I've gotten some condolences and well wishes from nice digesters on my work situation. I feel I should clarify. Our family situation is more of a very early retirement (we're both 40) than a nerve wracking unemployment deal. A really fast sedan. He likes my 1999 540i, but he's got a lot of experience building and driving much faster cars-- he used to have a 911 he'd pushed up to something north of 600 HP-- so he wants something faster and lighter than the 540 or even the M5. He's spent some time reviewing his options, and at the moment he's leaning toward a Mercedes E430 with substantial engine and suspension work. He believes there are more options for pushing the Mercedes engine up into the 500-HP range-- or even higher-- and he points out the E430 starts out about 300 lbs lighter and has more interior room. He's prepared to spend a good deal of money and time on this project, and I'm pretty confident he'll get good results no matter what he starts with-- he's a very serious and competent fellow. Nevertheless, I'd rather have him start with a BMW, if only because I may be able to ride his coattails to improve my own car. So the basic question is, what options are out there for greatly improving the power and handling of a 5-series sedan? He and I have both looked at the packages offered by Alpina, Hartge, RD Sport, Schnitzer, and even Hennessey Motorsports, but none of these guys seem to have taken the 5-series all that far. Please e-mail me. > There's a triangular piece that's attached to the glass - the arm on the mirror goes over this triangular piece. So, all you have to do is grab the arm, and rotate it around the mount - it will come right off in about 60 degrees or so. Installation is the reverse. I have been adding oil and the engine seems a bit rough. I checked the DME codes and I got 1286, I looked up the code and it claims to be a fault in one of the knock sensors. I reset all the service indicators is that sopossed to clear the codes. because I am still getting that code. Any ideas on what might be causing the knock sensors to register a fault. Immediately after clearing the codes I statred the engine and the code was still there. With the price of gaz now I have been putting regular gas. Could this be the cause? Isn't the computer soposed to be able to compensate for that with out registering a fault? Could this be signs of an engine that is in need of some serious attention? Any insight would be welcomed. Today, I checked the oil in our M42 318is, like I normally do, and I found something odd. There was a little bit of this goo on the dip stick, that looks and smells (I didn't taste it) like white lithium grease. The oil in it is 2000 miles old Castrol regular (I went back to dinosaur juice because it was cheaper), but for the last 2 years, it had full synth. A bud of mine suggested that it was coolant chemically freaking out, and coagulating in the oil. That means blasted gasket, or cracked/warped head. We went through the TCPG fiasco 5 years ago, but I'm not sure what it is this time. I haven't had time to look as yet (it's raining, and my driveway is all mud). When my Impulse took a crap on me, and the coolant got into the oil (along with the gas that was flowing past the #2 piston), I never found this white goo. Any ideas? BTW, I drove it for the first time in weeks today, and the power doesn't seem to be there as much lately, but that could be the crappy gas (my bro got the same gas, and has the same trouble). Just twist the mirror 90 degrees where it connects to the windshield (wind screen if you're not in the colonies). You can turn it either way, and you'll be glad you did. Until I can reach Bilstein on Monday to ask a few questions, I thought I'd post 'em here ... My understanding is that Bilsteins have a lifetime warranty, but is that just for replacement parts? The one that seems to have failed is the OE unit, as far as I can tell. Also -- I've read of Bilstein's rebuild program, but I'm wondering what the cost savings might be over purchasing a new replacement unit (i.e. Eurasian's got HDs in their 'Roundel' ad for $94F/$82R). I'm working on the assumption that I'll be replacing with Bilstein HDs, as the springs are also OE.
