The BBQ is at the track corral, traditionally at noon Saturday. Apparently there had been some confusion about this. See ya' there! On a recent trip from Dallas to Lubbock and then from Lubbock to Austin, nearly all of the drivers on two lane roads did this... I was quite surprised to see how quickly people pulled over to the shoulder (while maintaingn their speed) to facilitate the pass. No left turn signal needed..... Very refreshing, especially as opposed to the Dallas metroplex traffic! Mark Williams Dallas, TX Date: Tue, 1 Feb 2000 22:55:00 EST From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [uuc] Another type of "lane splitting" While living with a family in Helsinki, Finland a few summers ago I witnessed some really interesting driving....good driving that is. One example stands out. If you are driving on a rural two lane road and want to pass the car ahead of you, you simply turn on your left turn signal. The car you are passing will move about four feet to the right and onto the shoulder, while maintaining his speed. Meeting traffic is no problem. They see your turn signal and move to their right so that you now have a lane in the middle. You move left about halfway (straddling the center line) and make the pass. Everyone is happy and everyone works together. Of course, it surprised me the first time it was done. After that, I was doing it too. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Feb 1983 21:11:06 -0500 From: "Stan Jackson Jr." <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] CCA voting Somebody out there mentioned casting their wife's vote in the BMW CCA election. Since they need refinishing anyway, I have the option of doing them a little differently from how they are now. These are the M Double Spoke II 17" wheels that come standard on 96+ M3s. The three possibilities I'm considering are: having them redone the way they are now (I believe a metallic silver paint and clearcoat, right?), having them "polished" (I don't know the process, but the end result is that they are very shiny and mirrorlike), or...having them painted BLACK and clearcoated (the car is a very black '94 325is, BTW). I thought the body color-keyed wheels might be neat for their originality (plus that would hide brake dust), but I've never seen an M3 with wheels that match the body. So what do you guys think? If anybody has pictures of an M3 with these wheels painted body color that they want to email me, they get double bonus points. TIA for advice. One more quick question: is there any potential harm to the paint from using a squeegee to dry my car off after washing (assuming I don't drop it ;-)? Polished wheels scratch more easily, and show the scratches they get more so than "regular" wheels. And IMHO I don't like black wheels either. I like wheels to stand out, but not be the center of attention, distracting from the body shape. I'd go for the original look... I was just flipping through my last issue of my free subscription to Motortrend when I see these weird pipes coming out of an engine. I replaced the O2 sensor and now the problem is gone. This doesn't make sense since the O2 sensor signal is ignored when cold, but...whatever. I also put in new plugs, (old ones looked like new), and a dist cap and rotor, new air/oil/fuel filters, and changed the oil, but I don't see how those would affect the hesitation. Might have unplugged replugged something in the process that cleared the problem, but the problem is gone. There were > Black deposits on the > oil-sprayer bar and the rough surfaces of Doesn't necessarily mean that the engine is badly damaged though. My car came to me offa 3-year lease with that sort of thin black gunk. I can only assume the previous abuser used the cheapest oil at the maximum interval given by the lights. Since my switch to synthetic, the deposits are gradually going away. My motor burns no more oil than normal (1qt/3000), doesn't smoke, runs like a top, and lacks no power as far as I can tell. Keeps up with the others at the auto-x anyhoo. If there's a huge gelatinous black mass inside the valve cover and you can't see the hardware any more, then it's *really* time to worry. - -- John Bolhuis | "In America it is not considered to be mentally ill bolhuijo | when a woman advances on her prey in a discotheque @bolhuijo.com | setting with hardy cocktails present." | -Madonna ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Feb 2000 22:15:45 -0500 From: "tim ng" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] Harold Audairs shop (atlanta) 770-932-2775 memorized or just called toooo many times Tim Ng >Date: Wed, 2 Feb 2000 16:26:18 -0500 (EST) >From: Moe Drippins <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Subject: [uuc] Harold Audair's shop (Atlanta) >Anyone have the phone number of Harold Audair's shop in Atlanta? I can't offer you pics of a black 3 with matched wheels but I can tell you the smartest thing I did was have my wheel guy paint (actually powdercoat) my 17" 7 spoke V wheels in a metallic charcoal. Greatest color in the world for hiding brake dust. The wheels are on a metallic red car so if I were doing it on a black car I would stay with black rather than the charcoal. On the squeegee question I bought one of those "California" squeegees a few of months ago. At first I only used it on my daily drivers but it clearly was not harming the paint so I have used it on my restored 73 V 1800ES and my new E39 M Geeze car with no ill effects. Note this is not a standard squeegee but one made of silicone and marketed specifically for autos. I am very careful to inspect it before use for any imbedded dirt and watch it while I use it in case it picks up anything. Of course a chamois can also pick up trash and scratch your paint if you are not careful.
