A hearty second here. Wonderfully clear.

Plus, after tearing my suspension apart last weekend I actually have a bit of
comprehension. <g>

know if BMW will still be producing a four cylinder engine for these cars to
compete this season? Does BMW still produce 4 cyl versions of the e46 in
Europe?"

E46 4-cylinder models are still produced in Europe. About a month ago I saw an
E46 318i here in the Orlando area. Thought it was just a 323 or 328 intil I
spied the single exhaust tip. I believe the E46 4-cylinders are new 2-valve
engines, the 1.8 has around 120hp if memory serves. The one I saw must have
been a UCF student or something.

"Also, could anyone provide some insight as to how they are able to get so
much horsepower out of a 4 cyl engine without turbo or supercharging it?
(these aren't allowed)."

By turning LOTS of rpm. Big cams, big throttle bodies, big valves, big
compression ratios, big headers, etc. It all adds up to lots of high rpm hp.
However, I don't think any of them make over 200 lb/ft of torque.

Asking for a car shopping co-worker (no, I'm not planning to replace my E30
just yet):

Does anyone have the production date when the 525i went to single VANOS?

How about the production date when it went to double VANOS? Or had they
phased out the 525i by the time double VANOS was introduced?

As always, TIA for any info on this.

Does anyone know how to buy BMW stock in the US? Specifically, I'm
trying to buy it through Ameritrade. I know that someone "makes a
market" for BMW in the US (Merrill Lynch?) -- do I have to go through
them?

The two symbols I've seen are BAMXF and BMW.F (on the Frankfurt
exchange). Neither do anything for me when I type them in...

BTW, for those of you looking to own part of your favorite car company,
BMW has been getting solid "BUY" recommendations for a while now.
Basically, they all say that Rover losses have bottomed out, and BMW is
on track to make a solid comeback.

NB: I am not an investment professional, though I am related to one...

I think I'm in trouble for this next event, as I assume that Steve
won't have a video camera bouncing around his interior next time and
will be able to concentrate more on hauling that big 540i around the
cones! I on the other hand am now 1 autocross wiser, and my tires are
closer to being slicks than last time. If I can avoid the rally-style
turns, I'll prevail again! (hmm, why do I have more cone marks on the
side of my car than on the front?) (And who do I have to bribe to get
a course with no straightaways?) (And why do I keep talking in
parentheses?)

To quote Homer Simpson, "This is gonna take a whole lotta floorin'."

Steve, I'll get that registration out this week!

Oops, thanks John. If the new car will cost 78% the price of the M5 in the
UK (base costs compared), this puts my guesstimate at $56k instead - a bit
easier to swallow.

You guys are only in "A" class, and you're goin' THAT fast? Hmmm, maybe
we'll have to inspect BOTH your cars, there's gotta be a nitrous bottle or
something on board somewhere. If we have to, we can always tear down your
cars for a real inspection! :^)

Well, if Pete has sold his E30, he may have purchased an E36 replacement,
and if it is still stock, it is probably going to be in "A" class as well,
so you'll both have to be on your "heels and toes" to take first place this
time. (Notice clever tie-in to previous thread.)

Hi Scott
This is one of those things that I bet you'll always find some odd
exceptions to... but, I have three pieces of info that may help a bit.
Number one, the best method is to simply check the VIN of the car in
question. A 525i with a manual tranny and M50 motor will have the sequence
"HD53" in the VIN number. A 525i with AT tranny and M50 engine will have
"HD63" in the VIN. Second, SB # 11 02 84 (2033) lists the 525i >8/90 as
having the M20 and 9/90> as having the M50. However, on the EPC, you can
look up a US version E34 525i with a 1/90 prod. date and the M50 engine.
So, like I said, the only sure fire method is to check the VIN number.
Otherwise, you'll never get a straight answer.

No double vanos in the 525i. The E39 528i is the first 5er with that
feature...

Because it is difficult to say which you'd miss more, the luggage or the

Except in cases of physical disability, S.O.'s are equipped with
legs--with luck nice ones--and are therefore are able to propel
themselves or, if properly adorned, acquire a ride from a passing

I think the guy on eBay is stretching things to call it "the first" Z8 in
the US. Even if it is among the first to be shipped to a dealer, it will be
one of 20 or so... "One of the first" might have been a bit more
appropriate.

Besides, there are plenty of Z8s in the US. Ya just can't buy 'em (press
cars, test mules, employee demos)... =)

Try <www.alldata.com>. I believe they have several options for getting all
the TSBs, recall info, etc., etc. via CD-ROM or on-line. It costs around
$29.95 (or was it $39.95) for an actual CD-ROM for a specific car
model/series. $19.95 (or was it $39.95) for online access to the info.

Hey Scott -

You must have misunderstood me - I put the stock suspension back on. Yup,
trust me, totally stock. Nah, you don't have to inspect it, it's totally
stock. Um, yeah, I decided to paint the various pieces, but they're really
just stock items all prettied up. The paint went on kind of heavy, that's
why the sway bars look
thicker. Those aren't really coilovers - M3s built in April 96 came that
way. It was some sort of mid-year experiment...And I ate too much over the
winter, that's why the car sits lower...
