Subject: [uuc] '88 325i Spoiler on to 325es?

I've never liked the look of the front spoiler on my 1986 325es. The front
spoilers on the '88 and new models seem to really clean up the look of the
front of the car with the integrated foglights and such. I was wondering of
it was possible to change spoilers from my es spoiler to the new style. I'm
assuming the '88 would be the most compatable since they used the same big
chrome bumpers that are on my car, but came with the new style spoiler. What
parts would I need to mount it? or does it mount the same way as my old
spoiler did? Thanks!

Anyone have the phone number of Harold Audair's shop in Atlanta? I
want my car checked out before the Roebling Rd. drive school Feb 25.

Thanks. (Sorry for the non-atlanta WOB)

yes it should work.. *but* if you are moving too slow the computer may
not be able
to calculate the change in wheel acceleration

ie ABS doesn't work going real slow

try the same thing going forward (same speed) on ice.. it will probably
lock up as well

A few things may be stopping you

1- the little 'flap' sealing off the key hole may be frozen shut
2- the tumblers are frozen in their slots and won't move out of the way
of the key
3- the lock cylinder itself is frozen to the housing so it won't rotate

A few things that work to unfreeze

1- Hair dryer (or any heat gun) works *great* and fast.. just be careful
not to melt the black
plastic ring around the lock cylinder.. heat a bit.. wiggle the key..
heat a bit.. wiggle
(amazingly enough, this even works down to -30F no problem..)

2- Lock De-Icer (around here available at *every* gas station, hardware
store etc)
Little bottle costs a buck, squirt it in the keyhole, put key in and
wiggle.. will unfreeze
 in a few seconds

3- WD-40 and other lubricants usually manage to melt the ice but take a
bit longer

The amount of water inside is *very* small.. typically just a very thin
film.
My locks freeze up after rainy moist days and cryogenic nights :)

hope this helps

I was checking the oil in a friend's 528e last night and noticed some black
deposits when I removed the oil-filler cap. There were Black deposits on the
oil-sprayer bar and the rough surfaces of the rocker and cam shafts. The
deposits on the sprayer bar wiped off with my finger, but are a bit concerning
nonetheless. Anyone have any idea what might cause this?? Thanks

When this happened to me, a co-worker with a cigarette lighter came by and
we heated the key and inserted into the lock several times and GENTLY
applied pressure to turn the key until it finally opened.

I am sure there are better ways, but it worked great that day.

FWIW: This was on a Nissan that doesn't have the 'double locks' that BMW
uses.

Subject: [uuc] Re: lanesplitting in the US

I vividly remember my first trip to Europe, and one of the most striking
differences I saw was the way people drive. The comfort level for
distances was incredible. You'd see busses and trucks driving along no
more than a few inches from one another on the 'peripherique' and other
multi-lane highways around and through Paris. It was the first time I'd
ever seen motorcycles split lanes. Yes, drivers are much more agressive
in Europe, but my impression was that they are much more safer and more
skilled, in general, than the American driver.

As for splitting lanes in cars, actually there are places in the US
where people routinely split lanes, and where it works. I have fond
memories of a trip where I was able to cruise at 90 and 100 mph for
several hours, with very few interruptions. It was on a very wide two
lane road, Hwy 180, between Carlsbad, NM and Ft. Worth, Texas. We drove
for 7-8 hours or so at those speeds, only slowing for small towns. Cars
doing 70-80 mph (mostly pickup trucks) would see us approaching, and
move over to the right. Oncoming traffic would move over likewise, and
we made several high-speed passes like that, three cars wide. You just
give the other drivers a wave (they deserve a salute, for a job well
done), and continue on. I can't find the words to describe the feeling,
sort of like driving schools, but on a public road. Regrettably, I
haven't seen that type of cooperation on US highways very often,
though. That very memorable, positive experience is heavily outweighed
by other negative ones, where people stop on on-ramps instead of
merging, camp out in, or worse, BLOCK the interstate left lane ON
PURPOSE while traffic is trying to get by, etc., etc.

Some day I'm going to drive through west Texas again, on that highway.
If anyone knows of similar stretches of road like this, please pass the
info along!

Oh, and by the way, there was a thread about high speed stability of the
535i vs. the 535is/M535i some time back, either here or on the M535i
list. My car is a 535is. I don't know about the non-spoiler cars, but
the 'is' is rock-solid at 100-120!

Larry,
I tried a year ago to find a consumer site for them, the site I did find
required a password so it must have been for employees or dealerships. I
found OZ Monte Carlos at Discount Tire and their price was a little better
than Tire Rack (who couldn't get them at all).

What part of Ireland do they do this in?
Up here in the north they would rather, put a bullit
in your head, shoot out both your kneecaps, beat you
half to death with baseball bats, or put a bomb under
your car, rather than let you pass them.

Subject: [uuc] got illegal U-turn ticket, but I think I can beat it (long)

This is in Indiana btw, but anyone could help on the principal.

I was in the left-hand, southbound lane of a 4-lane non-divided 35mph road
in town. I remembered that I wanted to go to the bank, which was north of
there. So, at an intersection with a perpendicular minor street, I turn on
my left turn signal, traffic is already clear(IMHO anyway), so I use the
extra space in that intersection to make a U-turn.

A city cop happened to be coming southbound a couple blocks north of this
intersection, so he turned on his lights, did a U-turn, and pulled me over.
He said there has to be 750 feet of road without cars for me to do that.
So, since next car was about 500 feet away, and maybe there was a car
sitting to come out of a parking lot about 100 feet in front of that one, I
took his word for it and accepted the ticket.

I went straight from there to the courthouse to see how much the ticket was
for, and to see how many points it would take off. Well, the answers I
eventually got were $95.50 for the ticket, and 4 points off my license.
Unacceptable for what I think was a safe manuver. So, I go to investigate
the Indiana Code statute he cited I was in violation of. IC 9-21-8-22,
which reads:

"Sec. 22. A vehicle may not be turned so as to proceed in the opposite
direction upon any curve, or upon the approach to, or near the crest of a
grade,
where the vehicle cannot be seen by the person who drives any other vehicle
approaching from either direction within seven hundred fifty (750) feet.
As added by P.L.2-1991, SEC.9."

Now, the way I interpret that law is that any car within 750 feet in both
directions has to be able to SEE me, not that there can't be a car in that
area. In my situation, all cars within 750 feet in both directions COULD
see me. I do not believe I was putting anyone at risk, as other vehicles
only caught up with me because I stayed slow, being the first person to see
the cops lights come on.

I've never gotten a traffic violation before, and I don't want my (me being
an 18 year old) insurance to go up because of those 4 points. I have plenty
of other uses for $100 bucks too.

Please tell me your opinions. I have to either pay it by March 6th or
appear in court then. I'm thinking I can get it dismissed, but I've never
done a thing like this. I'm sure being a college student in a red BMW
didn't help my chances.. (cop probably has "oh, he must be rich since he has
a nice car" syndrome)

Grant - was going to get new wheels but not if I have to pay this ticket...
