Fischer" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] Gateway Tech I haven't kept the programs from the maybe 15 Gateway Techs I have attended, but here is a synopsis: On Friday and Saturday, from maybe 9am to 4pm, there are 55 minute presentations, with several going on at any one time, and most are done twice so that if there are 2 that you want to attend at the same time you can attend the other at a later time. The sessions are mostly technical, but you can also listen to Carl Nelson from CNPR scare you into not doing a restoration, or Mike Self expound on the wonders of rust. Club Racing will be there, and probably a session on prepping a car for Drivers School. The vendor area is a great place to spend money on goodies for your BMW. BMW NA will probably bring a race car and a new model, and there will be other interesting BMWs on display. Possibly the best part of the weekend is the information you can glean from conversations and lie swapping with other Bimmer folk in the lobby and the bar - that starts early and goes into the night. With 2 - 3 hundred people there, the talk is great. Most if not all of the BMW CCA TIPS representatives will be there, and they should host an open question/answer session on Sunday morning. In the past the event also included the Club's Annual Meeting, with the opportunity to meet the collective turkeys we have elected to cause annual deficits whilst over $1,000,000 sits in certificates of deposit (I was one of those turkeys for some 13 years starting in 1977). However, that awesome event will take place in Chicago this weekend. Still, at least some of them will be there so as to run up the travel account. Come with a positive attitude! She was cruising at 70+ on Interstate 440 in Raleigh, N.C. yesterday morning. She said a white 7 passed her with Florida Plates and "Tarheel" personalized on it. Moments later she saw a state trooper pursuing with lights flashing and passed her like she was parked. She said the trooper must have been doing 100+mph. Moments later, she saw the trooper had the 7 sled pulled over. If the owner is on this digest, I'm curious as to whether you can enlightened us. There are two points on the sides of the changer that must be set to H or V (Horizontal or Vertical) depending on how you mounted it. Driving home from work today, I heard a rasping noise coming out of what sounded like the exhaust. It only happens periodically, but sounds horrible. I got a used B&B Tri-Flo exhaust (bad idea)and am thinking that maybe something got loose in there. The sound is something almost like a fan blade hitting something with a sharp rasp over and over. I love the controls in the 318ti. Best of any late model BMW - just three big knobs. The early 3-series controls are pretty good too, but I have to adjust _two_ temp knobs and they're smaller. Does anybody really try to get the passenger's side 20 degrees warmer than the driver's side? And let me add radio buttons to this gripe. A radio should have two buttons... no, KNOBS! Two knobs, that's IT. Big knobs, just like we like 'em! Knobs you can wrap a hand around and KNOW what you've got a hold of; one for volume, one for tuning. OK, I can see having coaxial or push-pull type controls for other functions of a modern stereo built in to those knobs, but give me two big freakin' knobs so I don't have to search for freakin' chicklet sized buttons! Why BMW feels the need to keep up with Japan, or GM, or whoever, on this trend toward digital everything, I don't know. NOTHING is more ergonomically sensible and functional in an automobile than big analog controls and readouts. Why don't we replace the steering wheel with two little buttons for left and right that allow you to adjust your course in .5 degree increments? Then if you hold the button down for more than a second, it will jump to 5 degree increments for faster cornering. Hold it down for three seconds, and it will enter "Scan Mode" where your course will change rapidly every few seconds until you reach a desired direction. Could be the hot ticket for autocross! Why do the morons who put digital controls in a car think that radio or climate controls should be less intuitive than steering the car? They seem to be tough enough, but simply aren't round, and you could see it from day 1 once they were spun on a balancer. I agree that $170 is a great deal for a decent wheel that stands up to abuse. But if the manufacturer has poor enough quality control to ship some wheels that aren't round, you gotta wonder what other kind of flaws are out there waiting to be discovered. So if you're bargain hunting for alloys, DON'T assume they're perfect just because they're new. I do not want to use the "sunglasses" holder area to store it, as the only "consoles" out there for that area is for 3 VDO gauges, and I only want to install 1 gauge. I know the ashtray is probably the ideal location, but does anyone know who might sell a "template" so that I can just drop the gauge in? Or a piller mount would work as well, but I believe the "angle" of the E30 pillars won't work as good as the E36s. 2. The driver's side front pillar, it's covered in some sort of vinyl covering from the factory. I think over the years and some beating from the sunlight, it's beginning to bubble. What can I do about this? Should I use a syringe w/ glue in it and "prick" the middle of the "bubble" and try and glue it back? Sorry about the questions.
