Eric Rayl was kind enough to forward the following message concerning
getting the blasted AC belt on E28's:

Alex,

You can post this back to the llist if you wish, I can't post to the list
from here at work.

Yes, the stock part # belt is seemingly too short to install, but it can be
done and here's how: First, put the belt on the back (engine side) of the
crank pulley, behind the pulley, then put the belt onto the compressor
pulley, then work it forward onto the crank pulley. It will work with a
little muscle and prying.

Trying to put it on from the front is a no-go.

More than a decade ago, when we lived in southern Connecticut, I
came upon a woman in a broken down car in the middle of the eight
lane wide Quinnipiac Bridge that crosses the Connecticut River
east of New Haven. She was trapped in rush hour traffic, unable
to get out of the car to get help. I got off in New Haven and,
half a block from the exit, stopped at an Italian bakery and
asked to use their phone. I explained why. As soon as I said the
word "police", the kindly little woman took the phone she was
getting from under the counter and put it back, refusing to let
me use it. She was clearly American born, and also one of the
bakery's owners, so it was no INS issue. It wasn't until I
explained I was calling the State Police to get a wrecker for
this woman, and not calling the New Haven police, that she gave
me the phone. Kinda tells you something, doesn't it?

Alex and John - common problem. Seems the stock belt IS spec'd too
small. Get next size larger - will go on like it's supposed to.

I think Steve D' knows about this and sends the correct size..

That would be http://www.mitocorp.com/nvsmirro.htm (posted originally by Pat
Donahue). I finally ordered one which UPS tried to deliver Friday while I
was out but wouldn't because I wasn't there to sign for it (I'm certain I
filled out paperwork at their headquarters to automatically leave anything
that required my signature...appears to have been a waste of my time) and
I'll put it in when weather permits all the crawling around in my truck (the
tow beast in this case). I'll post my results whether y'all want them or
not.

This could not be truer in the Real estate, Housing market.

We were in the market for a house last year, and with the
booming economy and all, house prices were ridiculous this
side of New York City.. When we tried to verify if a house
was worth the asking price, our attorney repeated your Mom's
words.

FWIW: houses were going for nearly twice what they sold for
    two-three years ago.

Sensor for the temp gauge. Not related to the idle or fuel delivery.

Hey all,

I own an '86 528e, a great car in excelent condition. However the other
day I was driving down the freeway when the drivers side sun visor decided to
die on me. It no longer has the friction required to keep any position other
than the one gravitiy gravity dictates, which is hanging straight down. I
don't know how you all feel about driving with the sunvisor in your face when
you don't need it, but it annoyes the crap out of me. For the moment, I've
got it stuck in it's un-used position using some self adhesive velcro pads.
But I'd like to be able to fix it to it's proper working order. Anyone delt
with this problem before? Any serious thougths would be appreiciated. THanks
in advance!

I, too, have been watching with interest as M1 prices fall and have had a

been told, though, that even as exotics go, replacement parts--even simple

NLA, period. Is this correct Phil (or anybody else in a position to know)?

I meant I bought the BMW to *avoid* the tatoo craowd, the drug crowd,
the profanity crowd, the anti-establishment ( I think I'm
anti-establishment at BMW ) crowd and the loser, can't keep a job crowd.

I just wanted a nice commuter bike without the 'lifestyle' equations.

I've driven lots of air cooled BMWs, just to take a ride on friends
bikes. I'll be frank, I never owned a bike that weighed more than 250
lbs until I bought the pig (1978 Honda). I used to race flat track and
moto-x. I don't like heavy bikes and to me the BMW was the Cadillac of
motorcycles. They had their purposes and none of them were for me.

Thats not to say I don't like them. I just don't do that type of
riding.

What is a typical peak torque value, and at
what rpm's, for a modern F1 engine? I've
heard estimates for peak horsepower of 850
at 14,000 rpm. Sound about right? That would
correspond to about 320 ft-lbs or 430 NM, but
that's at 14,000rpm, perhaps it makes a bit more
at lower rpm?

Considering the E28's all have the same or similar visors (the front part of
the headliner is hard black vinyl), I would just get one from a yard. Try
Bimmerworld or other such place. Perhaps someone has one laying around. I
have a totalled 87 535is in a yard somewhere and the visors may still be
there. I won't have time to go there for a while though. Let me know if no
yards have one and I will try and get one for you.

A friend of mine is having a brake problem and I really didn't have the
answer. The steering wheel vibrates when the brakes are applied at about 70
mph but it is not noticed at lower speeds. Also no pulsation was noticed
through the brake pedal. If you have any input as to what it might be please

If you're getting a pulsation, most likely, the car needs new rotors

I bet at least half of you think I'm a pompous ass. Sometimes :)

But nobody likes a joke at my expense more than me. Some of you know
the famous '12 dozen condoms from UPS' situation that I endured with my
neighbors. And there are dozens more. I could have Candid Camera here
almost everyday, I'm such a goober.

What's the latest?

I had jury duty today and didn't get picked so I came home. I'm getting
ready to take the new bike for a ride and put my full face helmet on in
the garage. Then I forget I left the registration papers upstairs. So
I run up the stairs with the helmet on. Papers are sitting at the desk
with the computer. Kids walk in for lunch and catch me at the desk
(with UUC email on screen) wearing the helmet in the middle of the day.

12 y/o daughter gives me 'the look'.

"Dad, you need help about this car thing".

Another story added to the legend. Gotta go, clouds are clearing.
