Subject: [uuc] Head gasket

Okay, dumb question. I would like to get the head gasket in my 528e
changed. I think a little coolent is leaking in. However, my mechanic
says it's like a whole day job and labor costs are going to go
through the roof (CDN$700).

Is this something I can do myself? I have the time, and I feel I'm
mechanically competent. Plus, the local library has the Chilton shop
books which have step by step instructions. Basically, I have to
disconnect the hoses, remove the bolts and lift the head off. Change
the gasket, and put everything back in the right spot... right...?

Comments?

I feel for you Grant..I have two sons in college...they both have E30's...I
tell them to watch traffic violations very closely...a young man in a Bimmer
in a small town is a easy target for the local sheriff! Shouldn't matter,
but it does happen.

In your case, the kind of car probably doesn't matter, but the situation
may...years ago I made a u-turn with my mother and "wife-to-be" in the car in
a small town in Illinois...late at night..NO cars in sight...we had visited a
local ice cream shop, but it was closed...I made a u-turn (remember no
cars...dead town)..as I left the "burg" and turned onto ILL Route 1 and
headed south...the good ole red lights came flashing! I got nailed for the
"stupid" U-Turn..my first violation..only $15 or so (back then)...

The cop was very talkative...his son was in Vietnam, he was lonely...I was
the unlucky recipient of his loneliness...I think he wanted someone to talk
to...

In your case, I'd "fight it"...say that you made a "safe" maneuver...how is
anyone going to gauge 500 ft vs. 750 ft?...who cares? as long as you were
driving safely..first violation and all, at least request the points be
dropped...give them their DAMN money and walk!

Don't take it too hard...it happen to all of us.

I've been under both of my son's E30 cars...one is an '86es the other an
'87is.....both have air dams...they are very similar regarding the way they
attach if memory serves, but the '87is front air dam is way more
sophisticated with regard to ground effects...much more panels and brake duct
cooling attachments....you could leave these panels off I suppose...can't
tell from above. Someone else please chime in if I'm wrong, but I blieve the
switch could be done relatively easy.

Aha. I thought so. I tried several times going backwards and forwards at

thought something might be hosed with the sensors (ice maybe). Thanks.

If I'm not mistaken (which I probably am), the 8 series was still being
produced for non US markets up until fairly recently. Like less than a year
ago? The E-31 was never very well recieved on these shores. Thought to be
too heavy, gimmicky, etc. But from what I can surmise, it didn't recieve all
that kind of flak overseas. Look in BMW Car (U.K. mag) and you'll see 8
series cars throughout, even if only in advertisements. Personally, I like
'em. I'd even "settle" for an 840 if the opportunity ever came about.

Lane, here is my $.2. I personally think the black would look drab...but
that is just my opinion. I only think black centered wheels look good on
older 911's...and that is with a polished lip. If you painted the entire
wheeld black I think it would look awful. You say you could hide brakedust
this way...this is hopefully not your point. Brakedust will ruin wheels if
left on and not cleaned off frequently. It bakes on worse the longer you
let it go. Wheel finishes will last a long time if they are kept free of
the damn brake dust.

Now, your other two options...silver with clear or polished. Hmmm...depends
on how much time you want to spend caring for them. Silver with clearcoat
is simple to clean. Polished wheels are a pain....you have to keep them
very clean and use mild soaps to clean them or they will spot. If they are
bare, you have to remove oxidation and polish them with a compound every now
and then. However, polished wheels are fun because you can get them as
shiny as you want. There is another option for polished wheels, and that is
to have them polished, then anodized. This will provide protection on the
bare aluminum, but you will loose a few shades of 'brightness' with the
clear anodized layer.

Subject: [uuc] <Trivia> BMW NA manual tranny sales

While perusing Ward's site, came across an interesting (depressing?)
bit of trivia. Seems that in '98 (the last year for which figures
are current), only 36% of 3-series and 12% of 5-series US BMW buyers
opted for a manual transmission. It would be interesting to compare
those figures to similar models from other manufacturers, but that
may be hard since most don't even offer that option.

Incidentally, this bit of info came from a story about how Lincoln is
considering offering a manual tranny in the V8 version of the LS. It
would be a bold move considering less than 2% of LS buyers got the
V6/5-speed combo. Guess they are really serious about expanding
their market clientele.

I recently had to change my coolant pump and thermostat on a '95 M3. After

belts have less than 2k. What should I do to quiet these puppies down?

Hi all,

In the recent cold weather I have noticed that no matter how long I wait for
the engine to warm up, no hot air comes out of the vents until I start to
move. I can hear the heater fan motor going the whole time.

On all the other cars I have had, I put the windshield defroster on whilst I
scrape the ice/snow off, but on the BMW (95 M3) it just doesn't help.

Any ideas, is that normal ?

(PS I have an underdriven pully so I would expect this if the heater was
electric)

Thanks Mike

Subject: [uuc] E28 AC belt / fuel line question

Well, thanks to the list for the AC belt comments. What I did last night
was put it on the crank hub. Then pushed it as far on the AC
condenser/compressor..whateva, as it would go. Cranked the ignition for a
millisecond and BINGO..it was on. Wow, that was too easy!

Now, I was asking the list about my fuel smell early this year. I found
where the leak is, and it only manifests when cold. The leak stops when the
engine is warm at all. I can see dripping if I look down where the engine
case meets the tranny (bell housing, etc) from the drivers side. I see the
two fuel lines running to the injectors...I take it one is fuel in and one
is overflow, or a check of some type? These lines sort of disappear and I
can see no way of replacing them without cutting off the part that is old
and crackling and splicing some new on. Anybody been here done that on an
E28 ///M5? What needs to come out of the engine to accomplish this? It
looks as though you have to remove at least the air meter stuff going to the
butterflies...and the coolant fill bowl too. Are there other fuel lines I
am missing here other than these two that are right next to each other
running to the fuel rail and injectors?

Subject: RE: [uuc] <E30> Frozen Locks

According to my recollection of the owner's manual I used to have for '88
325's (before the significant other spilled coffee all over it and eternally
glued it together), the cars have at least a driver's side door lock heater.
Energize it by pulling up the handle and holding up to heat the door lock.
I always wondered about this, but during the first snow storm of this season
I went out after work and found my double-locked driver door to be
thoroughly frozen (meaning: tried many times in the 45 seconds I was
standing out there in below-zero temps with snow over my ankles in dress
shoes and 20 mph winds) and had no de-icer with me. So I pulled up on the
handle for 10 seconds, tried the key again, and it opened fine. Either the
system works great or I have very strong powers of suggestion...if so I
should figure out how to make them work on the fiance...
