Ok, I'm sure most of you have had time to check out the M3 site by now (once you've gotten past the registration crap) and do a little bit of drooling. BMW was nice enough to provide the thickness of the brake discs in the specs, but left out one important tidbit -- the weight. Anyone know how much the thing is going to weigh? For comparison, the last US E36 M3 is listed at 3175, the E46 328Ci at 3197. Unless some of those unique-to-M3 body panels are aluminum or composite, I have a feeling that the M3 will weight even more, which IMO is moving in the wrong direction. Adding power to compensate is one thing, but mass is still mass, to the detriment of dynamics. Other misc ramblings (some definitely nitpicky -- so sue me) based on the photos: - - The flared wheel arches and power bulge give the E46 body some much needed machismo (a better term escapes me at the moment). But, perhaps some of the money spent on parts to help visually differentiate the M3 could have been better spent on some nice big brakes and 4-piston calipers that peek out behind the wheels. - - The gills...ugh. Even if they are functional(?), they look gimmicky and out of place. - - The underbody shot shows extensive shrouding (but not as much as a F355/360 or Skyline GT-R), which for DIYers brings to mind: how am I going to reach the oil drain plugs? An oil sucker may be a necessary purchase. Also check out the size of the muffler can. - - "BMW M Power" has been banished from the cam cover, with only a solitary M badge to take its place. Can't wait to see what some of you with M-badgeitis issues do when some bloke sticks a M badge on his 4-banger (but they have drugs for that now). Couldn't they have found a more graceful way to route the crankcase ventilation hose? - - Buttons! Lots of buttons! Does Jenson get a M3 as part of his Williams deal? Steering wheel looks plasticky. The combination of gray gauge faces, titan rings, red needles (which should bisect the hubs) and black hubs looks incongruous. I hope the nav system is optional. - - Overall, lots of eye candy; seemingly more Executive Express than Track Toy. Don't get me wrong, the new M3 will surely be a kick a** car--one I wouldn't mind having; very capable, very fast, very expensive, but will it be any _fun_? Especially if you're not going 100mph or lapping a track? I guess it depends on whether you like simple pleasures...the journey itself or the potential payoff at the end of the journey. Make no mistake, the evolution of M, and BMW as a whole, continues. The temp sender is certainly now above the water level in the engine and is reporting nothing useful. My bet is our intrepid Alix won't make the drive 3 miles home before the car is dead (though those eta engines could prove me wrong). At any rate, by the time she can get the car home driving it'll be time to shop for a new engine. The cylinder head will have cracked without coolant and the main bearings will likely have had more heat than a trickle of oil can help dissipate so a sudden stop is likely. Jim's sequence of events on the water pump failure leading to the failure of the belt seems extremely likely. Alix, call in a favor. Get a ride home. Get a tow truck to take the car somewhere you can trust. It may be too late already unless you're in the very far north and temps are in the low teens.
