I have used gloves in the past, but not those brightly colored nomex ones. I had an old pair of driving gloves, black leather, that I threw in with all the gear before one driving school. They saved the day. When it gets hot, and your hands are dirty, your wheel can get grimy and sticky. Gloves definitely help. Good nomex ones will run you upwards of $100 though. I have recently been through THREE emissions inspections trying to renew the license plates for my 1996 328i (with all of 23,000 miles). The car is entirely stock, with the exception of the software upgrade. The first two times I had the AutoThority software in my computer and the last time I had the Jim Conforti software. NO OTHER CHANGES were made to the car between attempts. Results: Run HC CO NO # ppm % ppm Result - ---- ------- ----- ------- ---------- 1. 224 3.51 43 FAIL 2. 91 2.10 223 FAIL 3. 42 0.02 21 PASS Limits 78 0.44 625 The above tests were all on Virginia's new (and highly controversial) treadmill test. I had multiple test conducted, because the dealer (BMW of Fairfax) could not find anything wrong with the engine (no fault codes, no visible problems, no vacuum leaks, etc). By the way, I was honest with the dealer (I told them about the software upgrade) and they still treated me fairly and made an honest attempt to look for problems. Yes, that is a "good dealer" plug. A big heavy car, that is awsomely powered and technoligically advanced. These new ///M's have lots of electronics and technology, then throw some more electronics and technology in. Are the cars fast, you bet. Are they comfortable, absolutely. Are they fun???? Thats the real question. While I haven't beed in a new ///M5, I was in '00 540is, were going 120mph, and want to take a nap! I felt so disconnected from the driving experience, I wanted to just take a nap and let the car drive me to where I want to go. It seemed the whole car was gear'd to insulate the driver from the driving experience. This was the compliant from the Roundel articles. My E28 '88 535is(even before I turbocharged it) was and still is visoral candy at speed. Most good, some bad, as in all driving experiences. At 120 your absoletley dialed in on what! s happening, theres feedback from all the systems of the car. At 120 in the E39, dead quiet, smooth as silk ride, 1 finger on the steering wheel. Now this says alot about how well the car works, but some sensation of speed was needed. Some connection to the sensory input that is, "high speed in a car", would be nice. This is the same complaits about the ///M5. I bet the E46 ///M3 will have similar driving experience. Not to worry, I still love my car, think BMW's are fantastic, and I count this as a lesson learned. This car has been quite good to me, so I won't complain. It will get a nice bath and wax when this is over, and maybe that'll hold it over till I can get that tie rod end changed... You might be relieved to know that I didn't drive the car home last night, and had it towed this morning to a shop. Still waiting to hear what exactly I've killed. The reason I put the blame on the belt was because the belt has been squealing for a while. I have a new belt in my trunk, but haven't had a chance to put it on. Stupid stupid stupid, I know. My coolant sensor light never went on last night, and when looked at the coolant reservoir last night, it seemed to be at an acceptable level. The coolant that was in the engine compartment couldn't have been more than a couple ounces. I have no idea why this is. I'll know soon. The car didn't die, or run abnormally at all, the 5 miles or so that I drove it. I would think that a damaged head would cause the car to behave abnormally, but what do I know. For now I'd like to think that the head is ok. Please humor me. In retrospect, I would have left the car at the gas station, and not gone to work. Sometimes priorities aren't quite as clear as we'd like them to be. Sorry guys... I can tell you anything you want to know about computers or horses, but cars just aren't my forte. I just had Euro bumpers put on Traci, my E28. The body shop I go to does outstanding work on all sorts of cars from Toyota's to Porsche's. As they were pulling the components out of the boxes from BMW, they commented on the quality, of the chrome work, of the fitting, of the workmanship. In their words, body pieces from Japan are "crap". Bad, uneven chroming, flimsy pieces, a real lack of quality control. I guess it's one thing to see a finished product vs. a repaired one, but I think one should be able to build a car from the parts catalog that is comparable to what you get from a showroom floor.
