Mike - sounds like the ABS is working fine. If you think about it,
it is activating when it senses the wheel not turning. Think about
what can happen when braking agressively across bumpy pavement..
you have traction, then no traction, then traction.. the ABS
senses the no-traction condition (lack of wheel turning) and activates.

It is rather well known in the BMW moto world that under these
conditions - your stopping distance with ABS *will* be longer..

A couple of thing to try:

1. Tires - marginal ones can cause the wheel to start to lock
and trigger the ABS - what condition are yours in?

2. Brake less agressively..

ABS is not a cureall or magic for the brakes.. it is designed
to keep the car steerable in panic braking situations - and that's
ALL it's designed to do. No manufacturer will ever claim it
shortens braking distances - and some do admit that in most
cases compared to a really skilled driver (who knows threshold
braking) - it lengthens the distance.

Best,

Ladies and Gentlemen: A non-subscriber to the digest asked me to post his
request for any leads on a clean, reasonable miles '95 or '96 525i for sale.
He wants a dark color if possible and a 5 speed. If you know of any in this
category and are close to Indianapolis, please respond to me off the
digest. Thanks very much. Dennis Brown, Hoosier Chapter.

I actually counted three that went by on the first lap. About 3-4 hours
into the race the same one spun in the exact same space two laps in a
row(car 62 I think). It actually finished the race. It was amazing to
look at it in the pits after the race(lots of missing parts and duct
tape). When I get my pictures back I will get them posted if any one is
interested.

@$#*&, so we have another IRL/CART here. :-( Was wondering why they were
calling it Grand / Can Am Road Racing Series or somesuch.

There were three privateer M3's - Fairbanks Racing's #50 / 55, the ones we
saw at PTG, and someone else's #62. There was also a privateer Sports Racer
BMW that was the first to drop out. One of the Fairbanks cars finished I
think 7th in class / 21st overall, the other M3's were a bit farther down,
mechanical?

I'm hoping it's a good idea, since I would like to buy out my coupe at the end
of the lease (which will be May 2001).. and I'm hoping the resale of the 3.2l
(240HP) ones will have dropped enough that either BMW-financial will be
willing
to do a bit of dickering - or I can find one in equal condition to mine for
less than the buyout bucks.. There is a lot of chat on the messageboard
Ben mentioned (I'm a fairly regular visitor) about people who are 'waiting'
for the bigger engine before buying.. (I can't imagine WHY they'd need
more power.. but to each his own..)

About 2 weeks ago my "check engine" light came on... So I called the dealer &
they said not to worry about it & to bring it in today & they would check it
out.... Well the dealer just called to say that one/some of the pistons were
wrecked & that they were ordering replacements & my car should be ready in a few
days...

Q1. Is this normal?
Q.2. This sounds serious.. is it?
Q.3. Should I be on the lookout for any other related problems that may develop
out of warranty b/c of this?

Yesterday I went to have my 1994 325is inspected. The car past all tests
except the hydrocarbon emissions test. According to the test my car is
emitting a higher amount of hydrocarbons than the state of Delaware would
like. I did pass the Carbon Monoxide test. The car currently has a JC chip
and a drop-in K&N air filter, could either of these be the culprit? Non
branded gas (I do use 93 octane)? I was wondering if anyone had an idea on
how to fix this problem so I can get my car to pass inspection?

Hi all,
Just wanted to throw my .02 into this. I have had no problem at all towing
anything with my 90 Grand wagoneer. I think it is the perfect
econo-tow/off-road vehicle because: cheap to buy, cheap parts, easy to
modify(I have mine up to 300 hp!), better four wheel drive sytem than most
poser SUV's of similar age, built like a tank( got rearended by a Corolla,
totalled her car, did $700 damage to me), cool retro woody look, and lots of
comfort for long drives. Granted, 10 mpg ain't too hot, so I'm gonna add an
aux. tank.

Greg,

Was the car nice and warm before taking the test? It is generally
recommended that you drive the car for 30 minutes prior to the
inspection and then do not turn the car off, if you are forced to wait
in line at the inspection station leave the car running. The mods
should not cause you to fail emissions. But, I would make sure the air
filter is clean.

Subject: Re: [uuc] M3's at Daytona and the Norma N2000-BMW

Actually, there were 4 M3's entered, and one Sports Racer
with a BMW engine (the Norma)

The M3's were:

#50 of Genesis Racing with Rick Fairbanks, Nick Ham,
Bill Auberlen and Chris Gleason, finished 47th overall,
26th in class (blown engine)

#54 of Bell Motorsports with Hans Stuck, Matt Drendel,
Ron Johnson and Scott Neuman, finished 80th overall,
and 36th in class (dead last, had a crash on friday and
didn't start the race)

#55 of Genesis Racing with Dennis Crowley, Rick Fairbanks,
Felipe Rezk, Shareef Malnik and Chris Miller, finished
70th overall, 33rd in class (blown engine)

#62 sponsored by Petromoly with Joseph Safina, Ross
Bluestein, Carlos Dequesada, Hugh Plumb, Mark Hillstadt
and Scooter Gabel, which finished 21st, and 9th in class
(had several crashes throughout the day, but it was the
only M3 to actually still run at the finish)

The Sports Racer Norma BMW was:

#78 of Sezio Florida Racing with Patrice Roussel and
Edouard Sezionale - the story with the norma was that the
BMW engine was running strong, but they had electrical
problems with the brand new car after 13 laps, and
couldn't see engine warning lights at the dash, and decided
to abort the race, rather than risking blowing the engine
later due to lack of warning.

More about the Norma:

"Seen for the first time was the Norma N2000-BMW. This
new French racer features an all-carbon chassis,
BMW 4.0-liter V8 motor (the same as Rafanelli used to
win Laguna Seca in 1998), and a Hewland sequential
6-speed gearbox. Owner/Driver Edouard Sezionale was
on hand, and says the team will contest the full ALMS
season and Le Mans with the swoopy new car."
