No guarantees on veracity, but it seems to make sense. Turns out the glass is all about the same -- has to be do to gov't safety issues. Or at lest that's their story and ... . In any case appearance is identical -- just don't have the tiny "BMW" imprint. Service mgr at dealer said they started doing WS due to shoddy work on subcontracts. Now use a "$67 glue kit" and service is performed by a "BMW master technician." Don't know that I need a master technician installing my WS. Takes BMW 3 hours to install. (That must include a couple trips to the bierstube). So anyway, I had Safelite install -- $240 v. $550. They use urethane adhesives and they guy doing installation had 18 years experience. Much has changed over that time regarding techniques for installation. Due to pasenger side airbags need to use WS for deployment, liabilty issues ensure that most installmwnt is quality -- which primarily just means that base is cleaned and WS and base are primed to provide optimal bonding with urethane ahheseive. If not airbag blows WS 50 feet up in the air -- sometimes followed by occupant. Well, today is the day I go to court. I'm compiling all my documents right now, and I'm really hoping I can get out of this. I don't have the $95.50 to spare (I'm a college student..), and I really don't need 4 points on my license (insurance would go up.. argh..). I do not believe I violated the cited statute, and even at that, the statute seems to apply more to blatant disregard, such as making a U-Turn where is is posted as illegal, or just over a hill, which is just plain dumb. I do not believe I endangered anyone with my manuver, and I saw no indication that it was illegal. Hopefully the judge will agree with me. The law says any driver in either direction within 750 feet must be able to see the vehicle making the U-turn, and I believe I satisfied that condition. Here is a link to a pic of the area. I was travelling southbound, did a U-turn at this intersection, and continued northbound. The traffic and weather conditions pictured here are VERY similar to when I got the ticket, as I took the pictures the next day at the same time, ~2:30pm. (I don't really remember what, it was just too damn cold here in Chicago at the time for me to do it myself) I get the car back, and I notice a dent in the hood - made from the underside. I eyeball it, and sure enough, it lines up with the air plenum. Some jag-stick had probably left a tool on the plenum and either tried to close the hood, or it fell - whatever. I take it back in, and show the service manager. He went into the shop, but nobody remembered anything happening that might have caused it. Of course. So they said to bring it back in sometime, and the guys from Dent Busters/Wizard/Gurus would fix it. I took it in last Thursday, and they had it for one day. Came out perfect, the dealer picked up the tab as they should have. The next day I was out driving around, and I was having problem with my CD changer. The first CD wouldn't play, for obvious reasons - it was gone. I had 2 CDs stolen out of my car (one from changer, one from glovebox) while it was at the shop. So I called up the "service" manager this morning, and he said the car was taken off site to the Dent guys to have the work done. His resolution to the problem? "Well, I have left a message with the manager of Dent Wizard, but I doubt he will find out who took them. I guess you should have taken them out of your car before bringing it in." What the f*ck kind of customer service is this? Has anyone else out there had anything taken from their car while it was in the shop? Certainly if they send it off site to have something done, they are responsible for it. It is only a couple of CDs, but that is a small price to pay to keep my patronage. Duane will probably chip in with more/better info, but from my own ad hoc investigations there ain't no such thing as a cheap/affordable lift. Twin post lifts are $2K-$3K and scissors are not a hell of a lot cheaper (they give you the lower rise you appear to need). In some ways I understand and agree with this as a lift is not something you want them to cut corners on (Whoops! Was that your car dropping on you from 5 feet? Sorry!), but it does put it out of the range of a casual UUC upgrade...
