Subject: [uuc] 535 engine nightmare--follow-up

Went to see the disassembled beast today to look at the possibly fictitious
wear. The tensioning rails did indeed have deep grooves in them and the
sprocket teeth were concave. I probably didn't hear any noise in the engine
because of the headers and gurgling B&B. I don't know whether the odo was
messed with previously (I bought the car w/60k), but the insides seemed
heavily worn. Not an oil starvation issue, either, but wear and tear.

I OK'd the replacement of the chain, sprocket, and assorted incidentals. The
initial $600 phone estimate of P&L (remember, on top of the $900 gasket job)
was garbled a bit in my panic-stricken brain pan, and none of the repairs
targeted the oil pump or injectors. These things were part of the horrific
"what-if" scenario the mech laid out if the work wasn't done.

So the big-six proves to be at least $600 less bulletproof than I thought,
and thanks to those fellow '35 owners who let me know I wasn't alone. And
many thanks to Andy Thomas, the mighty BOHICA-hardened Don Eilenberger, and
Bill Ballon for some rock solid advice during these edgy hours. You guys
were terrific.

Nah, that was just Rob using an alias. If those guys could only be so
open-minded!
Say, how many poodles could you fit in the backseat of that new M3? <g>
Not beating a dead thread.

I know this is an old thread, but is there any late news -- and, until there are
searchable archives, I need a little help
A very reputable tuner is selling a suspension package with Billstein shocks,
H&R springs and, I believe, Racing Dynamics swaybars. The sways carry a guarantee
from Electrodyne, the US subsidiary. The package says Racing Dynamics and is the same
as the Italian logo.
Are these sways any good or should I look elsewhere, such as the new UUC sways? I am
ready to install.... the first NJ chapter autox is 4 weeks away!!
Thanks all.

Uh, don't you usually ride the horse, or is this some new PETA thing,
driving your horse around? :-)

Last time I broke a belt like this was a long time ago, when I had a
Toyota. The problem was that the water pump bearing went, first leaking
and spraying coolant all over the engine, then finally seizing, which was
when the fan belt broke.

>The emergency lights on the instrument panel are all illuminated.

Sounds like the alternator isn't being driven - I don't remember if the
BMWs have a single belt that drives everything, or separate belts. If they
have separate belts, the fan belt may have jammed/broken the alternator
belt when it snapped. That's what happened on my Toyota.

>Only cold air will go thru the vents.

If your water pump isn't pumping, then hot water won't be circulating
through the heater.

>The car is running hot of course, but only at the 3/4 mark, not into the
>red at all.

I'd be real wary of trusting the temp gauge - I don't know if the sender
for the gauge is on the engine block, or if it relies on circulating water
to get a reading. If it relies on circulating water, since the water isn't
circulating, it may not be reading anywhere near the truth. Also,
depending on how much coolant was lost, the temp sender may not be immersed
in coolant anymore, which would make it read wrong, too.

>the 3 miles home when I leave work tonite (sorry guys, but a 19 yr old

This is not good. It's too late now, but maybe a taxi or bumming a ride
from a friend would have been a better thing to do. Or, riding your horse!
I don't know about the 325e engine, but it seems like newer engines don't
handle overheating very gracefully - they tend to warp their heads, or do
other bad things.

>So what exactly have I ruined on my car? Any takers?

My guess is that you will need a new water pump, belts, coolant. While
that's being replaced, it may be a good idea to change your thermostat if
it hasn't been replaced in a while. Hopefully that's all...

Hope this helps,

Sears has some perfectly decent jacks - if you're going to use it at home,
just get one of their heavy full-size ones, and it will last you a long
time. Lincoln makes a jack that you can find at the chain stores (like Pep
Boys) or at Costco from time to time - it's the USA 2000, and it goes for
something like 200 bucks or less. It doesn't have as heavy of a frame as
the industrial-grade Lincoln 96342, but it has the same hydraulic mechanism.

What I would suggest avoiding are any of the 29.95 compact jacks that you
find at the chain stores, unless you want something that's light enough to
haul to the track. I bent the frame on one of these in about the fourth
time I used it. Definitely not worth the money...

Hope this helps,

I'm going to refrain from telling you what I think you can do with your
opinions. Instead I'm just going to ask that you read "The Machine That
Changed The World". It was written several years back by several M.I.T.
researchers. They have plenty of *informed* things to say about Toyota....
After reading, I'd love to hear your response.

And yes, there is a reason Porsche came running to Toyota several years ago
begging for help with their production system (or should I say craftwork
system?).

Now, I don't want to start any rumors, nor do I want to seemingly go
against the long suffering and hard working monitors but there's something
that just doesn't seem right here. Granted, the poodle/sheep thread doesn't
have much to do with BMWs or underground upgrades, but it was good-natured
and enjoyable fun. However, the monitors have shut the thread down without
even a how-do-ya-do. This comes right on the heels of an amusing post on
this very subject by the founder and owner of this list.
There's something very not right here. Not that I'm paranoid, but this has
the stench of conspiracy. Were we coming too close to the truth? Is there
something to the whispered rumors of poodle customization? Is Uucmotorwerks
working on a Baabarian? Does the rumored Black Sheep model actually exist?
What of Brett? Is there any truth to the allegations that he is, in fact,
an alien? Did something come out of that long ride up the eastern seaboard
that remains top hush-hush double-secret?
I don't want to rabble-rouse here and I do not want to re-activate a
verboten thread but I think that this demands an investigation. I know that
this will raise the ire of the powers that be and may even cause the MIB to
appear at my door, but I know there's something here and I'm going to get
to the bottom of it even if I have to suffer banishment to get there. So
here's the deal, do not, I repeat DO NOT, post any responses to this to the
list. That will only put you under the microscope. Instead, send me
privately any responses, theories, innuendos, blatant lies or bizarre
constructs that you have any knowledge of. Periodically I will post the
findings of Poodlegate from a secret email account under an assumed name.
Something nondescript and innocuous like, say, Todd Kidney or Mork Kibart.
Help me get to the bottom of this folks. We need to know the truth. Until
then, you will only know me as Deep Ewe.

Subject: [uuc] First posting questions

As a newbie (and very satisfied customer!) to the list, I had a few
questions. I hope they haven't been asked too many times recently:

1) Which Red Line manual transmission fluid is most often recommended by
this august body...MT-90 or MTL? This would be for my 98 M3/4 5-speed.

2) I'm about to buy a '92 or '93 vintage BMW (100K+ miles). If the car
has used traditional lubricants to date, is it recommended by car nuts
like us to switch to synthetic lubricants like Red Line, or would this be
foolish?

Thanks in advance for any input.

ATF-D4. Check your owner's manual - they recommend an automatic tranny
fluid...

Ochi-wan-kenobi wrote about putting ATF in a manual transmission and that
the owner's handbook thingie recommends it. I've got an '87 325iS with the
obligatory manual transmission - what kinda lubricant should I have?
