Corral Info Hey everyone- It's almost that time again- the 12 Hours of Sebring is just two weeks away. This year's event will be particularly memorable for BMW fans- the Team PTG E46 M3 will make it's racing debut at this year's event. The BMW LMP which won last year's event in the closest-ever Sebring finish will be returning as well. I just had opportunity to bug our Southeast Regional VP- Carlos Diaz-Estrada- about the BMW Corral planned for the event this year, and I offered to pass the info on to you all. As usual, the corral will be located at Turn 17, which is a great location for viewing the race. This year's corral will be different in some regards than years past- the corral is now paved, as it serves as the Skid Pad area for the Driving School at Sebring. The largest impact of this change is as it relates to canopies, tents, and use of similar items that require stakes- or not using them, more appropriately. The corral is free- once your regular race ticket is purchased you will have what you need for admission to the corral as well. You_will_need to know where it's located, and you will need to know to tell the track workers where you're headed. You will enter the corral from the vicinity of the drive-over bridge to the competitor's paddock. To get to the corral, follow the paved entrance road to the paddock drive-over bridge and turn right just before the bridge. There is a worker's booth right here, and they can help direct you. Once here, you will drive past 'Alfa Alley', and us Bimwads will be right there past the Alfa folks. This year's corral will not have the same level of sponsorship as in years past. The amenities will be basic, and will include a tent and private port-o-lets (believe it or not, this truly IS an amenity). We will be on our own for most everything else. Of course, if you're willing to fork over several thousand dollars for a lunch buffet and closed circuit race coverage, just let us know and we'll get to work! Hope to see some of you all there! Ooh, ooh jackstand stories. I have one too, I've mentioned it before but since I enjoy re-telling it here it goes. Mine involves the One Lap of America, a BMW competitor, and a Porn star. OK first off the Porn star was just co-driving so nothing juicy to tell you guys. The car had a transmission problem which the driver was trying to solve. He put the car up on one side using a floor jack in the front and a stock jack in the rear. Well you know what happens next, SNAP! SNAP! both jacks collapse and he's pinned under the car. My buddy and I just happened to be walking by as this happened so we were there pretty quickly trying to lift the car off this guy. Honestly, I thought he was going to die. A few seconds later a few more people arrived and we picked the car up about 3 ft in the air! The car went up so fast the driver tried to grab it because he thought we were going to flip his race car. Unlike Duane's story, this dude let out some pretty gruesome screams. Now the almost cool part is that the Porn lady was videotaping the driver working on the trans and they were chatting on tape the entire time. Well I thought maybe the whole incident was on film but when the car fell she panicked and dropped the camera and started screaming as well. Funny I don't remember her screaming, everything went silent when I saw the car fall and I froze momentarily. My buddy was the first one lifting the car and seeing that snapped me from my temporary daze. Apparently the videotape has all the audio in it and he said it's real gruesome with the sound of the car dropping and all the screaming in the back ground. He said at first he thought he was OK but later felt some pains in his chest and skull. Duane added: >That had to be the second longest 5 minutes of my life.... As a confirmed used car buyer, most of my cars have 60k plus on the odometer when I purchase them, but I usually purchase one-owner cars with detailed histories. That goes for my past '80 528i, '84 533i, and present '85 535i. It also goes for my past '89 Honda Civic, purchased with 95k on it, which died due to "sudden impact" last month, still going strong with 212k on it, still getting 42mpg. I've replaced it with a "like new" '88 Accord, with 92k one-owner miles on it, and I expect it to go 300k, just like the 535i. Yes, the driving with it will be "less spirited", as it's mostly daily transportation for the female side of the family. It will also use a lot less GAS, and lower grade, while getting everyone from here to there and back again. I have friends and family with VERY high-mile Hondas, and, not being in the rust belt, they go ON and ON, just like BMWs that are equally well-maintained.
