The stealer I bought mine from told me one of the reasons it was sitting on the lot as long as it was is that no one in Atlanta wanted a stick. Probably all BS of course, but made a good story. If I got a wild hair and decided to start looking for an E30 M3, what would be a median price for one that runs, maybe has the normal problems an 8+ year old car would have, but was NOT al tricked out for track use? I had a '84 533i until an accident totaled it last year, and we replaced it with our current '85 535i. The cars are VERY similar: different size engine, but horsepower virtually identical, 535i supposedly has a little more torque. The '85 has ABS, the '84 not. Some like the non-ABS, I think I like having it as my wife drives the car a lot. My '85 doesn't have some of the bells and whistles others have: no power seats, for example. I like things simple, though, so no extra things to break down is fine with me. I'd purchase the one that looks overall in the best shape. One thing to keep in mind: I've had three E28 cars, a '80 528i was my first. Each one needed a new/rebuilt driveshaft at between 150k and 180k. You might check as to whether either of these cars have had that done. I'm getting ready to do my 535i soon, and we've got 182k on it. Good luck with your choice. You'll enjoy either. Those fit a 5.25 speaker nicely and drop right in. forget the 4T- I tried Polk, Pioneer, and Kicker, and not a one fit correctly (ie sealed air space between front/rear of speaker) I bought them used including some lovely MBQuarts from someone off bimmer.org and the improvement was phenomenal. I don't know what the hell BMW was thinking with those stupid 4Ts- they went down in size from the rear 5.25s of the E30 premium audio system, which some people on this digest knock but I actually enjoyed. (the key was to replace the stock head unit *and* amp with an aftermarket unit. those were the warmest, richest stock speakers I have ever heard.) MBQuart also makes a plate that drops into the existing hole (from the top) and fits a 5.25" speaker and a tweeter. Couldn't find anyone local that could order it, though. you could try and get the enclosures from the dealer- I have no idea how much they run, though. Karl, I think that if the 535 is in better condition the miles aren't so important. I recently purchased an 85 535i (with 171,000) from the second owner, it was a California car and was in pristine condition except for a reverse ding on the hood where some monkey closed the hood on their tool (not THAT tool) or something. It needed some minor things that the previous owner had let go, but all were minor. The PO sold it because after moving to snow country he didn't like the performance in the snow (I called him, he traded it in on a Subaru!) Definitely look at both, but if the car was cared for get the one you like more and don't let the mileage scare you. BTW, sorry to hear about your 7, what a drag, but at least it was relatively minor and you walked away (read=the cement truck didn't hit YOU).
