In case you folks had some cash to spend. The 320i DTC car comes available
from BMW M, in kit form, and can be had for around $100K. I even bey Mitch
Herman can arrange for one.
Some fellow Bimwads and I were in Munich last year and saw the DTC car at
the ultra hard to get into BMW HQ sorage facility. It was awesome, sounded
like it was a little on heavy side, but heck, it ain't no E30 M3 :^)

This is what i experienced when i was using a 22mm RD front swaybar
and a 14.5mm M3 rear bar with M3 springs on my 89 325is. The larger
swaybars made little if any reduction in body roll, but the slightly stiffer
M3 springs made a noticeable difference in the body roll dept. The
larger front swaybar will help keep your contact patches a little flatter
on the pavement, and the larger rear bar will dial out some if not all
of the understeer and offset the increase in front bar diameter.

The M3 springs will help further as the rears are stiffer in relation to
the fronts than the stock springs were on whatever kind of E30 you
have (325? 318? e, i, o, or u?). The car should be pretty neutral with
your setup, and with the right techniques you can get the car to turn in
just fine although you'll still have a LOT of body roll with those M3 springs.
When i saw pics of my car on the autocross course with virtually the same
setup as you i was shocked at the excessive body leaning ! While i think
this is how the car should have come from the factory in the first place,
i soon grew to dislike the soft ride and body roll and went to H&R Sports
instead and my body roll decreased quite a bit, just from the increased
spring rate alone. That was nice for a while but now i have the Ground
Control adjustable spring kit with much much stiffer spring rates and it
rocks ! I think you'll find the stock M3 springs woefully inadequate on
a track or autocross course, especially with R-compound tires. I'll
betcha you won't be keeping those springs in there for long..... :-)

I think the problem with the rear body tabs breaking off is more from
using a large rear swaybar with springs that are too soft. This causes
the rear bar to twist quite a bit and those weak little tabs can't survive
the twisting. With stiff enough springs the load is taken off the swaybar
and thus the tabs. I don't know if the stock E30 M3s have a problem
with breaking the rear tabs or not, but since you're basically mimicking
the stock M3 setup it might be a good idea to take a survey among M3
owners and see if their stock-suspended M3s break these tabs or not.
My mind's eye tells me that you shouldn't have a problem with your bars.
FWIW i've only heard of it happening with big aftermarket rear swaybars,
not the factory 14.5mm rear bar. I inspect my tabs from time to time
and so far they've survived my autocrossing onslaughts, and now that
i have very stiff springs i'm sure they won't be a problem. I still have the
14.5mm rear and 22mm RD front swaybar despite going through four
different spring setups, and i don't feel the need for larger swaybars
than what i have. I wouldn't want to drill holes in my body for the
re-inforcement kit and would only do it if i felt i really needed them,
or if the mounts did indeed start to crack. Keep an eye on these
rear tabs nonetheless :-)

FWIW, back when i had the M3 spring setup, spectators reported that
my inside rear tire was coming off the ground upon turn-in. The soft M3
springs were allowing the outside front corner to dip way down, which
in turn lifts the inside rear corner of the car. When the Bilstein Sport
reached the end of it's extension, it lifted the rear wheel off the ground
momentarily during turn-in !! (it still had the stock 12mm rear swaybar).
That'll give you an idea of how soft the M3 springs are. Even a pair of
stiffer H&R's up front still allowed an excessive amount of body roll, just
not quite as much as the M3 springs did. With your setup, you'll need to
run a lot of negative camber up front and use a lot of air in your tires if
you want their outside edges to survive any track or autocross driving.
If you really want to go fast in these situations, you're going to need
much stiffer springs. I'm way faster on the autocross course now
with the simple addition of the Ground Control/Eibach adjustable
spring setup (450# front rate and 600# rear). My favorite offramps
have never been so fun . . . . ={:-D

Subject: [uuc] <Trade or FS> E36 M3 contour wheels

HI, all:
I just got my suspension done. Too bad, with my contour wheels offset,
the wheel doesn't fit my brake on the front. I was thinking getting spacers
for it, but I guess I need a change in wheel look. So, I decided to either
sell or trade my wheels with somebody else on the digest.

It is M3 contour wheels, (those comes with luxury package), with 17x7.5 all
4 corners. It is original BMW M3 wheels, not the replica. They are
straight with some scratches on the lip, regular wear and tear. I would
like M3 LTW wheels, those 5 spoke wheels. If you are tired of the your M3
wheels, please drop me a line.

Or if you want to get it, I will let it go for $1000 without tires, plus
shipping. (I have boxes for it already). They car located in Ann Arbor,
MI.

Perry.

The car that you are describing is actually the BMW DTC or Super N car. It
is not a SuperTouring car like you see in the British or German SuperTouring
Car Championship, it is actually considered a "showroom stock" car in Europe.
A lot of the countries in Europe are getting rid of the expensive 2.0l Super
Touring formula and replacing it with the Super N class regulations, which
are based on the FIA Group N (production based) rules but allow some
modifications (like racing gearbox) that are not allowed in Group N. These
cars are a lot closer to production versions of the road going cars they are
based on than the Super Touring. Suspension and engine have to use
production mounting points, engines are not allowed much modification etc.
The US series that is closest to this form of racing would be the World
Challenge series

Weren't one of you all thinking that BMW Touring Cars were 4-cylinder
powered beasts? I was looking at the 'Motorsport Section of BMW's German
website and came across this-

http://www.bmw.com/bmwe/pulse/index_motorsport.shtml

click on the link at the right side of the page- "Commitment"-

there's a blurb about the 320 DTC at the bottom of the page- I just
transcibed it, I didn't write it....;)

The 320i DTC is based on the 320i saloon, whereby the regulations of the
German Touring Car Challenge only allow slight modifications. In terms of
capacity the six-cylinder engines in the racing and street versions are the
same, but the power output of the 320 DTC with approx 147 KW (200 HP) is
higher than that of the series model 110 KW.

There was a 2.0L version of the S14 used in competition- now that's a
4-banger!

Also, I'd imagine the BMW bike would be way overpriced for what it can do or
the equipment on it. If you want a foldable bike, there are many companies out
there that make much better rides than BMW.

there are no shops here, then where is the closest one ?

hey! I had the *exact* same problem.. couldn't start the car, couldn't
remove the key..
so I took apart the steering column in a mall parking lot and started it
up with a
screwdriver :)

I spent quite a few hours trying to remove the cylinder (I had a new one
sent from Germany all coded to my keys and everything) and even called
Jenny Morgan (a *very* helpful tech advisor/BMWCCA).

You need to make yourself a tool - something like a toothpick but made
of metal with enough meat on the end to really be able to push firmly.

I took a bicycle spoke to a grinding wheel and made something suitable.

Stick the spike in the small hole in the lock cylinder face (right
beside where the key goes in)

at a certain point ( key turned a little bit clockwise from normal entry
position, but not too far) if you push on the spike and pull on the key,
the cylinder will slide right out.

It took me about an hour of fiddling to get it to work, and once it did,
I could pop it out in 30 seconds.

*Careful* because deep in the bowels of the lock cylinder housing (the
part the cylinder slides into) is a couple of bits with some springs..
they have to do with the steering lock.

Those parts stayed put at first, but after messing around a bit they
came out as well. And I could never get 'em back in properly. So I ended
up leaving them out (which means I no longer have a steering lock)

the 'spike' has to be almost as long as the lock cylinder.. a paper clip
is too wimpy and won't do the job.
