I should have bought a Lotus Seven, or a 2002 with no AC and lots of rust so it would be nice and light. All those stupid magazines that think this is the best sports sedan on the planet haven't any idea what real enthusiasts want. Yessiree, even the tires take too many pounds of air! No wonder it's so heavy. I can't wait to rip out all the leather and airbags and nav system and CD changer and a couple of those extra cylinders so it will be a real M car. Smashing out that glass sunroof should help too, and it doesn't rain here much. So I decided to just leave the stock shifter in the trunk. Maybe I'll throw a spare tire back there too, that should add a few more pounds. The prevailing theory was that sales were too low (less than 900 units in total for the US) and that certifying the new 3.0l engine in this unique body style with both manual & auto trans would be too expensive for the number of sales. A common cost number I have heard thrown around about certifying cars is $1million per engine/trans, so that would be more than $1,000 per car sold, which is pretty steep. I would suggest checking around for '99 M Coupes for sale - there seem to be a fair number of people selling theirs with pretty low miles (usually less than 10,000) for $33-35k, which is about what you would pay for a new 2.8l coupe. again, the message board would be a good place to start. various thought are around relating to the resale of the 2.8's now that they're no longer available & the '00 & '99 M's since the current 3.2l 240hp US only engine is to be replaced with a ~340hp "world" engine, common with the new E46 M3. Production with this engine is to start in September of this year if rumours & production schedules that several people have cited/posted. There has been a lot of discussion about the size of the new M3 engine as rumour has it that it's no longer a 3.4l, but really a 3.25l I am not certain what the big deal is either way, as 340 (or even 325) hp is a big increase beyond the currently available US engine. I think that the cars wil hold value long term, but be more of an acquired taste as they are not as mainstream as M3's or z# roadsters. Waiting for the rush of people to sell theris when the larger engine comes out may be a good idea, maybe not. the '99 & '00 Z3/M coupes are virtually identical. list of differences that I recall : '00 Z3 & M have chrome rings around headlights under the covers, '99 don't have them as all other Z3's '00 Z3 got chrome exhaust tips vs none for '99 '00 M got auto dimming inside review mirror as a running change in production early in the model year at some point M got Michelin Pilot Sports as standard tire, replacing Dunlop 8080E's - timeframe not clear not sure if this applies to the optional 17" wheels on the 2.8l '99 M was arctic silver, '00 was titanium (or the other way round) dark green color changed from '99 to '00, can't recall the names interior color availability may have changed slightly as well. Here's a riddle for you. I took the car in a couple weeks ago, and the dealer said they confirmed the oxygen sensor was in fact broken/bad/dead, whatever. They confirmed this by checking the voltage in the sensor, and swapping in a new sensor and comparing the voltage. So they installed the fourth O2 sensor at no charge. I drove to a Mobil Station and filled up with premium gas (switching from Shell premium), and went home. Well guess what? I put about 100 miles on the car since the service, and the "Check Engine" light just came on again. This time, the flash code says "1222", which corresponds to Lambda Control #1. (Don't know how this differs from the fault last time of EGO Sensor #1.) Background: I moved here (St Louis) in July 99, and my house is only one mile from my office. Could the daily short trips be a factor, since the car doesn't really have a chance to warm up? Granted I was here six months before I had a problem, but maybe the onset of winter in the November time frame made the difference. Last time I had the sensor replaced (#4) the dealer said they would have the regional rep look at the car if it happened again.
