My last post on this, I promise. The Friday night "reception" will
start at 6:45 pm at the Quality Inn Ocean Palms and will end ... um ...
uh ... yes, I'm sure it will end. The BBQ is at the track corral,
traditionally at noon Saturday. Apparently there had been some
confusion about this. See ya' there!

This method is employed by many drivers in rural Texas....
On a recent trip from Dallas to Lubbock and then from Lubbock to
Austin, nearly all of the drivers on two lane roads did this... I
was quite surprised to see how quickly people pulled over
to the shoulder (while maintaingn their speed) to facilitate the pass.
No left turn signal needed..... Very refreshing, especially as opposed
to the Dallas metroplex traffic!

Subject: [uuc] Another type of "lane splitting"

While living with a family in Helsinki, Finland a few summers ago I witnessed
some really interesting driving....good driving that is. One example stands
out.

If you are driving on a rural two lane road and want to pass the car ahead of
you, you simply turn on your left turn signal. The car you are passing will
move about four feet to the right and onto the shoulder, while maintaining
his speed. Meeting traffic is no problem. They see your turn signal and
move to their right so that you now have a lane in the middle. You move left
about halfway (straddling the center line) and make the pass. Everyone is
happy and everyone works together. Of course, it surprised me the first time
it was done. After that, I was doing it too.

Subject: [uuc] Wheel color question

After washing my car today, I've finally accepted the fact that I need to
get my wheels sanded and repainted (note to self and others: if new metallic
brake pads leave hard-to-clean dust, 409 kitchen cleaner is NOT the way to
remove it!). Since they need refinishing anyway, I have the option of doing
them a little differently from how they are now. These are the M Double
Spoke II 17" wheels that come standard on 96+ M3s. The three possibilities
I'm considering are: having them redone the way they are now (I believe a
metallic silver paint and clearcoat, right?), having them "polished" (I
don't know the process, but the end result is that they are very shiny and
mirrorlike), or...having them painted BLACK and clearcoated (the car is a
very black '94 325is, BTW). I thought the body color-keyed wheels might be
neat for their originality (plus that would hide brake dust), but I've never
seen an M3 with wheels that match the body. So what do you guys think? If
anybody has pictures of an M3 with these wheels painted body color that they
want to email me, they get double bonus points. TIA for advice.

One more quick question: is there any potential harm to the paint from using
a squeegee to dry my car off after washing (assuming I don't drop it ;-)?
Thanks.

Personally, I'd go with the brushed, flat look. Polished wheels scratch
more easily, and show the scratches they get more so than "regular" wheels.
And IMHO I don't like black wheels either. I like wheels to stand out, but
not be the center of attention, distracting from the body shape. I'd go for
the original look...

I was just flipping through my last issue of my free subscription to Motortrend

various exotic cars and I thought it was the top of the Aston Martin or
something. But no! It's the intake plenum of the M5! Man, it's simply a work
of art...you must see it. Turn to page 41 of the March issue....WOW

My '92 535i was having a hesitation problem when cold. I replaced the O2
sensor and now the problem is gone. This doesn't make sense since the O2
sensor signal is ignored when cold, but...whatever.

I also put in new plugs, (old ones looked like new), and a dist cap and
rotor, new air/oil/fuel filters, and changed the oil, but I don't see
how those would affect the hesitation. Might have unplugged replugged
something in the process that cleared the problem, but the problem is
gone. What an awesome car

Doesn't necessarily mean that the engine is badly damaged though. My
car came to me offa 3-year lease with that sort of thin black gunk. I
can only assume the previous abuser used the cheapest oil at the
maximum interval given by the lights. Since my switch to synthetic,
the deposits are gradually going away. My motor burns no more oil
than normal (1qt/3000), doesn't smoke, runs like a top, and lacks no
power as far as I can tell. Keeps up with the others at the auto-x
anyhoo.
If there's a huge gelatinous black mass inside the valve cover and
you can't see the hardware any more, then it's *really* time to worry.

Totally! I saw Autoweek TV a few days ago and the M5 was on there.. When
that engine revved up, I needed a drool rag.. Everything I've read about it
says it's the best sedan ever produced, ever, and I totally agree! Don't
get the Roundel (haven't become a CCA member.. YET!), but I can only assume
it's evaluation is as good as everyone else's.

Lane,
I have much experience on refinishing wheels for a couple of my V cars.
I can't offer you pics of a black 3 with matched wheels but I can tell
you the smartest thing I did was have my wheel guy paint (actually
powdercoat) my 17" 7 spoke V wheels in a metallic charcoal. Greatest
color in the world for hiding brake dust. The wheels are on a metallic
red car so if I were doing it on a black car I would stay with black
rather than the charcoal.

On the squeegee question I bought one of those "California" squeegees a
few of months ago. At first I only used it on my daily drivers but it
clearly was not harming the paint so I have used it on my restored 73 V
1800ES and my new E39 M Geeze car with no ill effects. Note this is not
a standard squeegee but one made of silicone and marketed specifically
for autos. I am very careful to inspect it before use for any imbedded
dirt and watch it while I use it in case it picks up anything. Of course
a chamois can also pick up trash and scratch your paint if you are not
careful.
