I guess we are all victims of "WINGS on DISCOVERY" channel..... am I right
or am I right. C'mon, you know it, you'll be channel surfin' "ooph, an F-14

realize you just went into the twilight zone on "WINGS".

Check the crank reference and position sensors. If the ECU does not see
a reference signal, it will not know when to initiate the timing
sequence. Without the position sensor, it won't know the engine is
running.

That was a great show. My only real complaint was that when he really started getting

music in themselves!

When you match the acoustic impedance at the surface of an object with
water, that object becomes globally "invisible", essentially
indistinguishable from empty water, from any angle. So you not only
eliminate echoes and other reflected noise, you also eliminate radiated
noise as well. Ultimate stealth.

Any incoming sonar pulse would get transmitted out the other side, just as
empty water would. It is a fairly trivial consequence of the Helmholtz
Integral formulation for far-field radiated/reflected noise. Just replace
the local P an V terms in front of the Green's functions for the surface
integral with the implied corresponding term for impedance match to water.
It is then clear (ha ha).

If this were possible with radar or visible light, an M3 coated with
something matching EM impedance of air, would not just not reflect any EM
energy at all, it would be as if it weren't there. Completely invisible.
In contrast to current radar stealth which just provides a
distorted/diminished radar signature. My brain freezes up and falls out of
my ear when I think how hard this would be to do.

>2. Has anyone reversed the techniques to analyze the operation signatures of
>machines to determine when they are about to fail and and by processing out
>elements, what component(s).

Yes, there is a lot of fault monitoring work going on now. Some of it
successful, some not so. Basic idea is to create and store a mathematical
model (system identification) of the machine while running properly under
all conditions. Then monitor this model vs. sensed signatures in real time
and if parameters go out of spec, flag an error condition. This is not
really rocket science. This is why the check engine light pops up on our
cars from time to time.

Where it is getting sophisticated is for example inside a jet engine.
People are now looking at placing eddy current sensors inside the turbine
blades and monitoring resonant frequencies/amplitudes and blade
deformation. There is a well known vibration signature of impending blade
failure which if sensed soon enough, can save an engine from blowing up.
Problem is they can only see it now in the lab, not inside a real engine.

There are many expensive routine maintenance procedures in complicated
machinery which could be eliminated if some type of specific, intelligent
fault monitoring could be developed. This jet engine project is or was a
joint DOD effort with Pratt & Whitney/Bell Labs (now Lucent). I was a
consultant on this program very early on, but we never could agree on
payment. Wish I'd stayed longer, it is very interesting work.

Imagine strain gauges or other sensors which told you if a bearing was
about to go, or a critical strut about to fail. Or a key stabilizer screw
on the tail section of an MD-80 was soon to be toast. The application
areas are huge, it's about making intelligent, self-monitoring machines
which tell you, hey I'm about to fail here! Fix me!

You guys are going about it all wrong. You must remove the
emblem from the INSIDE out. I recommend purchasing a NOS
system, disable every safety feature, hot wire the in tank heater,
go get the family some dinner and KA-BOOM. You may find the
emblem embedded in you neighbor, oh excuse me, ex-neighbors
head across the street. Work great for that Honda/Toyota fool.

Ummm, so brakes on an E34 are really quite simple in comparison then I
bet.

If you're industrious, you can get a replacement lock cylinder kit
from a dealer for this car. (~$50) It comes in lots of pieces with
instructions in German, and you assemble it to match the old cylinder.
As you tear the old cylinder apart, you keep track of the sequence of
the thingies that the key mates to. Each thingy has a number (in
German) stamped on it. With that sequence of numbers, you should be
able to get a key cut to perfection. (*should*, never tried!)
Chances are good that you'll need a new cylinder for the driver's
door eventually anyway, once it stops working well.

This was an interesting post from the Ferrari list this morning that I
forwarded to the UUC list...not my words. I know very little about planes.
The rest of the F-digests today were filled with stupid, non-technical
discussion....like, which is the best Ferrari color? SD

The Fod/GM staple sedans here have upwards of 200 bhp, but then they do use
oversized, underachieving 6-pots with ancient design roots. Compared to
previous driving experiences, when the adversary usually drove a 70 hp
Peugeot diesel, it makes getting ahead in traffic much more difficult. Ford
and GM's humble family boxes have better low-speed pick-up than a 528i (mind
you that's all they're better at).

I enjoy reading the opinions on older cars, I really do. The engineering
integrity of older cars is deeper than many take for granted; moreover, the
showroom gloss of '90s and '00 cars is so prevalent that basic design values
seem to be taking second place. You think M5 brakes are poor? Ford's latest
Falcon, introduced in 1998, has to have a speed limiter at 110 mph because
the engineers couldn't design a propshaft that doesn't go into destructive
harmonic oscillation above that speed. Now *that's* a shortcoming. They do
come with sat-nav, though.
