I met Jim Ochi briefly when i made a surprise trip up to a two-day SFR SCCA event at the Oakland Coliseum over a year ago. I remember him being fast for running on street tires :-) I'd never been to an San Francisco region event before and was surprised that their course was so short (45 second range), but it was a very fun course nonetheless. My GTi sure liked it :-) I've never been on a 34 second course before, that must be intense ! BMW says: The new Z8 comes standard with run-flat technology tires in a Run-Flat Combination (RFC) system incorporating self-supporting tires, pressure monitoring and extended hump (EH) rims. The claimed benefit is a three hundred mile range at reduced speed (80 km/h) following a complete loss of air from any tire. The EH wheels will accept conventional tires and run-flat winter tread tires are available. The tires are made up of reinforced side walls with additional inserts and rubber compounds resistant to temperature. The pressure warning (TPW) system uses the same rotation sensors as the ABS system. When tire pressure drops by at least 30%, the tire rolling radius and circumference changes, resulting in a change in tire speed versus the other inflated tires. The ABS compares this change versus average wheel speed and at speeds above 15km/h the TPW will deliver both an audible and visual warning to the driver within 1-3 minutes. The tires, in BMW fashion supplied by various manufacturers, are 245/45R18W front, and 275/40R18W rear.
