Luckily Sunday is the day of the auto report programs. Today was a good day. Firstly we had the road test of the BMW M5 (Motorsport 5 Series). This M5 was a five litre V8 with 400HP. It does 0-100Klms/hr (0-60mph) in 5.3 seconds. The M5 is fitted with a normal and sport driving software schedule selectable by the driver. It is also fitted with the Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP), also selectable by the driver. Cost of the M5 is 140,000DM or $US75,000. Next week they road test a road going 3 Series BMW with 400HP. Manufactured by an aftermarket BMW company. The next report of interest was about the Audi TT. Now known as the Lawyers Sports Car. It is keeping a lot of lawyers in business taking legal action against Audi. There are an average of 50 accidents a month in Germany with the Audi TT, most of them in loss of control on the autobahn whilst braking or taking evasive action. They did a road test of the Audi TT versus the Porsche Boxster. The Audi TT was not very good. In fact it is very unstable and it is easy to lose control, doinmg things like braking and changing lanes at the same time . They then rolled out the new Audi TT with upgraded suspension, a new rear spoiler and the Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP) installed. This Audi TT performed quite well but was still outperfomed by the Porsche Boxster. With the ESP turned off the new Audi TT is not much better in the handling department than the old one. The team who did the test on the old Audi TT were not permitted to drive the new one. Audi told the test team that the Audi TT is a sports car and should not be expected to do what non sports cars do. There was no further explanation on what they meant by this statement. For those who do not believe the data about the Audi TT, I have taped the show which shows the handling tests. The look on the test drivers face tells the story. the outside shots are just plain scary. The test team often made mention of the handling qualities of the 911 and the Boxster and they were surprised by the Audi TT and its lack of handling qualities. if you are thinking of purchasing an Audi TT, I would wait for the new one and leave the ESP turned on at all times. Now to the star of the day the Porsche 911 (996) Turbo. Officially known as the fastest production auto built in Germany. The new turbo is the 5th Turbo from Porsche. It is 6 cm wider than the 993TT. It gets from 0-100 Klms/hr (0-60mph) in 4.2 seconds. Top speed road tested at 305Klms/Hr. With the 420HP 3.6L watercooled turbo charged engine you get the newest version of the Porsche Stability Management (PSM) to control the AWD and handling. There is a whole 100litres of luggage space in the trunk. You can drive one off the showroom floor in Germany in May this year for just 235,000DM or $US117,500. the Turbo tested was Guards red and looked the part. Pity I do not have the money. Tit Bits, Maserati now run and totally controlled by Ferrari management, have released two new models. A Coupe the Maserati 3200GT and a 4 door tourer (cannot spell the name). They intend to build 1900 3200GT Coupes a year. You can purchase one from the factory in Modena Italy for a cool 150,000DM or $US75,000. Ferrari shut the Maserati factory for six months and completely rebuilt and renovated the place. All the new Maseratis are still basically hand built in specialist jigs. Very similar to Ferrari manufacturing techniques. The new Ferrari 360 Spider is undergoing road testing. Two models have been filmed on the roads, a red one and a yellow one. Disguised but clearly a Ferrari Spider with full electric roof. The new Renault Koleos SUV should be released in March. this SUV was developed from a concept design released last year. The new 911 (996) Cabriolet Turbo has been photographed on the road. Disguised again but clearly a Porsche Turbo Cab. No other details are available. Finally. There has been much talk in recent times about the Porsche SUV. Here in Europe there has been basically nothing in the motoring press, electronic or written. It is though the Porsche SUV does not exist. It is not even mentioned in official Porsche releases here, that I have read. I have read more on this list than in the European press. I think this may tell us that this SUV is clearly going to be marketed in the USA and not in Europe. Similar to the Mercedes and BMW SUVs. However they do get some press here but not much. saw a road test on the BMW X5 last week. Nothing special and expensive. Many other autos were shown as well but I think this is enough for now. When that car was new I'd bet the ride was exactly what you're looking for today. To get back to that you'd need to replace the springs, shocks, and many of the bushings and rod ends around the car. Since some of the bushings you'd need to replace are a lot of trouble and actually still serviceable as they sit you probably could get by with a new set of stock springs and maybe some Bilstein shocks (not sport). Of course you should replace any rod ends that have play in them and bushings that are badly worn. Can you do this for $500? Probably not. I have been popping out of gear very intermittently since Mile 3, 2 years ago. I sometimes popped out of 2nd when it was very wet outside. I know people have told me that it can't be weather related, but it seemed to be. This past winter I started popping out of 2nd when the temp was in the teens. Once I drove a few miles it was OK. My dealer replaced the gearbox under warranty at ~47000K miles. I've had Red Line D4 ATF in it for the past 10K-15K miles. I know people that also have gearbox popping out of gear problems using stock gearbox fluid so I don't think fluid is an issue. ...steven 1998 E36/5 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Feb 2000 09:04:52 -0500 From: "Michael Wendell" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: re: [uuc] Turn-in technique matt yip spewed forth... > Turn 1 @ Slummit Point is a prime example for turn-in > under acceleration. That lever probably made it worse, I know it did in my car and I also have all new parts. I KNOW I have worn synchros though, but the shorter shifts ARE nice.
