If you have the OBC-lite (just time/date/outside temp) like my former '87 325 had, the OBC is held in by four philips screws, from behind the dash panel. Remove the radio (make sure you have the code) and drop the glove box. There's a panel to the left of the glove box that comes out, then you can get access to all the screws. Make sure you use a magnetic (ask me how I know) stubby screwdriver and remove the screws. Pop the OBC toward the front of the car and remove the wiring plug. On the backside there are two, recessed bulbs which come out with some needle-node pliers. Replace both bulbs while you're in there (around $2 each at the dealer). Assemble in reverse order. If you have OBC-heavy (mpg, etc.) YMMV. Dear Digesters, I went to my local NJ dealership for an oil change on my 1991 325ic today. They used 15-40 oil on my car. In the past, I've either used 10-40 or 20-50 but never 15-40. Being that my car has 117,700 miles and requires adding a quart every 3000 miles or so, I asked the parts guy if they carry such oil but he told me since they buy engine oil in bulk, they don't sell them by the quart. I went to my local auto parts store and found some Castro 15-40. It says on my label that this type of oil suits both gasloline engines on cars and diesel engines for trucks. It also mentions something about for "heavy duty" cars. It's certainly different from the regular Castro GTX (10-40 or 20-50). Should I be concerned? The owner of the company (Alan Sheridan) and his chief tuner (Tony Devos) will be coming over from New Zealand at the end of March for the Sema show in Pomona. Following the show, they will be travelling to NJ for a series of meetings and product demos with shop owners and a few magazine journalists. We'll also be meeting with some of the local OEM's (Jaguar, Ferrari....I haven't contacted BMW or Mercedes yet) and other perspective customers to show them what this equipment (the latest version) can do for their shop productivity and race efforts. After all, there are various good reasons for having them on: 1 - driving with fog lights on is something the folks at MT do 2 - driving with fog lights on makes people notice me 3 - driving with fog lights on is kewl And now for some real stuff (or at least my interpretations): (yeah, I know we get lots of this thread every once in a while, but I thought I'd write some of my perspective down, I had this idea of using it as a side article in our club newsletter) 1 - for those that think that driving with fog lights on in regular driving (with headlights on etc. as is normal US situation), you might want to think again about the lights improving your vision and visibility. The fog lights do actively light up a limited amount of road closer to your car, but if that's what you are using when you are driving and thinking you are being safer, think again. You are not watching far enough down the road, and you are depending on a false sense of security by using that close to the car region for more 'safety'. 2 - fog lights really are meant just for fog. At least the good ones like the factory ones that come on BMWs. They have a specific pattern to spread the light low in front of the car for use while driving in fog at low speeds. (Sorry, that's what they taught me at driving school in Germany in 1968, where fog lights are regulated. YMMV) 3 - Having fog lights on along with your regular lights does not improve your safety as far as oncoming traffic is concerned. Sure, your first response is that you are more visible, and that may be partly true, but what is more important, and has more impact is that despite what we like to think, most of us have our vision affected by that other car with all the lights on. So much so that it may affect our driving safety. Just go out and watch what goes on next time. The extra glare affects your vision, and you don't recover fast enough. And as for in the daytime, well, it doesn't help, it may even hinder proper judgment of distance and space, so why take the risk. 4 - one of the things people claim fog lights do, is make them visible. Well, yeah, but to me its one of the kinds of visible I don't want, the kind where the local constabulary (aka the Crown Vic crowd) seem to have an affinity for cars that draw attention to themselves, so you can count me out when it comes to that. Just think in terms of a line of cars that is approaching the officer... you have more of a chance of standing out with those fog lights on, and who's he going to pick all else being equal. 5 - fog lights to me speak marketing. Yeah, those marketing types who are trying to make their cars kewl on the commercials, so you see cars in all kind of non fog situations with their fog lights on. I mean how else are you supposed to let the consumer know that the car has fog lights. If they do it in the commercials it must be right and ok and the kewl thing to do for average joe. 6 - in the European countries that made fog lights popular (even mandated in some cases), their use is regulated. They have an intended purpose for specific visual conditions. If I remember correctly, Germany and other countries will actually issue tickets for improper use of fog lights, i.e. for that 'kewl look' or as the Germans call it 'Boeser Blick'. Poor judgment / etiquette? The rules (at least here in Canada, although not enforced much) are the same on this side of the pond, and I would think that most respectable bimmer drivers would not run with their fog lights on when their is no fog. Just one persons point of view, based on what I see and learned. (At least we get fog occasionally so I do get a chance to use the lights sometimes.)
