The few hundred miles goes along the lines a BMW tech I know who is working at BMWNA told me. I thought the 3K breakin was a little excessive. But what the hell do I know? I put in gas, check the oil and drive. I believe the tranny was defective from the factory. For 2 years I had a slight problem with 2nd gear. Sometimes it would pop out in very wet weather. I never really cared to have it fixed because it happened so infrequently. It got worse this winter in the cold. I'd pop out of 2nd until I drove a few miles. This only happened when the temp was in the teens. I replaced the gearbox and diff fluid with Red Line last year at the same time so I don't know which effected the performance I was getting. But I could swear that I could hit redline faster with Red Line fluids. Maybe it was the diff fluid, maybe it's my imagination. I also felt that shifting was smoother, regardless of the fact the 2nd gear was a problem. Now the fact that I don't need to baby the tranny for 3000 miles has me feeling better. My experience - and that of others, from what I've read - is that the OE shocks go "off" and lose their edge after 15-30,000 miles, depending on how hard the car is driven. After that, they are still useable for several tens of thousands of miles, with little apparent further degradation. As with most enthusiasts, I would tend to replace them earlier rather than later. Last year I was looking at changing the 51,000 mile-old shocks in my '95 318is, and when I found out what they would cost, I moved to Sydney in disgust. The OE shocks on my (UK) car were made by Sachs/Boge. If you retain the stock springs, the OE items are probably the safe option as they are tuned to the rest of the suspension, especially if you have retained the stock wheels. Change the wheels/tyres (and therefore unsprung weight), and you might want to consider a wholesale refit with new springs as well. Done properly, the ride quality shouldn't deteriorate unacceptably. I'm sure I could fix it myself, but I just don't have the time for a project like that right now. Soooo, now I'm shopping. I need a 5 or 7 series. By choice, I will limit the cost to what I can expect from the insurance company - plus a couple grand if I _really_ need to. There's an '83 733i 5-speed here in town.
