Upon further description from him, he stated that it had 15" steel wheels w/new snows on it, a hole in the rear muffler, that it was red, drove-out good, and that it was in the possession of a guy trying to sell it for a charitable organization, to which the car had been donated. I ask him "ARE YOU NUTS? We're talking a 1-9-8-8 5-3-5-i-s here, WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM?" Then he tells me that the guy told him $2000 would buy the car! After berating him endlessly, and causing him to not be able to sleep that night, he returned the following morning, and left a deposit on the car, agreeing to purchase it for $2000. His big hang-up was that he'd have to put it on a credit card. Duhhhh...! One hour later, he was later told, another foot-dragger approached the seller, indicating that he wanted to buy the car, at which time he learned that it had indeed, been sold (to my friend). He was devastated, stating "I didn't think you were going to SELL it!" My apprehensive, afraid-to-pull-the-trigger buddy now has been calling me 2 to 3 times a day to gloat about his purchase... "The car has NO rust!" "I met the ORIGINAL owner, and got all the records, and summer wheels from him!" "Mark, this car drives out SO tight... Acccording to the records, the original owner has replaced just about EVERYTHING!" yada, yada, yada.... "I owe you dinner at least!" Personally, I was thinking more along the lines of him offering me an evening with his gorgeous wife, as a more fitting compensation! <G> Moral of the story: "He who drags feet wears out SOUL!" I put a set in 225/50/16 on my wife's Probe GT and liked them so much that I put a set on my iX. I was glad to hear the the previous owner just put a set on the M3 I just bought. They wear great, can do dual duty at the track (light track or rain) and have good handling characteristics. There are certainly better tires out there but I'd like to see one that performs as well as the 8k's and is as good of a bargain. As for Firestone in general, my experience is that they just plain suck. They wear terribly and I didn't think they performed all that well, especially in anything other than dry road. YMMV. Patrick: I realize lengthening the rod a bit is a second order type improvement, but since I am having rods and pistons made in any case, then the only cost is a little pencil pushing to yield a better design. So why not at least look at it right? Jack ole pal remember though that the SZ50 is that tire that was/is? made on the same line as the S02, not sure what that means but it sounds impressive doesn't it? Anyone know? Same compound different tread pattern perhaps? My only experience with the SZ50 was a ride with an SCCA club racer in his very fast very prepared Firechicken in a very wet Bremerton track. That car was one of the fastest I've ever ridden in and he really liked the SZ50's. I zonked out when choosing tires and chose some other wet tire. Although my 325is is a 1990 model, it is technically an '80's car as it was built in 1989 (got to love that model year vs. manufactured year dichotomy--proof that time travel *does* exist). The only "modern" conveniences it has are the electric windows/doorlocks/mirrors/antenna, OBC, ABS and SRS. I could do without the SRS as it makes the steering wheel really clunky, but it does serve a purpose. The rest of the car is simple and straightforward. You can actually see the spark plug wires and the intake runners--nothing is covered up by plastic/carbon fiber/aluminum/etc. Replacing the rotors and pads on all four wheels is a 3-hour job at most that can be done in the garage. Timing belt changes, oil changes, valve adjustments, etc. are all things I can do without needing a workbench full of specialized tools or an advanced degree in engineering. Most importantly, I *understand* how everything works on this car. We also own a '94 Toyota Corolla, and I wouldn't try to work on it to save my life--there are too many things that inspire the question, "What is that doo-hickey for?" If I want to increase performance in my 325, I can buy a chip, replace the differential, slap in a new camshaft, or a myriad of other things without having to take my car to a specialized shop and have insanely large amounts of cash removed from my wallet. My general observation is this: we are currently standing in the biggest hot rod time of all. It's gotten to the point where 200bhp is common and even low engine output. (And that's real horsepower, not the crazy '60s numbers.) Heck, I'm starting to be embarassed by having only 240 horses in the M3. Tauruses, Accords, Camrys - they all have V6s that run those family cars to 60 in the same or faster times than an old GTO. Forget about handling comparisons - newer cars have gotten overall stiffer suspensions and much better brakes (4 wheel discs and ABS are incredibly prevalent. My '97 M3 is great. I bet the new M3 will be better. There may be reasons why I may prefer driving my E36 for some subjective reasons - just like people like their E30s. Overall, I bet it will be a better car. I'm not a fan of too much electronics, and I like to tinker, but when you've got half the GM car line doing 0-60 in less than 8.5 seconds, we must be getting somewhere.
