According to the owner's manual, the timer serves as either a stopwatch or a timer to turn on the A/C fan to purge hot air from the car. I can get the fan timer to work fine but I can't get the stopwatch function to work. All it does is ask for on times. What is the trick for the stopwatch function? It was not a good experience. It came flying off on the third corner and then I had to contend with attempting to catch it as it was tossing about the cockpit. The good part was that it was a left hand turn so the assembly was thrown to the passenger side instead of into my face. I finally pinned it down about two thirds of the way around the course, and by that point my time for that run was really in the crapper. To make matters even worse, when I got back to the paddock, I noticed that in flailing around it tore the leather covering on passenger side arm rest. I wouldn't recommend the windshield mount for high G-force situations. Why? The car is OBD I and that makes it a whole lot easier to tune with upgrades than the OBD II cars which came along in 1996. Also, those silly staggered wheel sizes are not an issue in that year like they are on later edition M3's.. '95 M3's had a very long production run...about 18 months total. If you target the '95's, aim for ones with build dates of Sept 1995 through December 1995. They have the improved valvetrain fixes, transmission bushings, and are slightly stiffer sprung than the earlier ones. Every BMW built after Jan 1995 also has the Driveaway Protection System. There are really no reliablity issues on any of the years. All are going to need the new water pumps sooner or later (mine is already done) and all will need upper rear shock pads sooner than many cars, and that's it. Sedan was introduced in 97 & 98, three spoke motorsport wheel in 99. Newer cars also has traction control. Automatic was available from 95 on I believe. 99 is the last year, of which automatic was not available. In some years, automatic was only available in Sedans (4dr). Some early 95s came with plastic radiator impellers, & soft valve retainers, and so on and so on... If you (or rather your brother) plan on modifying the engine, then the 95 is probably a better choice. Given that it has OBD 1. The 96+ will be quicker off the line because of more torque & shorter rear diff. LTW (light weight) models are only available in 1995, they're similar to 95 garden variety M3s except that they've got aluminum doors, special oil pan, front splitter & rear wing (should be used together), staggered wheels (?) with same sized tire, no AC, no Sun rf, cloth seats, 3.23 rear diff, and I'm not sure if they came with oil coolers.
