a safer place.

>>I see. The rules apply to us but not to them. How about murder? Is
>>that a perk too?

If you put your life on the line day in and day out, I'd say that's it's a
small perk to get out of moving violations. It may not be 100% fair, but you
know what? Life's not 100% fair, and if you haven't realized that by now,
you need a wake up a call. Theres not a damn thing any of us can do about
it. So rant all you want.

I have a Bell SR-Pro (cheap ~$200) and it was a mistake for me. I wear eye
glasses and they don't fit well inside the eye port, too narrow. Mistake
#2 the visor/shield thing, even though it might be one of those one in a
million chances, I already took a rock to the face at a driving school,
thru the open window, thru the eye port and in between my glasses and my
face, ouch. I haven't attended that many schools either. If I were to buy
another helmet, I'd buy Kevlar, full face, retractable visor/shield, with
large eye port. HTH

For what it's worth, passenger's in my car have mentioned that I should
consider having a helmet available if someone really wanted one. There's a
fine line between driving at the extreme of "aggressive" and abusing your
car. Alot of it depends on personal opinion. My car's not abused...it just
likes it rough. Heh heh

While I have enjoyed the speeding ticket rant, I live in Chicago and
over the years have come to appreciate the "thin blue line", whatever
they're enforcing. Drunks, hit and runners, and real criminals are also
known to disregard laws. That's what we're doing when we, as I call
it "push the envelope". So to paraphrase, "If you can't stand the fine,
don't do the crime".
And when ticketed for speeding I simply go to a speedometer shop and
have my speedometer "adjusted" for $30, take the receipt to traffic
court and the case is dismissed or reduced to a non moving offense like
unsafe of faulty equipment. Has worked every time with every judge I've
come up against in several different states.

Hey,

I seem to remember somebody was looking for an M3 interior as their's was stripped and
insurrance would not cover it?? Anyway, in case that person is reading, here is a
possible lead.

From: http://www.bimmer.org/m3/messages/messages/62022.html

I have a complete interior (and when I say complete, it means if it was in the
interior compartment of the car, it's not there any
more)for sale. Removed from a 99 M3 Coupe and is black. $5500. Would prefer not to
split it up. Includes Harmon Kardon
permium sound system (10 speakers, six CD player, etc.)

Contact Michael at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Good luck and hope it helps. Thanks for the BW.

Never thought I'd be able to give back to Ellie MacDougall, yeah that one
whose name was in the Roundel so many years.

I bought a helmet for my first driving school last year. I like it a
bunch, including its cool name: Bell M3. Full face, Snell SA95 rated,
Kevlar shell, lighter than fiberglas. $388 from Bell Motorsports in
Oakland, CA from their website at:

 http://www.bellmotorsports.com/index.shtml

No affiliation, just a satisfied customer (also bought driving shoes,
gloves, collar, helmet bag, Skip Barber "Going Faster" book from these
guys). Our local CCA chapter (Sin City) recently purchased "loaner"
helmets from the same company.

Subject: [uuc] Ultimate Driving Experience at Meadowlands..

At the CRACK of dawn this AM, I awoke to take my son up to the
Student Driving Course at the UDE being held in NJ..

He gave it a big thumbs up... he'd taking the Driving Dynamics
course about 5 months ago - which is an all-day course, done in
your own car... he felt he learned more in the DD course (which
costs about $350), but the BMW course was more fun..

Why? Well, he got to drive a new 328i instead of an '86 Volvo
wagon.. plus the BMW course was a bit more 'extreme' - ie,
floor it as you hit the skidpad, floor it for the ABS braking
exercises, floor it for the sudden lane-change exercise.

I got to drive the X5 for a bit - fun, but BOY it's big!

If you get a chance to get to a UDE - do so.. great way to
spend a morning even IF you have to get up at the crack of
dawn!

Eric,

Make sure you are looking at the correct chip. In my ECU there were
two, one that is soldered in place and another that is covered with a
plastic clip. The one covered with the plastic clip is the you want to
replace, and it should not be soldered in place. I think Duane, told
us a story once about somebody replacing the wrong chip. Don't make
that mistake.

Very very nice silver M5 in the showroom area of the reception tent.

No one seemed to mind if we sat in it and got to play with the shifter
(seems easier than the M-Coupe, but longer throw, but the wider spacing
between positions is gonna mean less blown engines due to a 5-2 downshift).

Interior seems a bit plush and busy for a performance car (guess I've
gotten used to the somewhat spartan interior/accessories of the coupe..)
driving it at speed and playing with the radio or GPS would be exciting.

No drool on the seats - but we sat in it early in the day..

BTW - if you check the GPS display at the UDE, and use it to get home..
when you park in my driveway, please try to avoid slipping on the ice
(was fun watching everyone use it to track the route from the
Meadowlands to my driveway.. apparently no one else figured out how
to program it :-)

BTW-II, my son wants a 750iL in blue. If anyone is bored with theirs
and wants to GIVE it to a deserving 17 year old.. lemme know, he feels
it would be an upgrade from his '86 Volvo wagon..

Best (snow sucks),
