Reminds me of something I just saw in the Chicago BMW CCA rag: a guy is
selling a '99 M coupe or M Roadster (I forget exactly) with 20 MILES on
the odometer, because he's taking delivery of a '00 M5 and needs the
space! Man, I'd have to have a lot of money, and not a lot of
foresight, to get a brand new $40k + car and realize within the first 20
miles that I should get a $70k + rocket instead.

Not to imply that Eric can't figure out his upcoming weekend vehicle
needs on Tuesday, just that they both have an expensive stable of cars.

Before you get alldata, check out Brett Anderson's post on:

tml>. Sounds like they don't do a terribly good job of sorting the
important stuff from the crap.

Subject: [uuc] Re: Weird noise from my '95 M3

Hey group,
My '95 M3 has recently been making a whining noise that is rpm related.
Here's a little history that might help with the diagnosis:
Back in October while attending the Road Atlanta driving school, I heard a
*really* loud roar that was rpm related as well as steering related while
breaking in my newly installed euro rotors and R4 race pads (please read I
was driving the $#@! out of the car). Well, I freaked and slowly got the car
back to my parking area. I suspected that maybe the steering fluid was low.
It turned out that I was correct and added some fluid (thank you again Mike
Lawrence for the ATF : ).
The system immediately quieted down and I finished out the two day event
without any more problems. I should probably add that when I checked the
fluid, it was very frothy (sp?)...lots of bubbles, but again, once I got some
fluid in the resevoir, everything was fine.
Since the event, I've had to add more fluid. (yes I've found the leak) Within
the past week, I've started to hear a whining noise that I suspect might be
coming from the steering pump. The noise kinda reminds me of a stereo that
has not been grounded properly or something like that and you get engine
whine over your speakers. I know it's not my stereo since I've completely
turned that off and still hear the noise. The noise seems to be the loudest
when the rpms hit 1000 to 3000 and it will make this noise even while in
neutral without any steering input. I've double checked the fluid level and
that looks fine.
Does a steering pump make a relatively high pitched whining sound (not a
squeal) when they begin to go bad? I've got 58K on the car.
Any advice on helping me figure this out is greatly appreciated.

Ken Arutunian '95 M3

PS it's *not* making a noise like when you turn the wheel all the way to the
end and hear that power steering type noise.

Remove the lid.
Disconnect the switch wiring.
Pull up the rubber seal around the edge.
Squeeze the wire clip on the shock tower.
Lift the front of the box, pull it in towards the centre of the car at the
same time.

To put it back in, start with the drain tube, into the hole in the side of
the inner fender.

Subject: [uuc] Hot four-pots

John and Eric have written about four-pot BMWs still be produced for other
markets - the 316i and 318i can indeed be bought in varying guises (318i as
a coupe and the aforementioned "touring"). Confusingly, both use 1,895 cc
SOHC 8v motors, codenamed M43 TU - same dimensions as the old M44, but in
different stages of tune. The 318i is also made in South Africa these days.

The usual way of getting extra grunt out of these motors - the M40, M42 and
M43 similarly - is to bore them out. Hartge has been building a
well-regarded 2.1 litre version for several years, using either the 8 or
16-valve heads. Nothing out-of-this-world, just bigger pistons, better
breathing and sportier cams; even the stock ECU is retained. Other German
tuners offer 2.1s, and one even does a 2.3 which I think is the limit for
the M4x block. The ti was a common recipient of this mod, especially as the
factory 323ti didn't appear till later (and not at all in most markets).

Hartge claims something along the lines of 170 bhp and 170 lb-ft for the 2.1
16v, not far from the 2.5 six (in number terms, anyway). Whether production
of hotted-up fours continue using the newer M43 TU motors remains to be seen
- - the newer M43 TU has only eight valves and now has balancer shafts, but I
don't know how well it would respond to internal performance upgrades.
