Steve reports:
<<<<<I did a big brake conversion on an SUV this past weekend and the most
difficult part of the whole job was removing the old brake hoses. The shop
I was working at had BG Penetrating Oil and it was not the miracle product
we were looking for (not that PB Blaster, Kroil, Rost Off or any other
would have been better). The flare wrench rounded off the fitting and
heat/vice grips was the only thing that finally worked. Boy, I hate
removing old brake lines. SD>>>>>

All things being equal, it's easier to cut the line at the joint and use a
socket, because usually you get one chance with the wrench, whereas the
socket (6 point please) increases the odds. Otherwise, it's off to get the
vice grips, in which case you're going to replace the line anyway. Clearly,
there may be times when you need to save the line, but I'd rather bend up a
new one than argue with a stripped pipe fitting.

Exactly right. Time when cold is the worst thing. Warm it up quickly.
Regarding the vents, the heat comes from the floor vents under the seats.>>>

With the floor vent lever open and the fan on, there was definitely heat
coming out under the 535 seats this morning.

Have you seen this site? http://www.riceboypage.com/

Rice-Boy is a stereotype. The typical Rice-Boy can be identified by his
car, or rather what he does to it. Generally, Rice-Boy will start out with
a car that was not meant to go fast (typically a Honda Civic), and attempt
to "fix it up," usually consisting of aftermarket rims, lowering springs
and an aftermarket exhaust system with a large exhaust tip.

Most Rice-Boy cars (or "Rice Rockets") have the usual complement of
stickers proudly displaying features that the car might or might not have,
most notably, the Honda VTEC sticker from the later model Preludes, and the
plaques from the later model Integras.

Rice-Boys do not exclusively drive Japanese cars. There are quite a few
fake Mustang '5.0's and Camaro Z28's out there, as well as quite a
few strange looking Neons.

Riceboy in my personal opinion is not a derogatory remark and in no way
eludes to somebody's race or national origin it is a term with many
different definitions based on peoples perceptions. Just because you
perceive "Riceboy" to be a slang racist term referring to persons of Asian
descent does not mean it was used in that manner or was meant to be used in
that manner by the writer.
My personal opinion (<----- key word there) is that a riceboy is any
person regardless of Race, Religion, Gender, or National Origin that does
things to their automobile that make it seem or appear to be faster but
actually have no real performance value or a negligible performance value.

Has anyone replace the door seal themselves? It appears
mine is going bad. Not that it is allowing water to get past
the seal but I have noticed a high pitch squeal that varys with
speed. If you look at it there is about a 12 to 14 inches where
the chanel it forms is not longer the same shape as the rest
of the seal.

I asked about reserving and E46 M3. Ben Keyes replied and mentioned the wording of
the contract between dealer and buyer would be important in determining if the
reservation could be sold and the deposit recovered.

Any leads on who could the contract wording for my co-worker? He is in the Detroit

If they can get a favorable position on a list (in the first say 3-5 cars delivered to
dealer) then they might want to go the non-refundable route & get a signed agreement
with the dealer. as long as they word the agreement correctly, they can then transfer
(sell) their spot in line to someone else & lose nothing. I'm sure that someone on
the list can suggest a resource to get a contract/agrement drawn up for the car at
MSRP, as your friend wants it. there is really nothing to lose in a situation where
they have a binding contract for the car at MSRP w/o added dealer mark-ups. the
dealer will be making ~$5,700 on a $50k car w/13% mark-up, so they are making their
money even at MSRP, so gouging for "market adjustment" or floor mats & such is just BS.

Are you both using Netscape? IE5 does it just fine. My guess is that the
coder of the page didn't do his html correctly and messed up a table tag.
With Netscape, if you mess up table structure, even just a tiny bit, it will
just totally ignore the WHOLE table. IE is much better about that and will
usually interpret the table correctly.

Neil,

Clearly your co-worker should read the contract before forking over the
cash, but I think you'll find that any "non-refundable" provision is
effectively unenforceable by the dealer. It's hardly like the dealer would
have any trouble selling the car to someone else if your friend backed out.
There is a possibility that once the color/spec has been determined that
some uniquely rancid choices could make the car less saleable, but even this
is pretty unlikely. Also find out when (and if) they plan to cash the check.

It just seems to me that unless the dealer can show they lost a sale or it
cost them money then it's pretty bogus to make it non-refundable - but of
course they do it to stop frivolous orders and to (rightly) frighten off the
unsure.

I think your friend should give them the money and tell them his doubts
about the price, and make the order contingent on the price being below $xk.
Also, if the 540 he'd be getting would be from them, I can't believe they'd
have a problem transferring the deposit to a different car.
