Any order that the dealer places that deviates from the standard production order deck from BMW NA requires approval for the deviation from BMW NA which may or may not require a telex to/from Germany and may or may not come with a firm price quote. The dealer, though, must sign a form stating they will take the car no matter what, regardless of customer waffling or not. Sometimes a paint color will cost, sometimes it won't. Depends on the model as much as anything. On 5s and 7s if it is simply a Euro color available in the same factory it won't cost extra. If it requires special handling such as purging the paint guns and getting the paint from outside, the $1500 is pretty standard. This does not explain why standard 3 series colors can't be done on other 3 series models in the same plant for no cost. My customer paid $1200 or so to get calypso red on a '95 M3. They wanted an additional $800 PER SEAT to make the seats in beige and would ONLY do the FRONT seats, not the backs!! They would still be black. For $1200 he could get in in Calypso, which he did., $1600 would buy two front seats in beige with the backs and all door panels in black, and another $1500 would have gotten him the forged rims. At that time the rims only cost $500 each as parts (actually $50 LESS than the standard 20 spoke cast wheels) and he got to keep the 5 that came with the car. There effectively is only limited individual order availability for the US. It is more a problem with BMW NA than with your dealers. Is there any other services I should look at for this purpose? If so, who should I use? 4. What is the required documentation I need to secure from the seller to import and register the car in the US? 5. Is there any other issues/questions I should be thinking of prior to purchase since I can't actually see the vehcile? Piece of mind questions: 1. I currently own a '90 E34/535i & LOVE IT! Is the E34 M5 fairly reliable? Is there any caveats I should be aware of for a European '89 E34 M5? 2. What is the estimated yearly cost to maintain or premium above & beyond a 535 like I have? 3. Are there any draw backs to owning a European M5 (obtaining parts, routine servicing, etc) in the USA? As crazy as this seems, I can't pass up this dream --- an E34 M5 for $9800 (US) with about 153 KM (about 95 K miles if I do my conversion right)!
