It was legal when I got my first motorcycle license...back in 1977.

Subject: RE>[uuc] Alpine CD changer interface adapters FS...may be WOB

I know that there is an adapter that allows an Alpine CD changer to be used
with an E39 vehicle. I saw a fellow who had one. His changer said
"Alpine", looks line the one labeled BMW, and mounts the same as the factory
BMW unit in the E39. The adapter was a small black rectangular box about 3"
long, 1.5" wide and perhaps 0.5" thick. Unfortunately, I was unable to get
a good enough look to determine part number or other identifying
nomenclature - but it DOES exist.

Can anyone recommend a place that tints windows in the Chicago area?

My rear driver's side window was shattered and now the replacement window is
clear, while the others are not. I've thought about removal, but for the
moment because the "shatterer" of the window is paying for the tinting too, I
want to even out the windows' appearance.

Subject: FOR SALE: Immaculate 83 533i 5 speed-- $4500

It's time for me to sell my "back-up" car. I bought this car 3 years ago
and it has been bullet-proof reliable. Miles are about 159K (you would
think it was half that or less to look at it or drive it)

I have recently replaced the following:
1) All the chrome trim around the front and rear glass (turns brown with
time)
2) All the wheel badging, the hood and trunk badging,
3) New A/C compressor (3 years ago)
4) 5 new Michelins (5,000 miles ago)

This car is all original White paint (never wrecked) in amazing condition
with virtually no door dings, (some light scratches on surface of paint)
and an immaculate Dark navy interior (no dash cracks or upholstery rips,
excellent carpet)

----A very impressive example of an early 5 with power sun roof, windows,
locks, mirrors and On Board Computer. It is immaculate inside and out with
ice cold A/C . As is common on all these cars, it uses a bit of oil between
changes z9valve stem seals) but there is no smoke evident at all.

This is a great daily driver or pump up the tires and go Autocross on the
cheap!!

Email pictures are available on request. (This takes a bit of time to
do, so interested parties only please)

When last "caravaning" down I-5 in CA from San Francisco to LA in a '97 Ply
Voyager and a '86 528e, I used a pair of Coleman Family Service Radios that
worked out very well. We were, however keeping basically close to one
another, usually following front to back and not separated by other
vehicles.

Newer vehicles may have problems with the RF from the transmitter inside the
car and interference with the car's electronics. I notice stickers to that
effect on my E39 - anyone on the list have experience with that ?

The fault in the logic is the operative phrase about getting married.

After marriage come "modest" money sinks like - houses and kids, major
appliances (e.g. washers, refrigerators, furniture. . . .) college expenses
- - - -.

Usually we manage to work through them, but it tends to be a VERY long term
solution - Buy your toys NOW! :-)

BTDT (sorta, still working off some of those items)

I'm an amateur radio operator and my handheld radio used to have terrible
reception and transmission, with a lot of buzzing, inside my E30. I got a
mag-mount dual-band antenna on the trunk now, and it's a LOT better. :) As
for the FRS, I've had no problem using them in the car. Different frequency
range probably has to do with that.

I've heard the Toyota Land Cruiser is going to be discontinued as a U.S.
Model to avoid competition with the Sequoia. Seems the TLC will be only
available as the Lexus LX 470 soon. Hellva vehicle though.....if you ignore
the cheesy pot-metal bumpers and can get past the price, its the only SUV
I've ever driven that leaves you as refreshed at the end of a 1,000 mile
drive as the 740i does. It's basically a LS400 with a station wagon body
and 4WD. It can tow my future ITS car, once I can find one worth buying. I
asked my wife if she wanted a E39 540 Wagon to replace it, and she said "no
way".

New Chevy Suburban (out now) and the new Tahoe (Late Spring) based on the
'99 Silverados will be worthy contenders however at a much less expensive
price. I was VERY impressed with my '99 Silverado pickup truck and was kind
of sad to see it go.

Subject: Re: [uuc] Car-to-car radios?

I've had great results with the FRS (Family Radio Sevice) radios.
Long battery life--generally a weekend Rover rallye plus
"there-n-back" on a set of 3 AA alkaline batteries. I have the
Kenwood transceivers w/external mic/speaker. I keep the
"walkie-talkie" attached to my belt and the mic clipped to my collar.
I can run an earbud speaker out of the external mic too. There are
also earpiece/boom mic attachments. Voice activated is available but
not real useful in my Rover. Should work in a BMW though.

These radios are also useful "at the track." We used them all over
Greek Peak ski mountain for vehicile-to-vehicle (not in direct sight)
and vehicle-to-base communication during a major Rover event two
summers ago. We had a high success rate with attempted
communications. (Not perfect--there were some dead spots.)

When I did the research two years (or so) back I liked the Kenwood
radios better than the Motorola. Kenwood is a real popular
manufacturer of Ham radio equipment. If shopping today I would also
consider the models made by ICOM. The ergonomics (and at the time
lack of "scramble") of the Motorola didn't impress me. YMMV--just be
aware that there are choices in this market. (You have to look a
little harder to find anything but the Motorola Walkabouts.)

FYI my friend the "real" (Accto Phil Marx) BMW dealer sells a nifty
helmet (or headset) intercom box that will integrate with many FRS
handhelds--as well as CB and providing driver-passenger intercom.
Might be a hot setup for a track car or one that does a lot of
convoys. I'll be putting one of these boxes in the Rover if I can
find a set of inexpensive aircraft headsets--and time to wire it all
in! (My BMW application works fine w/ just using the handheld and
external mic.)

Please don't write and tell me this is illegal and/or dangerous. It's
not illegal so long as I'm not pumping the stereo through the
headsets. As for dangerous--I can't hear anything over the car noises
anyhow and I'm tired of arriving at my location with "rover-ring" in
my ears. (Not to mention losing my voice from yelled conversation w/
passenger.) In the end, preserving my hearing makes the use of
headsets in this application safer. (Will consider noise-cancelling
headsets though if I can find and afford them.)

Rgds.

My recollection of an article (actually it was a paragraph or two) is that
Toyota plans on continuing to sell the Land Cruiser. They believe that they
will be able to continue to sell 60,000 or so per year Land Cruisers, even
with the new larger SUV they are introducing. They cited the loyal group of
current owners as one of the reasons for their sales projections.

Duane is right, the newer style Land Cruiser with the V8 alleviates many of
the negatives of the earlier Land Cruisers.

Subject: [uuc] <E30> Frozen Locks.

I had a free evening yesterday and decided I would wash the 88 325 iS. I did take
pains to cover the keyholes with some, admittedly flimsy, scotch tape, but water seems
to have got in and frozen the locks.

Any and all help is appreciated. I had to get a ride in to work today morning.

Managed to get the rear truck lock undone at lunch, but the doors are stuck fast. To
top it off the car is in covered parking and not getting the sun. It does look clean
though!

What exactly is frozen? Is it just the cylinder (in which case I could heat it with
something) or the linkages along which water might have dripped?

Thanks in advance.

FYI, I just received the last fender roller available anywhere in the
world (so I'm told by Haweka). This is the very fender roller that
Tire
Rack rents out. Because people were renting them out and Haweka was
not
selling product they discontinued manfacturing them more than a year
ago. I however found what is supposed to be last one at the factory
in
Germany and ordered it back in late November. GUESS WHAT! I got it.
It's
a pretty KEWL TOLL (collieism). We won't be renting it out, however we
will be happy to roll fenders for anyone who needs it. This fender
roller is supposed to do a fantasic job and not damage the fenders.
