Large and accurate logs would have to be kept. The easiest way would be for
the cars to transmit their VIN to the road when they pass over every sensor,
then a map could be generated showing the movement of the car from point a
to point b and what speed was travelled over each segment.

>> You're also assuming that the generate public is smart and can process

People are smart enough to look at a speed limit sign.. that's the only new
piece of info drivers have to pay more attention to.

Of course ;) Although that made me think of something even better. IN-CAR
speed limit displays. Perhaps a heads up display, or another insrument in
the cluster. Signs would never be obscured by snow nastiness or
tractor-trailers blocking their view. The car could even record speed
limit/actual speed data that could be used as evidence and crash data to
help an investigation. Sorta like a black box, it may only keep a record of
the past hour or so of travel.

Great idea.. reponsibility comes only with adequate training..

Why, thank you Rob! :) I'll give you US Senator plates so you're
traffically immune... hehe..

Definitely not! (evil big brother..) There are certain situations where
speeding is not only desirable, but necessary for the safety of all the
people around you. Could you imagine not being able to pass on a 2-lane
highway because you could only go 5mph more than the person you want to
pass, then hitting the oncoming car head on!

Most people who drive on country roads know them pretty well, and therefore
know what sections are rough or have some other thing that makes them
dangerous at speed, so they slow down.

This was the opposite in Montana, which is why "reasonable and prudent" went
away. (correct me if I'm wrong here..) But of course there were lots of
dumb people who visited there just to speed, and didn't figure out they
didn't know how to drive until it was too late.

I hope this wasn't too long... I thought I'd reply all at once instead of
creating a million messages.

You probably have some wax or other junk plugging the nozzle.

Two ways to fix this:

1) try cleaning out with very fine wire, like from inside a wire tie
(food bags) or a strand of speaker wire.

2) next time you run out of washer fluid, put in a *small* amount (6
oz.) of Windex. Real Windex, not a weak store-brand. Windex will
dissolve the wax in your nozzle, but will also remove wax from your
car.

I don't know if the M5 is different from a regular E28 but this trick worked
for me.
Get the belt on as much as you can and have someone give the key a quick turn
to activate the starter briefly. If you have it on in the right direction it
will engage fully.

After recent cold snap (-5F) the display on my OBC now has a number of pixels
illuminated that shouldn't be. Many, but not all clear after car interior
gets warm, but all return when interior temp gets cold again (overnight,
etc.). Anyone ever tried to repair this? Hints?

The "law" when applied to automobiles isn't about lessons or corrections.
It's about revenue.

I find the whole idea of "State Troopers" hiding behind billboards and
being
judge, jury, and executioner for activities we all do, or legitimate
accidents, to be so repugnant that it's sickening.

I believe in strong speed limit enforcement - AFTER they've rounded up all
the
murderers, rapists, kidnappers, crooked politicians, drunk drivers,
thieves,
and people who spit in public, then they will have plenty of time for that.
Call me silly, but all of those things seem a little more important than
99%
of the traffic stops I see.

</soapbox>
I couldn't agree more! Over here in NYC, they have "traffic cops"
cruising the side streets looking for terrible stuff like inspection &
registration stickers that are a day overdue (ticketed me the day BEFORE it
was expired), and cars with no front plate. You can't park for one day
without getting scoped by the cops.
Like you said, when they get all the murderers, crooked
politicians...maybe then it would be valid to go after dangerous parkers,
and speeders!
I'm sure there are cops somewhere who look for the most dangerous
looking driver/person out there, and then go after them. But somehow, we
know more cops who invariably pick on the easiest targets, the "safe"
speeder, who is just expressing his constitutional rights of speech and
protest, but is then harassed with excessive surveillance and penalties
which don't reflect the severity of the "crime". Maybe these cops should
put some REAL effort into the "job"? Murf

On a 1990 325is, does anyone know what sensor is mounted next to the coolant
temp. sensor on the thermostat housing? It has a brown connector and has only
one terminal. I don't think it is a thermo time switch or a coolant temp switch
because I don't think they were used on the M20 engine. I'm trying to
troubleshoot some idle problems and I thought it might be at fault. Thanks for
the help!

I've been riding BMW bikes since I was in high school and don't have a
tatoo, either. I doubt it's your BMW dealer that is questioning your
unmolested epidermis. Here in Virginia I'd take my kids to any of the
dealers, but, like you, I happen to like the BMW guys the best. Of the two
closest, one is a BMW car dealer, the other is a second generation owned
BMW bike-only shop, owned by a BMW car-driving/ex-CCA member.

Did you ever try an air-cooled boxer like the R80 or R100GS?

Morrie -

I assume by the comment "my men" and the sig with CFD (C? Fire Department)
that you are a firefighter?

Where did you hear/read/see that Halon is a carcinogen? The reason
I was told for having the switch outside the computer room was
because halon displaces the oxygen in the room, making it
hard/difficult/impossible for any occupants to breathe - leading
to asphixiation.

The reason the EPA banned was it is a halogen gas - like R12 -
and is accused of depleting the ozone layer. Some halogens (like
R12 and R22) do break down into toxic gases in the presence of
flame - but I'd never heard this with Halon.

Where did you hear it was a carcinogen?? Just checked my Hazardous
Chemicals Handbook (1999 edition) - not listed. My Handbook of
Hazardous Materials (a different but simular book) is at home, I'll
try to remember to check it tonight.
