Ya know, when one talks to a customer service rep and he says "well maybe
you should buy a pump from your dealer, and just return ours" (which is the
conversation I just had), one should, perhaps, take that as A Sign. The
fact that they shipped the wrong gasket with the thermostat ain't exactly
thrilling either.

I understand that. In this case, though, they singled out the M3 as being
unique in having an apparently non-existent feature. I've learned to ignore
such things and move on, but I will comment on them.

Good point. My wife's car is a '98 Passat. You think BMW is reticent about
releasing repair info? VW ain't much better.

Ah for the days of my '79 Civic. The official shop manual for that
explained not only procedures, but the theory behind them (which was real
handy when dealing with the nightmare of hoses, valves, and fixed orifices
(not neutered poodles) involved in the intake/pollution control systems).

I can already imagine it: First autocross. Full lock left... Full lock
right... Radio turns on and off, volume goes up and down, cell phone
calls 911, and the horn goes off intermittently. It could be amusing to
the corner workers. Do we really need _that_ many buttons in a steering
wheel?

I'm afraid I don't recall specifically what's in the E28 cars, but if the
car uses standard sealed-beams, then yes, the connectors will fit H4/H1
bulbs w/o change.

If you're pinched for cash, buy the H4 (low/high) lights now, and worry
about the H1 (high beams) later. The important one is the *low* beam,
which in sealed-beam lights is almost useless, and it's the one you use 99%
of the time.

The high-beam lights are brighter (and if you've got the wiring and
alternator for it, you could run 55/100W H4 bulbs and 100W H1 bulbs and go
around melting guardrails) but the big win is in having good low beams.

This does sound weird to me; every Euro car I've played with the wiring in
(and that doesn't include an E28, alas) has had good enough electricals
that you didn't need extra relays unless you were running a ton of wattage.

My Taurus SHO, on the other hand...needed relays and heavier wiring just
for the stock 9004 lights (which were awful, and are still not great, but
that's all you can get...) Hint: Peugeot 405s have a nice,
universally-sized relay box under the hood if you can find one at the
junkyard.

I haven't noticed this problem, though maybe I'm just not sensitive enough.
With the quad-light arrangement you can use the H1 lights to fill in
wherever the H4s don't anyway, and as mentioned above the total amount of
light available is highly configurable.

Subject: [uuc] Brake service

Hey Guys,

I have a simple question on servicing brakes. Every
about 5-10k miles I change the fluid, remove the
calipers, clean things up and put them back together.
My question is about the type of lubricant I should
be using. I bought a tube of high temp superlube from
kragen and I apply it generously around the brake pad
sliding and contact points. And I use high temp
bearing grease for the caliper bolts.

Is this wrong? Cuz when I come top relube and clean
up the lubricant I use for the pads are usually gone.
Am I using the wrong stuff? If I am what should I be
using?

What do you guys use to lube that area?

TIA

Jerry, I'm in the same boat. My better half has an Avus blue 95 M3 and when
I emailed her the pic's of Rob's new toy, she said "since it's the same
color, I wouldn't really be changing cars. My birthday is coming soon, and
you really should buy me the M5 Touring in Avus, it'll hold both poodles
with room for you, too"

Anybody got any leads on a slightly used M5 touring in Avus? Rob?

Wierd, mine are the opposite, flat Hellas, domed Cibies. The Hellas have a
sharper cutoff and beam distinction while the Cibies are more smooth all
over.

Don's and Brian's car sales advice is excellent.

Brian wrote:

I submit that it is best for the seller to take care of this
and to do it before 'delivery', the time at which the car
and the money irrevocably change hands. As a seller, you do
not want the buyer to have the car before delivery for any
reason except a test drive. Also, make it clear that the sale
is "as-is", no guarantee, and final.

And to amplify an earlier point about evaluating potential buyers:
a person who calls in response to an ad and is interested primarly
in the price is not a likely buyer for a nice car. Don't waste
your time talking to them. Likewise, a caller who tries to
negotiate a price without having seen the car is also not serious.

I once got a drunken-sounding message on my answering machine that
went like this: "How much dya want for da bEEEmer?" That was it --
no other questions, no name, no phone number.

So I get a promotion at work, but along with the promotion comes
relocation too . . .from USA to Japan for two years.

Now I have to figure out how to store my '88 M5 while I'm gone. I've
got some general ideas, but would prefer if someone out there could
point me to a good source of information on this (maybe a webpage,
magazine article, or chapter from a book).

The car is going to be in a non-heated garage with the wheels off or
sitting on jackstands to raise the tires off the ground to keep them
from flat spotting. I also know about emptying the gas tank, but that
is about it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: [uuc] <E30> Mr. Jack Money's Exhaust R&R

Jack Money and I worked on replacing the exhaust (cat-back only) on his 89 iX last
evening. I'll comment randomly since most have an idea on how to do this anyway.

1. Rubber doughnut hangers go on easily with soap. Dawn. Without soap it is very
tough to get them on. Just use soap!

2. One of the muffler hangers had been removed. Seemed like it had never been there
in the first place. Strange.

3. The new exhaust ($204) looked kind of cheap. Like inexpensive exhaust tubing at an
Auto Zone. Slightly disappointing. It was a Boysen, maked with BMW and the Roundel.

4. The hanger kit should have included new bolts, but did not. New nuts in copper
were supplied though.

5. Removing the nuts and bolts that held the cat-back section to the cat was a pain!
We had to death-wheel off everything. Even after cutting and drift punching two of
the bolt sections in the flanges did not come off. We used a C-clamp, socket and
pushed one through by force. The other one we had to drill out after removing the
flange from the exhaust. Not easy and very tedious. All this corrosion was very very
disappointing. I helped KC Boyce do his exhaust and it was much easier.

6. The exhaust did not line up right and will most likely bang against the heat
shields. Jack and I could not figure out what went wrong. Ideas anyone?

7. The exhuast is slightly tilted. I imagine we could tilt the muffler in its hanger
and might do that next time we meet.

8. In the end, I felt the job was well done, but the results were not up to
expectations. I'm hoping my install week after next will go better. The car was
quieter and now intake and engine mechanical noise dominate the car's acoustic
signature!
