Allen, I'd be interested in the dyno session. I've a 98 323is (E36) with an ERT underdrive pulley (10 HP claimed), and a Conforti intake (10-20 HP estimated). Published HP is 168 at the engine (143 at the rear wheels with 15% loss) so I'm thinking I'm at 190-200 HP at the engine, 160-170 HP at the rear wheels (15% loss again). The button will push in, but nothing else happens. I figured maybe the lube on the mechanism for the central locking bar was probably too stiff for the motor to overcome. Well, it's warmed up here and I *still* can't open the trunk! Not a crisis, but definitely a pain. I've looked in the ETM but it seems everything is on a single fuse, and since the doorlocks work that seems to rule out this most trivial possibility. Any suggestions? BTW, we're talking about at 1985 325e here, and I don't have the correct key for the mechanism - a PO must have replaced it and lost the key. I've always locked/unlocked everything from the doors. Anyway, they're still sitting in here with me in my room. When I took them out of the box, I noticed that the rear bar had some paint chips about the size of mellon seeds. Probably from transporting them, they probably banged against each other in the box. There are a total of 10 of these little paint chips and 5 of them are at the big bend in the rear bar. The red paint layer is like gone so I can see the metal of the bar, gray colored. Since I've read about the sway bar fatigue and rust and stuff, what should I do about the paint chips on my rear bar? Any methods to protect the bar from rusting? What should I do? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks. Regarding Chester's Space Camp story, I could totally relate to it since I was in Al doing the space camp program back in 8th grade. It lasted for a week. It was awesome, stinky space suits and all the machines Chester mentioned where all there. My story was a little different from Chester's though. I didn't have any problem zipping up the suit, although I am pretty big and tall. I was in a practice mission where I was Payload Specialist 2. My job was to get dressed, get on the seat that was connected to the long arm from the shuttle bay and get in the air to help build a pyramid made of heavy white tubes with connecting joints. So I do my job and get dressed and get to the top. 2 more of my pals where down on the ground sweating in their stinky suits. They fetch me the white tubes with all their might and guess what? I found myself stuck in the chair in the air... with one foot hanging on to one of the tubes, another foot holding the other tube, my left arm holding on to the 3rd tube, and my free arm keeping balance, holding on to the seat, and pressing the radio button to speak to some idiot in the control center. I couldn't move and I was yelling "Help Help.. I'm stuck" and all I got was a dinky, "What? I can't hear you... you're stuck? What?" Go figure. I think we never got the pyramid thing. When I first got my '96 328is I thought "Wow, check out this cool digital climate control system!" I even made fun of the dials in my Dad's '95 M3. Now I realize the error of my ways. In "simple" HVAC conditions the system is fine; set it and forget it. But in situations common to northeast winters, it is very difficult to get the system to do what you want. For example, try setting the damn thing to defrost/defog the windshield, at less than full fan speed, WITHOUT looking at display (and taking your eyes away from the road). I want to be able to determine the fan speed with my fingers, not by looking at another damn amber display. Grr. Hey, is it possible to retrofit the dials from a pre-'96 E36 into a '96 with digital climate control? Any gadget freaks wanna give up their dials in exchange for my pretty amber display?
