Subject: [uuc] <e28> 528e that hates me (long)

Hey all,

Just thought I'd share with you my trouble. I recently baught an '86 528e
from my father. He had to car (as 3rd owner) and reports that he's never had
any major problems with it. The lucky bastard! I got it about a month and a
half ago, and I'm convinced the car hates me. I just wanted to share my
stories with you all.

First day I drove the car, I noticed an alternator whine through the
stereo system. I brought it to my dad's attention, and he said it wasn't
there before. Took it to his mechanic, who wanted me to leave the car there
for the morning, and pay him to add a filter to mask the problem. I didn't
want to waste a morning, and money to hide a problem, I wanted it fixed. So
the alternator still whines at me when I listen to the radio.

Next problem I had was a bad oil pressure sending unit. I was visiting a
friend while back home to pick up the car, and thought it would be a good
excuse to take the car on the freeways for a little trip before I made the
BIG trip to my current home in southern Ca. (My parents live in Bay Area Ca)
A good 50-60 miles away from my folks home, the oil pressure idiot light
comes on at me. OH CRAP!!! Luckily I was at my friends house when I noticed
it. Shut the car down, and check the oil, it was there, and plenty of it, but
that dosn't mean squat. So I called my dad, we tried a few things, and found
that the light was coming on intermittently. Checked under the car, and found
that the switch was leaking a little oil. The light went off long enough to
drive to my folks. . . went to the local dealer, and baught a replacement
switch. Problem solved.

Drove the car down south a few days later. . . no problems. The next day
I got in the car, and noticed that the OBC was all wierd. Called my dad (yet
again!) did some checking around and discovered a blown fuse. Replaced it,
and then had to reset the OBC. (It was reading in German. . . THAT was wierd,
I thought my car had REALLY gone south)

A few weeks go by, my girlfriend and I are out for the day. She made a
NASTY referance towords the car. Something about how a car is a car, and the
bimmer was no better at getting from one place to another as my old '79
Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. (quicky on the T.A. I bought it for $900, good
car, good engine, good tranny. . . but ugly as hell. No interior at all. . .
candy apple primer for paint. . . and smokes hot oil from under the hood all
the time. A FAR cry from my 528e) Outraged, I forced her to appologise to the
car immediately right then and there in the middle of the parking lot. It
took a little convincing (I think she felt stupid for having to talk to a
car, let alone apologise to it) but she did it. Ten minutes later, we're
driving down the road, and all of the sudden the drivers side sun visor loses
all friction required to keep it in any position other than hanging right in
my face. <SIGH> Imagine what could have happend had I not made her
apologise!!! Went to the local drug store, and baught a pakage of self
adhesive velcro, and stuck that sucker where it belongs.

Which brings me to my final (so far) mishap. . . The sun visor incedent
was about 2 weeks ago. No problems since then. . . until two nights ago, when
I got off of work and tried to start the car. It started then died. Same on
the second attempt. nothing on the third. . . just cranks. So I called my dad
again. . . by now he's pretty pissed at me, saying this is not his car, or
his problem anymore. In his defense he's right. . . but while I'm good with
diesil engines, unleaded fuel engines, (not to mention the electrical
nightmare under a BMW's hood) are a little overwhelming to me. So we played
around with it for a bit. . . got it to start for about 30 seconds or so,
then it died once more. At this point it was 11:30pm and my dad (who I had
woken up) was sick to begin with, so I let him go. I sat there in the car
(almost in tears) trying to decide what to do with it.

I was close enough that I could have walked home if I had too, but no
parking is allowed at the lot during 2-5am. So I was risking a ticket if I lef
t it. likewise, I didn't want to spend $150 to have a truck come and tow my
beloved bimmer. So I got out and played around a little more, and eventually
got it started. This time though I gave it not the chance to die, and fed it
gas at 2K rpm for about 20 secs. Backed off to 1K for another 20 secs. Then
got off it completely and sat there watching the tach for signs of dying.
After about 3-4 minutes the idle kicked down to low and with no further signs
of misfortune, I drove it home. Got it here, shut it down, and tried to start
it again. It started and died. And then nothing after that.

So I went to my books. . . I have the factory manual, the Bently, and the
Chiltens curtousy of my father. As well as tons of other documentation on the
car that he has collected over the years. Went through most of it. And became
TOTALLY overwhelmed. There is so many things that could be wrong with the
thing. Shoot. . . if a diesil doesn't want to start check the battery, if
that's good check the fuel, if that's good, then it's the glow plugs, and if
those are good then it's the glow plug sending unit. PERIOD! But this. . .
this is all way out of my league. Heck I don't even have a multimeter.

To put an end to all this. . . after checking a number of things, plugs,
rotor, distributer, fuses, some relays, some sending units. . . I was just
about to give up. Went to my local BMW dealership to try and bend the ear of
one of the mechanics for a few minutes, but had to talk to a stupid paper
pushing bimbo who sounded like she had no clue what I was talking about.
Wouldn't let me talk to a mech, but was more than happy to tell me that I
needed a new $300 fuel pump. My father and I had ruled this out thinking that
if the fuel pump WAS bad, then after the numerous attemps to start the car
without success, the pressure in the fuel lines would have bled off. However,
I decided to go home and test the pumps anyway. easy enough to do if I can
find someone to help my with cranking the engine.

But while I was there, I thought to buy a new main relay, and a new fuel
relay. About $20 a piece. Even though I had checked those out with some
spares my father had given me, all the spares looked old, and I really had no
way of telling if they were any good at all. And heck, if all else fails then
at least I'll have two new relays for future use, and I'll know they're good.
As it turns out when I got home and poped in the new fuel relay, the car
started right up. I took it back out, and put in the old one just to check,
and it started and died. To the old one back out, replaced it with the new
one, and voila. . . once again I'm the envy of my friends with a GREAT BMW to
drive around in.

If this is not evidence that these cars have a distinctive personallity.
. . and KNOW who is driving them, and when they got dumped to the son to be
replaced by a brand spanking NEW BMW. . . I don't know what is! So now I just
want to know. . . how much longer before she accepts me as her new owner and
stops giving me these fits!?! Sorry this is so long, but I just thought I'd
share with you all my pains and frustrations with my new car. Don't get me
wrong, I love this car to death. . . it's a heck of a lot better than my T.A.
but geese. . . you'd think she'd give me a break once in a while.

Subject: [uuc] <E28> <E23> Picture of 1983 745i Stock BBS Style Rims/Bolt up to e-28?

Greetings,

I am looking for a picture of these rims, someone has a set for sale,
but can't get me a picture of them. Can anyone help me out by sending
or directing me to a photo of the stock rims? I looked on the web but
couldn't find them. Also, will these bolt up to an 85 535i with no
problems? What would be a fair price for these, they are TRX, but the
PO of my car replaced the TRX's right before selling it so they are
almost new. I thought it would be a good way to change out the rather
bland stock rims until the tires on there wear out and I can just get a
new set of wheels/tires from Tire Rack or something.

Thanks to everyone who has been answering my questions lately. I look
forward to being able to answer some in the future.

Thanks again,

Darrel

The reserve BETTER not be much higher than $8500.... Wheels(?) aside, that is a decent
price range for a 1990 car, rust-free, probably not tracked, and possibly
well-serviced. I wouldn't be afraid of it, if only I could find some dolt to relieve
me of those AWFUL wheels. 170K non-enthusiast driven miles does open the door to the
likelihood that this car has been crunched at least once at some point. I'd have to
see it in person.

Oh, I don't know...the seller says this beauty is "...NOT worn out..." and

than a couple rolls of Brawny to suck up all that Armor-All on the tires?
Sheesh.

Yeah, it registers as a 528e, but didn't the conversion costs outweigh the
saving in insurance and the like for at least the next 10 years?!

would receive it 5-6 business days. Called today to
find out that it's back-ordered. They didn't even

I'd like to locate a set with a shrink tube coating.
Anyone buy a set from a reputable merchant who is not

Any info appreciated

The E30 M3 steering rack isn't a bolt on to other Non-M E30's. E36 M3 is a
