Hi,

I think a MAP sensor should be even better.
There are AFM emulators that generate an AFM signal to
the Motronic from a MAP sensor.
They are expensive but I think a small microprocessor with an A/D
and D/A port and a simple program could be used. The electronics
should not cost more than 10 dollars.
If you get any more information that is not also on the digest
I would like a copy.

Hi Ya'll,

I've signed up for Gateway Tech. I am not exactly sure why I did so,
with out any advanced information or event scheduling information. It
seems to me, that there is not anything published on which, to make an
informed decision.

What takes place there?

Who other then BMW CCA attendee's are there?

What area's of technical or driving information is presented?

In what type of format?

What expectations should I have?

What did you find the most interesting and the most valued of the
Gateway Tech experience?

Yo David,

You ask:

<<Well, my ICV has finally gone kaput and it's time for a new one. Does
anybody know if there's a place that sells rebuilt units? If there is, do
they work well, or should I just shell out the $150 or so to get a new
one.>>

I just replaced mine recently. Ordered it from James Dean at The BMW Store
in Cincinnati (800.543.1649). Cost is ~$94. Can't help with a rebuilt,
I've never heard of anyone that sells them. You might be able to clean it
enough to make it last a bit longer (that is unless it's totally gone)....I
used brake cleaner to clean and then WD-40 to lube it up afterwords. It
helped for about a month, then deterioration set in again. Another lube job
gave about 2 more weeks then I finally replaced the damn thing. Mine wasn't
exactly kaput but it was getting there. Tell James I sent you...doesn't do
anything for me I just want him to know that I'm satisfied with the service.
Others may offer additional sources. Have fun!

I need advice about changing my 316 '86 ( shift) for
728 '83 (automatic). Key for key. My 316 is in perfect
condition and as far as I saw 728, it looks great too.
Is it good trade or this 728 is bad solution? Can
anyone tell me the consumption of 728.
Thanks,
Ivo

Friend of mine has a '94 325i. 65k miles or so. Automatic.

She reports that when she comes to a stop, the car will occaisionally
stumble 2 or 3 times, almost stalling, then be back to normal. Happens
cold or warm. No check engine light. The problem only started recently.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

No quite a classical plastic deformation. Different mechanism.

As for the sway bars seeing equal loading in both directions of twist, this is worse
from a fatigue point of view than loading in one direction only. This is why there
are technologies like cold expansion that basically treat - holes in metallic plates
for example - so that there is some residual compression on them. That way, when
tesile forces strike the metal sees a zero to max tension and back and no compression,
reducing the cyclic nature of the loading.

I understand how a coil spring (effectively a torsion spring seeing load in
only one direction) of poor material and/or insufficient design for the
application could lose free length (or length @ some load, if you prefer) as
the metal fatigues and possibly deforms plastically, but I do not understand
how the sway bars (straight(ish) torsion spring seeing more or less equal load
reversals (unless you're an oval track racer ;)) could lose effectiveness
unless
they're breaking, or at least losing cross sectional area through some sort of
plastic deformation due to excessive twisting. What am I missing?

Mike,
Sounds like this could be:
1) ignition coil going bad
2) O2 sensor
3) check air flow (air filter, ect.)

Yep ! Thanks to ya'll I was able to disable this 'feature' by simply
pushing the mirror selector switch over the the right. Heck, I just
discovered two days ago that there's a remote trunk release down by the
foot-operated Emergency Brake. TOO MANY GIZMOS!!!

Subject: [uuc] Korman Open House Info, Dyno Sessions

Greetings;
Steve's post reminded me it was time to get a few more details out about
this year's event.

Korman 20th Annual Open House
Saturday, March 4th 2000
Doors open at 10am, most arrive a bit earlier to check out other
attendees cars. Admission is $7.00, includes lunch and raffle ticket.
Kids under 12 in free, we will have an area set aside for them with some
activities to keep them entertained (but it's not day care....)
Cars:
Stella M1 Art Car and Grp. 5 M1 (as usual). The Stella car has been
donated to the Guggenheim Museum in NY but should be here in our
facility on a regular basis as we are it's custodians.
Ray picked up what is *supposedly* his old 2002 race car from Arthur
Porter (Rocky Mtn. Motorsport) over the weekend, it will be on display
as well. I haven't made it out to the shop yet to check it out. We'll
be sorting it out in expectation of Ray doing some vintage events this
year.
An M coupe painted in that
I-change-colors-as-you-look-at-me-Jeff-Gordon-like-color. What else,
let's see, M6 Stroker, half a dozen 2002 restorations, 325ITS car (might
be 4 sale?), standard array of other race cars and "interesting" BMW's,
and of course, what the attendees bring.
In addition to door prizes from Red Line, Bilstein, H&R, Ferodo and so
on, looks like we're going to be able to give away (2) driver's school
passes and (2) lapping day passes to a nearby track. Autothority will be
here with a few goodies to distribute, there will be BMW's for sale.
Of course we'll have the German Luncheon, German band w/alphorn, etc.
Also plan to learn about NASA's expansion into the southeast. If you
have any BMW friends out west you've heard of NASA, now coming to a
track near you.

Now, as for the dyno sessions. We have some cars already scheduled to
do runs (don't worry, they'll be interesting). We will also have slots
available for attendees. SO...
If you want to dyno your car, email me a note describing your car and
it's modifications. We will sit down and pick out a cross-section of
submissions in an effort to get a good sampling. We will determine
participants in advance to help with scheduling, I will post this list
to the digest. Now, to make it interesting, also include the horsepower
you THINK you have or have been TOLD you have with the given parts
you've installed. List the claimed increase for each modification and
the total increase. I'll come up with some special prizes for the
person who gets the closest and the person who misses the mark by the
most.
Hope to see as many of you as possible Saturday, remember to email or
phone in reservations so we'll be sure to have plenty of food.

Subject: [uuc] Bilstein Rebuild/Warranty Information

Gerry:

OE shocks are not warranted by Bilstein. You have to go to the manufacturer for
those. I would imagine you will end up replacing them with new. Eurasian does have
the lowest prices I've found. Don't know anything about rebuilds.

I think you have to go at least in pairs (handling concerns) to replace them so you'd
have to get at least two. However, I drove with one replaced long-distance only for
about 5k miles and it was OK. So, you could do this temporarily if you wanted to for
some reason (only had time to change one each week, for example).

The Bilstein WWW site has good information on the warranty. You need to have proof of
purchase, the receipts, etc.

My understanding is that Bilsteins have a lifetime warranty, but is that just
for replacement parts? The one that seems to have failed is the OE unit, as
far as I can tell.

Also -- I've read of Bilstein's rebuild program, but I'm wondering what the
cost savings might be over purchasing a new replacement unit (i.e. Eurasian's
got HDs in their 'Roundel' ad for $94F/$82R).

Subject: [uuc] Great Tour Story

Small World: A guy comes to my house Saturday to pick up his daughter from
a 4-H meeting being held by my daughter and wife. He sees the GGC BMW CCA
decals on my car's windows and proceeds to introduce himself as a former
chapter president. Jack was active with the GGC in the early '80s (right
before I joined), but then he defected to the Porsche club.

Here was his best story: For about 15 years he has been organizing the
local Porsche club's annual Yosemite tour (over 100 cars!). His daughter
has grown too big to stuff into the back "seat" of the 911, so they took
his wife's E30 318is. Some guy with a 911 says, "So we're gonna have to
drive all the way to Yosemite behind that piece of (crap) 4 cylider box on
wheels?"

Well, Jack and family lead them out of Morgan Hill on some back roads at
about 100 MPH. Around Fresno they stop to rest and regroup, and the same
guy asks, "Are you gonna keep driving that fast?" Jack says, "No, there's
more traffic and turns from here, so we'll be going slower". The guy says,
"Good, because my wife was getting car sick while we tried to keep up with
you." Of course, Jack asks, "Hey, aren't you the guy who complained about
having to follow a 'piece of (crap) 4 cylider box on wheels?'"

I had to share that story with y'all. Moral: It really is the driver more
than the car!

Have a nice week,
