Rolf, I never thought of it that way. Very perceptive of you and I must
agree. Nothing against newer models or features but we are definitely
straying from what was once a remarkable and elite marquee in exchange for
buttons and gadgets that satisfy the "marching morons" of society.

In Autoweek a couple of weeks ago (sorry, the exact issue escapes me) there
is a photo of a prototype 2000 M5 Touring, and they mention that the prior
M5 Touring (Rob's) was Euro-only, and that there were only 500 made.

Depending on what size you need, cruise through some Toyota parts - they use
a spring-type that is two wires (actually one wire that wraps around twice),
exerting tremendous holding force along two lines. I've used them in places
where regular hose clamps wouldn't grip (high-pressure turbo outlet).

Richard. No. Mine work just fine at -50F. Can't turn the steering wheel
because the power steering fluid gets too thick, but my gauges work just
fine.
Hope that helps.

>> Apparently 80% of 3-series imported into the US are automatics.

I'd guess that's right. I about had a heart attack over Christmas when I saw an
affordable E46 323i. It was a 5-speed equipped with CD player, sunroof and maybe
another option or two for only $1000 extra or so. Total MSRP under $30K. Knowing how
much the sunroof and CD player alone cost, I asked the salesman what the deal was.

His reply was (and this may be total B.S.) that BMW ran short on auto transmissions,
so they had just 5-speeds to sell for a couple of weeks. But in order to move them,
they had to offer the dirt cheap value package, 'cause they wouldn't sell otherwise.

I'd love to know if this is true.

Subject: [uuc] <E30> Problems with crank case breather pipe

I have an 86 325e that I recently rebuilt the head on.
I had trouble installing the head particularly with the
breather pipe. I managed to get it done, but ever since
the pipe has a MAJOR air leak where it connects with
the bottom of the intake. The problem is the top of the
pipe will not completely seat in the intake. I am not sure
what I am doing wrong??

Questions:

Is the top seal an o-ring or a square lip seal?

Wound a breather pipe from an 88 325i fit the
eta motor? I have an extra motor, but it is the
M20 not the eta.

Thanks.

Subject: [uuc] <E30> sunroof questions

All,

My sunroof has recently become inoperable. I can hear the motor
running when I press either of the buttons, but it doesn't move the
sunroof. I cannot move the sunroof, either into the "open" or "vent"
position manually.

I'm pretty sure I need to replace some cables, but how do I access them
if I can't open the sunroof? I've done some work up there before, and
the only way I know how to access all that stuff is to remove the trim
panel, which is done with the sunroof partially open!

TIA.

This can be attributed to "shit happens..." =) When you had that fault, did
you run the talk nearly empty? Someone once mentioned that the sending unit
gets a little warm when there is no fuel around it. That's a scary thought and
I have no basis for the guess. At any rate, many people run into this problem
even following the "keep the key in your pocket" technique.

I think this ignition thing is "urban legend" and not the true cause of
the fuel-gauge problem. Lief Anderberg posted the following message to
the 318ti list a few weeks ago:

=-=-=-=

Just talked to a friend at the factory in Germany about this. It seems they
might have it licked. It only happens in this country, not anywhere else in
any significant numbers. It has nothing with leaving the door open or
ignition switches. It seems it is caused by the additives in the gas,
probably MTBE, that we use here. BMW is re-designing the senders and
covering all electrical connections with gold. They have worked on this
problem now for quite some time and they now believe they have solved it
with the help of Siemens. Time will tell, but they are supposed to issue a
service bulletin, if they haven't already, about warranting these units even
if they are way out of warranty. Check next time with your dealer. Just
thought you wanted to know.
Regards,
Leif

Hope Leif doesn't mind me re-posting his message! This seems to me to be
the more likely as the true cause of this problem!

Subject: [uuc] Newbie has question about brake lights

I'm new to this board, so please bear with me if this question has been
asked already. Every couple of weeks or so, the gremlins in my computer
on my '98 328ic light up and say "brake light failure" and I check my
brake lights and they are fine. I turn off the car, and restart it, and
it goes away, but comes back later. Any suggestions?

I also have the fuel gauge problem of going to empty as soon as you fill
it on my '96 318ti. When it was under warranty, the sending units were
changed twice, but it is recurring. I will try the "pull the fuse"
trick I just read about and see if that works. I've learned something
already. Thanks - Jeff

I'm saving these up.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] comments on Jim's throttle body shortfall conundrum:

> don't you mean that you only had a single exhaust?
> ie 318ti instead of a m3 twin pipe exhaust?

I'll throw something in here. It's unlikely anyone will own up to sticking
an ///M badge on his/her 318 for fear of reprisal by the ///M police.
However a few years ago a single-tailpiped four-door ///M318is appeared on
the German price listings using the M42 DOHC 16v motor instead of the
single-cam 8v M43 unit that usually appears in a 318i four-door of
Euro-market ilk. It sold in numbers sufficient to qualify the car for a
particular class of the DTM series (something like that anyway) as it came
from the factory with a bunch of aerodyna///Mic addenda. No less an M than
an M535i, I suppose, and similarly equipped with only one throttle body.

Carlos ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) dryly adds:

> See that's odd, when I hear the term "Laguna" first thing that
> pops into my mind is Laguna Seca (Dry Lagoon) the racetrack.

Oh yes, I'd forgotten about Laguna Seca. Didn't think about what it meant.
"Seca" is also the suffix Toyota attaches to its Corolla hatchback in some
markets. So a Toyota Corolla Seca is a "Corolla Dry". Which sounds
suspiciously like a brand of beer.

And finally ben ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) writes about Rob's Family Truckster:

> you also have the rare "shooting brake" identifyer which usually
> is applied to Jag XJS's or large Aston Martin's which look like
> little station wagons & are built by small Brisith conversion firms.
> These seem to be for the British upper class to put large dogs in

> down-market.

No they're not. They're for storing one's quarry when out shooting peasants.
