In the '80s, Rover and Lotus tried to develop a system of adaptive noise control to c*ncel out engine and tranmission noise. Arguments that the cost and weight of sound-deadening would fall - and that electronics would get cheaper and cheaper - fell on deaf(ened) ears. Anyway the side-effect of all this palava was that by switching off the feedback, you could get the supposed noise-c*ncelling output to constructively inferfere with the existing engine noise, turning a modest four-pot into a flat-plane-crank V8. Lotus, I later discovered, blew up several base-model Citroen AXs fitted with the same noise enhancement equipment, as the glorious soundtrack had the test drivers stretching the engines too far (no governors on these cars I guess). No manufacturer is more enthusiastic about stripping dead weight than Lotus, but 1992 the world was in a big recession, research spending was down and the idea was quietly dropped. She put it simply: go buy a BMW because that's the only thing you'll be happy enough to keep. So - -- tonight -- I drove out of Shelly BMW in Buena Park CA with a 1999 323i. Egads... what have I done? I drove a sport package and the Premium package and found myself unhappy with the sport so I bought the Premium package with a slush box! I almost ended up with a 323Ci, but the 323i was a much better solution for my situation (3 & 5 year old kids). Anyway... I am happy as a clam except for one problem: the passenger seat electrically controlled recline mechanism doesn't work now. Arrggghhhh! I am leaving for San Francisco tomorrow and I doubt they can get to it right away. Oh well... You have to take residential surface streets to get across town. In the 50s, many expressways were planned to crisscross San Francisco, only a few were built. At least two of those, the Embarcadero and Central Freeways, were damaged in the '89 Loma Prieta earthquake. The Embarcadero was mostly torn down right away and not rebuilt, while the Central partially survived another 7 years before it was torn down and not rebuilt at residents request. I find other drivers in SF are, for the most part, respectful. It's all the damn pedestrians, panhandlers, and a certain subset of cyclists that act like they own the WHOLE street width or they pretend that vehicular traffic doesn't exist. Either that, or they know they can get a good insurance settlement getting hit by a motorist who can afford to park a car in San Francisco. The city actually prefers it this way, and have proposed various ideas to restrict automobiles in the downtown area. Their favorite appears to be raising the price of parking in the city-owned parking garages to exorbitant levels, or raising the excise taxes on the privately owned ones. I did about three turns and oil started spewing all over the place, Hmm this is not normal, normally I have to do many more turns before the oil starts coming out. Then I realize that the bolt is in my hand, and it's only about 25% it's normal length. ARGGH, that's right, the bolt broke and the rest of it is still screwed into the pan. I really don't want to have to drop the oil pan after hearing what a pain it is. Does anybody have any good ideas on how to get the rest of the bolt out without dropping the pan?
