That meant to be sent directly to the recipient..... didn't notice that
when you reply it auto sends to the digest as opposed to the original

Well, Most Hertz places have Volvo sedans, which is better than the usual
fare.. You'll have to go a specialty place to get a BMW, I bet.

Subject: [uuc] <E36> ! Ticking lifter !

Over the last couple days, my E36 325i has been a little wheezy starting up
in the sub freezing weather. Seemed a reasonable sign of its 143k, plus
everything quieted down at operating temps.

Last night, as I was coming home from work, the noise level changed, and
when I checked under the hood at home, I heard what I'm pretty sure is a
"ticking lifter," a rapping noise under the spark plug cover that turns to a
grinding kind of noise when I blip the throttle. The car also seems to have
developed a bit of an appetite for Oil (a quart in the last 1k when it
really didn't use any til then).

Questions:

Has anyone been here with an E36?

Bad lifter? Bad valve?

Anything to do while I have that part of the motor open?

Thanks,

I think that color was known as Blaze Orange or Safety Orange. The
only known problem with those wheels is that the color seems to
attract cones.

I'm in the process of attempting this conversion. I have the spoiler/valence/nose
panel from an 89 iS and will trying to fit it to an 89 iC. The 89 iC had a old
spoiler.

As and when I actually get down to doing it I'll post the results to the List. This
may take some time as I'm working on my 88 iS at this time and still need to paint the
spoiler the color of the iC.

I am also going to add the 'nicer' plastic bumpers and the rear skirt. These I do not
have yet. The latter will require welding from what I can see.

Anyone know who was piloting that Mercedes? I've heard it was one of the

When I bought my 94 540i in December it had 58K. I just turned 61K and I'm
about to change the oil. Is it advisable, hell is it even safe, to switch to
synthetic at this stage of the game? There's nothing in the previous owners
records to suggest that anything other than good ole dino juice was used in
the car.

it offends me when people refer to Asian descended people or owners of
Japanese autos as "riceboy". several of my friends are Asian and they are
"top notch". i think we could all be mature enough not to stoop to name
calling or using generalities that sort people by where they (or their
families) were born. i do think some of the things done on some cars (from
every type of people) are very silly/loud/obnoxious, etc. looking, but that
is not a reason to use a slang word that is offensive to a race of people.
put yourselves in their place and imagine how it feels. there are plenty of
other adjectives that could be used without implying that people from aisa
are "tacky" or have less taste than __________(insert your heritage here).
ok,, enough on my soapbox.,,, but since someone asked, i felt the need to
share.

I think this issue has been beaten to death several hundred thousand
times BUT there's no "risk" in switching to synthetic oils at any
time after break-in. Some cars even come with synthetic oil as the
factory fill. The only "risk" is that the synthetic oil, which flows
much better than organic oil, will find pin-hole leaks and start to
ooze.

A co-worker wants to buy the E46 M3 and is required to put down a $500 deposit that is
non-refundable. Since the price of the car is un-announced and appears to be on the
edge of what he believes he would like to pay, he is not certain he would want to buy
it when the time comes to buy.

To be honest, I'm not sure how this deposit business works, having bought all my cars
with cashier's checks so I thought I would ask the List.

Does the collective wisdom of the List believe it will be difficult/impossible to sell
the 'reservation' of whatever the deposit buys you if one does not want to buy the
car?

I should point out that the aim of this reservation is not to make a profit like some
new E39 M5 owners. This person has been agonizing over this decision - E46 M3, E39
540i 6-sp, etc. - for months.

Thanks.

Some of us Asians don't have such thin skins as to think that the

lack of class.

I think I remember hearing rumors of possible weakness in the "rear
subframe" (?) of E36 M3s. My car is a 95 model, and while it has been over
a year since my last track time (due to an extended vacation in Korea), I
wonder if I need to check this out before the autocross/driving school
season starts. Any advice? I do have access to a lift, so is this
something I can check myself? What should I look for? TIA.

Neil,
I think the answer to all these questions is it depends entirely on the
dealer that has your co-workers deposit. Not only what is in writing but
is this dealer one of the good guys (trustworthy) or one that deserves
the name "stealer". I can see why a dealer would put "nonrefundable" in
the contract to keep out the gadflies but also not hold you to it as
long as he can move the car. The bottom line is you can't absolutely
depend on any thing that is not spelled out in the sales contract.

My own experience with my M5. I put down $1K on 12/4/98 with a guarantee
of a final price of MSRP on delivery and a stipulation of another $4k
down when the car was scheduled for production. My contract did not
specify that the deposit is either refundable or nonrefundable but a
separate section in the contract that outlines specific $ damage amount
if the buyer backs out was left blank. I went back in Oct 99 to pick out
color and trim for a week 49 production date. When I went to write them
the check for the $4k additional deposit, they told me they didn't need
it! Picked up the car 12/28/99, paid the balance. OUCH. Dealer did not
require either cashiers or certified check.

Since I hadn't ever dealt with this dealer before the backup position I
had formulated in my own mind if I didn't buy the car was in order,
apply the deposit to the M Coupe I was also lusting after, try and get
The $ back, or walk away from it and chalk it up to the cost of another
expensive life experience. YM (and utility of $ curve) MV.
