It was an unusual situation for the inspector, I think, having both of us there and knowing that we're friends. He eventually admitted that *he* would buy the car (the ultimate inspector compliment, I think) but you could tell he had been practicing NOT being enthusiastic for years. All went well, though I was embarrassed to discover that TWO of my LTW wheels were bent. I guess miles in the Justy with a bad CV joint numbs you to minor vibrations in the Bimmer. Contrast this experience to the inspection I had done in Tennessee on the '91 318is we bought from digester Bob Moore. The shop owner called me up: "Yeah, this thing is incredible. Haven't seen one this nice in years. I'm not even going to charge you full price for the inspection." When I sold my Tiger, the guy who bought it negotiated a price with me over the phone, and gave me a BIG deposit without seeing the car first - with the understanding that he could back out if the car was not how I represented it (fresh engine rebuild, but enough parts still in boxes that it wasn't yet drivable). I questioned him about this buying strategy, and he said it wasn't the first time he'd bought a car that way. His feeling was, if the buyer can ask the right questions, and the seller can answer them (and the answers are somewhere in the same zip code as the reality of the car's condition) you can cut a deal over the phone. Worked for me - the money made it possible to buy an M3 (ObBMW content). I saw several books on suspension tuning there. Lastly, talk to Leo Franchi. He's put together a couple of software tools that help with suspension tuning. I mean this guy Leo was a driver on race teams with David Hobbs and Willie T. Ribbs as well as others. Leo and David were racing the E30 M3 when it first hit our shores. Plus he's currently working on some of the fastest club racing cars in the Midwest, and most of these cars are E36s.
