Picture if you will, four fairly large adult males sitting comfortably in a
E34 touring. A quick left turn onto the Cumberland southbound on ramp to
Interstate 75 and full throttle acceleration takes the touring up to about
130mph before the actual interstate is reached. And the on ramp isn't that
long. 'Nuff said about the Euro 3.8L S38. And it was a genuine pleasure
to finally meet Rob and Brett after all this time.

Tom,
I just had mine done, total of AUD$2300 (US$1500) complete conversion. I
was without the car for three days. IMHO , absolutely worth it.

I got married against the honest advice of a mentor,

Bryan Watts asked:
I want to see one of the touring car races
where they use the big motors, like 4.0 liter V8's. Anyone know where that
series takes place??

Bryan,
Out here in Australia, we have what a called the V8 supercars, 5 litre (300
cu in) V8 touring cars limited to approx 600 hp. This is the premier class
in Oz and provides some really balls out racing. On proper road circuits,
these guys usually qualify with at least 10 cars in the same 1/2 second.
One race last year had a huge tanding start and the series leader got a bit
of a shunt which rolled him twice and sent him upside down for about 500
yards and into a wall. Limped away and then won the series anyway.
Only two brands are allowed, Fords and Holdens (GM) and we class it as the
dinosaur brigade.

Mark,

Make sure the Red securing screw has been removed (or rather, since it's a
used Changer, not re-installed). This secures the shuttle mechanism and if
not removed, the dampening of the Changer (which would allow the disk and
laser to float together over road irregularities) will be prevented. Aside
from that, unfortunately, you may have found out the hard way why the unit
was used and for sale...

I purchased a used BMW in-trunk CD changer this winter and installed it in
my late 95 M3. When I put the nice MXX3's this week after scrubbing around
on Blizzaks for too long, with the stiffer ride it is skipping like crazy.
I hear that this is NOT normal.

Anyone else had this problem? Had it fixed? What was the problem? Before I
call a local audio guy who does nice work on this kind of stuff, I wanted to
see if anyone had any experience.

Are you sure it's not a 728i? The 728s came out in carburetted form in 1977
or thereabouts but at some point switched to fuel injection (about 1981,
something like that). The fuel consumption of the 728i will be better, but
the injection system is more complex than plain carbs (either way, if it's
out of tune the consumption will probably be horrendous).

I vaguely remember that 728s (2,788 cc) weren't that much slower than the
732i (3,210 cc) or 735i (3,430 cc) of the same vintage, however it will
probably have been driven as if it was a 735i (which country are you in?).
My concern would be the autobox - if it's a 3-speeder, the 'box is sturdier
but motorway cruising will be noisy, at only 20 mph per 1000 in top. If it's
a four-speeder, which the '83 cars should be, it'll be much more relaxed but
get the transmission checked for a failing clutch pack (transmission shop
will advise). Early 4-speed autos of the type fitted to this car are
apparently prone to burning out one of the clutch packs if the motor is
revved in neutral immediately after the car has been driven in gear (such as
during an emissions check). The proper solution is to modify the gearbox to
allow pressure to bleed off this clutch pack when neutral is selected -
again, a good transmission shop will advise.

Otherwise just be prepared for bigger fuel and repair bills and make sure
you check the chassis and body panels thoroughly for rust. I've never owned
an E23 but perhaps one of the E23 owners can provide general information on
this chassis?

Two true stories from GGC Autocross folklore:

1. Back when the E30 convertible was first introduced in the U.S. a guy
brought his brand new 325ic to a GGC autocross. Peter Knoot and I
inspected and classified it, since that was kind of our job. It sat much
more than an inch lower than any other E30 out there. So we asked him what
kind of suspension he had, and he said, "It's stock". So we look at the
other E30s and look back at the convertible and ask again, no really,
whatcha got under there? Once again he insists that it is stock. This
goes on for a couple of minutes and we finally decide that the dealer must
have put on some kind of aftermarket springs, because this just can't be
stock. So we classified the car as having modified suspension. Well,
guess what? He was right - this became apparent when, after a few more
autocrosses, enough convertibles showed up for us to figure out that stock
is lower for the convertible. Meanwhile, I think we pretty much pissed off
that first guy, because he never came back. And if you're on this list
today, dude, we're sorry. We blew it.

2. Franz Fechner had a cream colored 2000CS which many of you have
probably seen in several BMW books as an example of the model. Franz was
once our autocross coordinator and also an excellent driver. He could turn
some fantastic times in some pretty mediocre vehicles. Franz has moved on
to that great car club in the sky, but his legacy remains. We have named
the perpetual Fechner Cup after him, and the overall winner of the Top
Driver Shootout each year gets his name ingraved on the trophy, which then
occupies the winner's mantle for a year. But I've way digressed here.
Part of our tech inspection process is to bounce the car and see if the
shocks work. Crude, but effective. Well, one day his car won't bounce.
Push as hard as you want on it, the suspension does not budge. So we ask
Franz what he's got for shocks, and he says (yeah, you guessed it),
"They're stock". Well, no stock BMW from the '60s ever came with
suspension THAT stiff! Turns out that's not the real story. He went to
the dealer for shocks with the intent of buying stock units, but of course
shocks for a car that was more than 20 years old were NLA. So the dealer
says they can get an "equivalent" shock that will work. These were on his
car at the autocross. What did the dealer get? Who knows, but they fit,
which was all Franz cared about. But just because they came from the
dealer did not mean they were stock.

Anyway, the point is this: Sometimes when the owner says the suspension is
stock, he's telling the truth and you should believe it. Other times the
owner says the suspension is stock when he knows damn well that it isn't.
So it is a judgement call when the car is classified. Do we believe the
owner, or do we do what we think is right?

In Jim's case, we'll go over the car with a fine tooth comb. :^)

Subject: [uuc] Team Dynamics Wheels

I beg to differ on the quality of these wheels, During the past 2 years I
have put 30K+ on a set , 5 track days, and I live in NH where the roads
aren't always the best. They have not bent, gone out of round, or failed me
in any way. I run the 17"X 7 1/2" with a 225/40x17 tire on an E30 M3.

I'd have to say that I have been very pleased , as for the money they can't
be beat.

During the time I have driven on these I have a friend who has destroyed 3
very expensive brand name alloys of the same size on an E34 M5 . . . . and
he lives in Connecticut where the roads are far better.

As for balancing a low profile tire on a wide wheel, I haven't had any
difficulties as long as I had the weights mounted just inside the spokes,
and none on the inside bead. This does balance only on one plane, and the
ride has been smooth, and tire wear negligible.
