I guess now is not a good time to tell you that it takes 30 seconds and one
tiny flat head screwdriver to do this job?

The clock (OBC-lite, as you refer to it) comes out the front of the dash. No
need to dismount it's housing from the rear.

Howdy,
I taped the BMW celebrity challenge. Does anyone want to see it,
as I can (I think) convert it to RealMedia format for Realplayer. It was
quite an entertaining race :-), a few prangs, lots of 'sideways movement'

Cheers.

>1991 325ic

Michael - probably not. What you got at the autoparts store is
Castrol RX-Super 15-40. This is oil I've used with great success
in all my BMW's (bikes and cars) up until I got the M - which comes
with synthetic which BMW changes for free. RX-Super is good stuff.

What I would want to know is what brand of bulk oil did the
dealer put in? While oils are supposed to be 'compatible',
hopefully he'll know what type it is - and then perhaps you
can find some in a store.. chances are fairly good that it
*IS* RX-Super since this is normally sold in bulk (it's 'fleet
oil' - used a lot by bus and truck companies) and it only comes
in the 15-40 weight (which most other oils don't come in..)

Rolf made an excellent post. Many excellent points.

I want to make sure that there is no confusion on my stance on the
indiscriminate use of fog lights. I have used the fog lights that are on my
3 vehicles a total of about 3 hours in the past 12 months (one long drive in
heavy fog). I think that they affect oncoming driver's night vision in a
negative way.

I felt the need to clarify my position since a post was made chastising me
for using my foglights too much (it was in error).

This is from this morning's Contra Costa Times, quoting the Times Wire
Service:

"MELBOURNE, Australia - Mika Hakkinen won the pole for the Australian
Grand Prix with a fast lap of 130.991 mph over the 3,295-mile road
course."

By my calculations, just one lap would take 25.154 hours. Now THAT'S
one hell of a road course!

SNOOP - AGP#8 Barrichello And Button Fastest in F1 Warmup Shannon's
SuperSports Start And Finish Just That Fast

Sunday morning was warm and sunny around the scenic
Albert Park and the Qantas Australian Grand Prix was drawing
in crowds in heaps. The forecast calls for fine weather
with sunny periods Sunday morning, but with clouds
increasing in the afternoon. No likelihood of morning rain,
but 5-10% chances exist for the afternoon.

RUBENS BARRICHELLO/Ferrari was the fastest in the
Formula One Warm Up at 1:31.225/209.171 kph. He said he "felt
he had good balance." His teammate MICHAEL SCHUMACHER
tested both his primary and backup cars twice, but no
announcement yet on which car he will race. Schumacher did say
that he felt both chassis felt very evenly matched. He was
eighth fastest in the warmup, but it wasn't announced in
which car he set the time.

The surprise of the morning was JENSON BUTTON/Williams
who ran second fastest. He said "I wish this had been
yesterday." He had an oil leak in his race car and took a run in
his backup car, and then went back to his primary car,
setting his runner up fast time at that point.

RALF SCHUMACHER/Williams drove off course, damaging
his nose wing. After that he suffered too much understeer,

JOHNNY HERBERT/Jaguar continues to have a bad hair
weekend. He stopped on course, the only one to do so during
the thirty-minute session; and for a moment, it looked
as though he was going to kick the tires. He brought up the
rear of the time sheets. It was said to be having "unspecified
preparation problems,' but later PAUL STEWART/Jaguar said
that it was gearbox problems again. Stewart would not
confirm or deny that the gearbox would be completely
replaced.

HEINZ-HARALD FRENTZEN/Jordan punctured a tire, cutting into his warmup
time.

All of the cars which have been checked by Scrutineering
for weight, fuel, tyres, electronics have been found to
be in conformity. The cars of Hakkinen and Michael
Schumacher were given an especially thorough going-over on
Friday for more than ten items and all was in conformity with
2000 FIA Formula One Technical Regulations. Also checked
were the cockpit exit time and clearance of the F1 driver's
knees with no problems under Article 13.1 and 13.3,
respectively, of the Technical Rugs.

To clarify some confusion among various media folks,
Schumacher went into the wall drivers left and it was the left
not right side of his car which was damaged, and his wheels
stayed on. Coulthard had a wheel come off in his white flag
qualifying lap Saturday, but it remained within two meters
of the car, tethered as meant. The same can be said for the
wheel on Button's car Saturday in the same qualifying
session - it came off but remained tethered, close to the
car.

Shortly after F1 warmup, the Shannon's SuperSports
race began and ended just that fast. An accident during
the start involved three of the Can-Am cars. The McLaren
M8D of NIGEL BARRETT locked up its right front brake
caliper, stalling him long enough for CHRIS CHILES/March
717 to rear end Barrett. IAN BARROWMAN/Toj was also caught
up, and the ensuing melee caused the stewards to Red Flag
and ultimately cancel the race. All drivers are alright.
Also good news is that the car damage is surprisingly
light, given the circumstances. All will be racing in a few
weeks time for their next SuperSports event at Spa.

Subject: [uuc] Awesome iX Experience

I don't post to this list unless I have a technical question, but this
is different. I live in central Indiana, and last Monday afternoon it
was 75 degrees outside when my wife and I saw a beautiful 89 325iX on a
used car lot in the Indy area. After studying the car for over an hour
and test driving it, we bought it and took it home. We already have two

E30 convertibles, but I have always been fascinated by the thought of
having an iX. Well, it proceeded to snow about 6 or 8 inches this
afternoon! I had to drive 45 miles to a sectional basketball final game

tonight (my kids team won), and that car was absolutely awesome! The
car happens to have Bridgestone Blizzaks on it, and I had heard lots of
mention of them here on this list. The thing really pulls like a
tractor in this thick wet snow -- nothing can stop it, except maybe a
huge snow drift. Now that I have been able to test the iX, I'm ready to

go back to spring like weather!

Best regards,

Steve Conner

The eldest Schumacher seems to have more of the "Force" within him...

Also, Williams-BMW (BMW-Williams?) is being realistic and is not a title
contender this year. I think they'll be happy if they can make a podium
finish before years end.

Last I read, the BMW engine was overweight and less tidy in terms of
packaging compared to the Ilmor/M-B, Ferrari and Ford-Cosworth engines.
Power output may be down slightly too.

2000 is a developmental year for BMW and even mighty Honda...

I'm guessing that this is a result from the Australian GP? If so, I know
this is hard, please don't share. Some of us are still waiting 8 hours to

Subject: [uuc] Your foglight post

Congratulations and welcome to the club! I've been given clearance by the
powers that be to let you in on a little secret. Please note that this is
not to be shared with anyone. There's a little club here that is extremely
exclusive and we would be honored if you would join us. You have been
carefully screened and selected from thousands of fellow BMW owners by
stringently adhering to our sole criterion: you do not use your foglights
*except when it's foggy out*! This may seem mundane, but, believe me, it is
far less common than you might imagine. Take a look around you and observe
how many BMWs do not actually their foglights at night. Alarmingly few,
correct? Those few people that you do see that aren't using their lights
are, in all likelihood, fellow members of our little club and they too
enjoy the rights and privileges that this membership entitles you to.
Once you are a member in good standing, you will learn the secret wave (no
longer just a single digit) and will have a standing invitation to the
gatherings, parties and free track days. You will have complete access to
the club house and sky boxes, plus we will provide complimentary passes to
the power breakfasts and luncheons. Naturally the %75 club discount is
available on all BMW parts and accessories. In addition, you will be flown
to any and all F1 races with transportation, lodging and pit passes
provided by us. There is but a sole caveat: if you are spotted with your
foglights on in anything other than foggy conditions (FOGlights! Repeat
with me "FOOOOGlights!") you will have your rights immediately rescinded
and will be returned to the somewhat ironic status of "Unenlightened."
You will be contacted shortly with instructions on how to complete your
membership application. There is no fee associated with any of this, as it
is we who are honored by your good grace. Again, congratulations, you truly
deserve it.
