I'm no physics major, but wouldn't hitting an equal-weight car at the same speed be like hitting an immovable wall? You'd in effect hit each other and all lateral motion would stop, leaving both cars at exactly the same place as they were at initial impact, since the opposing forces are equal. Wouldn't the force required to completely instantly stop a car at a set weight and speed always be the same, no matter if the opposing object is a moving car or a immovable wall, or is this one of those more complicated force issues that I'm missing? OBMWC - I went for a relaxing country drive today in my E30. doing 95 on a country road, heart pounding, sunroof open, 30 degrees outside, heater on full blast, and.... calm Bach CD playing loudly. As I said in my other post, it is the delta V that counts. Hitting a wall at 60 or hitting an equal mass oncoming car, each doing 60 is the same. Each car sees a delta V of 60. Move your frame of reference and the oncoming car example is the same as hitting a stopped car while doing 120. Hitting a brick wall is the same as hitting an oncoming car, equal mass, same speed as yours, or a lighter car going faster, or a heavier car going slower. The mass times velocity determines momentum, but for you, the delta V rules. You must have misunderstood that final exam question. You are correct. Its the change in velocity that counts. Hitting a brick wall at 60 means your change in velocity (known as delta V) is 60 mph. Two cars approaching, each going 60 will stop dead so each has a delta V of 60. Same impact. Hitting a parked car (equal weight) while you are going 60 means after the impact, both cars will travel at 30 (conservation of momentum). The delta V for each is 30. This impact has 1/4 the energy for you as hitting a wall. If you are going to hit something, and you can choose what it is, hit something that will move. Parked cars are excellent objects to hit. Especially light ones. Gary Derian <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Gary Derian wrote: > > Hitting an immovable wall at 60 mph is the same as two cars of equal > weight > > head-on, each going 60. Dear Digesters, My rear electric windows failed to operate yesterday. Can anyone suggest what I could look for for a quick DIY fix or do I have to send it in to a workshop for a detailed analysis and fix (read: more expensive solution)? Details: Both rear windows failed at the same time. There were no motor problems associated with the 2 rear windows before. They are stuck in the up/closed position. Switches at the rear door and the ones near the gear lever dont seem to work the windows. No accidents or passengers using the rear seats at all. Suspect: Connection problem? Fuse blown? Motor or switch problem? (But unlikely since both left and right failed simultaneously) Any ideas and words of wisdom are appreciated. I've replaced a few window regulators on my E30, but never a motor. I have instructions for the R&R of the regulator on my website if you need it. Good luck. My wife, 5'2", 130#, 53 years old, had a relatively "serious" collision last year: driving to work(school teacher), country road, 55mph, 70 year-old man pulled out in front of her from a side road. Estimated speed of her '84 533i at impact was 45mph. She t-boned the other car at the B pillar, totaled both cars. She sustained two cracked ribs, and a cut knee where it impacted the underside of the dash. No other injuries. No internal, no neck, no headaches, etc. No airbags. I musta been doing a buck seventy five when I hit that puppy and I walked away without a scratch. There wasn't a piece of the car left that was bigger than a quarter. That airbag saved my life. Of course I was young and foolish then... Dissenter #1: I'm surprised you're old and foolish. Don't you realize that airbags lead to heroin?
