The primary advantage of this material is that it does not fatigue over time like mild steel. Many aftermarket suspension parts that are made from mild steel stop feeling fresh after 1-2 years... springs sag and sway bars lose their effectiveness. Some of the really "high end" tuners (like Stillen with their monster twin-turbo 300ZXs) insist on 4130, but the UUC SwayBarbarian is the only BMW application of this material. Personally, I have had some "big name" suspensions in mild steel suffer from the weakening and fatiguing. It creeps up on you as it is a gradual process, but even switching to a brand-new example of the same part shows the difference. The UUC parts are free of this long-term effect. - - Rob Levinson UUC Motorwerks * www.uucmotorwerks.com * 732-398-0001 - ----- Original Message ----- From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [uuc] Just got UUC swaybars > In a message dated 2/25/00 9:22:42 r* Eastern Standard Time, > [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: > > << The bars are 4130 chrome moly(other bars are mild steel) and come with > this > very trick zinc coating (silver in color) and will never chip. >> > > What is the reason for using 4130 in this application? > > Stan > ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2000 10:35:14 -0600 From: Dave Foos <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] TCKline Rollbar Procedure I'm looking for Duane's highly referenced "January 1999 Roundel article" on installing the TCKline rollbar. The Run-Flat system that Goodyear makes is not just the tires. I thought I heard this, and I checked their website to confirm it: How Goodyear Run-Flat Technology Works The Run-Flat sidewall is built to maintain its shape and driveability even afte r losing all air pressure. In fact, the tire performs so well when it's "flat," that cars must be equipped with a sensor system at each wheel to alert the driver to any loss of pressure. Without such a system, you might drive on the tire until it was damaged beyond repair. The Eagle Aquasteel Run-Flat tire for passenger cars is designed to be driven with no air pressure for up to 50 miles at 55 mph and still be fully repairable. http://www.goodyear.com/us/tires/technology/runflat.html Chaz On Fri, Feb 25, 2000 at 11:03:06AM -0600, Michael Weishaar wrote: > Is it just me, or does anyone else find runflat tires stupid? > Sure, you can run for them for 50 miles (or whatever) when they are > flat, but then what? They sell them based on a paranoia of having a flat while driving thru a ghetto on a rainy night. Not a likely occurance for most people. There are people whose capabilites and situation make this a good tire choice. (Individuals of either gender who for whatever reason would never be able to change a tire, and who find themselves frequently a fair distance from civilization or who just want the security) Most of those people won't ever buy a tire like this because it is out of their price range or they are not the target market and may not even know it exists. John is far too modest. His turn style worked very well...pitch the car sideways into the turn, (pro rally style), then when aligned with the exit, mash the throttle and head off in the new direction. (Sheesh John, now you have me talking in parenthesis also.) (What's up with that.) The crowd loved it and they would cheer at each corner. (Although John probably couldn't hear it). It was great fun to watch and he executed the style very well. As John mentioned, it is hard on the tires however. No, I will not have a video camera bouncing around this time, but I will have my laptop computer with a G-Cube doing data aquisition. The friction circle it generates is pretty useful showing where there is more to be had from the car. I received your web site posted registration John. Oh yes, don't forget to put a good layer of Armour-All on your tires (especially the tread area) the night before the AutoX, It will make the rubber more complient. (Heh heh heh). Oops...I was thinking of the self-sealing goop that are used sometimes, but not necessary with the ones that have the stiff sidewall and maintain it's shape. Yup, you either have to have a tire pressure monitoring device or do what BMW does (I think). They calculate the tire pressure from the deformation of the tire, no? Something like if it takes x rotations to go y feet, then they can figure out the tire pressure. Or maybe I'm just imagining things like the electrostatic glass that was supposed to come on the M5 to turn clear windows to black....
