Howdy,
Oh the topic of what car we would like to see, I have a few
suggestions.

1. Duanne's 318tds (So the M* Kib*orts of the world could ask Bimmer what
it was)
2. E30 with Twin Turbo S62.

Hey power is good right?

Cheers.

Can anyone tell me the mechanical differences between the Sports package
suspension and the normal suspension on E39's? I know it's lower and larger
wheels, but are there larger sway bars, different spring rates..etc Thanks
to all in advance.

Interesting cars from UUC management? Yes. But only a few thousand of
them would sell a year. At three times the price. Never underestimate
the power of marketing.

Also, Ford, if it were to buy out BMW, would understand the power of
the BMW brand and surely wouldn't try to influence wedge its way in
there. Its handling of the Jaguar buyout was very successful and it's
probably the best thing that ever happened to Jaguar. From what I
heard, its very independently run. It just now has the facilities of
Ford research money and facilities. No, you will not see an SVT XK8 --
you get an XKR.

Comments are welcome.

Chaz,
I completely agree. Ford (alone among the US based car firms) is run by
car guys or at least guys that listen to the car guys. I think that BMW and
Ford would fit well together. It just might happen if the Quandt family can
find a way to protect a reasonable amount of the proceeds from the tax
collectors.
As you and I know, the reality is that BMW cannot remain independent for
much longer. Let's hope the successful suitor is one that will nurture the
brand.

Don,

Well, I ain't no bizness type, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express
last night.

Seriously, I think you're closer to the truth ("who knows what evil lurks
in the minds of men") than the WSJ. My guess would be that BMW saw this
as an opportunity to undertake a market extension type of conglomerate
merger. Lots of buzz words but it just means get something in related
product in a non-competing market. They accomplished that, as even the X5
is not a substitute for Land Rover products. However, pretty clearly ex
post it was a bad decsion. Most would probably argue it was a bad decsion
ex ante. Guess who gets to pay for this error in judgement, fellow
Bimwads. Go ahead and order that new M3 or whatever.

In retrospect, there might have been a fighting chance if BMW had tried
to instill the German magic/technology, etc. into the off roaders with
design and engineering changes. Could'a called it a Bover (for Bovarian
Motor Werks). Instead of a Bover, they got a Boner! <g>

Guess I'll just stay with who brung me.

I posted a few months ago asking about shifter choices. I ordered
the Comp kit on an impulse, but after some consultation with the guys
from UUC Motorwerks (thanks, Rob), I decided I'd be better off with
the street kit. I just got the thing installed last weekend. Damn,
should've done this before. Smooth, short, gorgeous shifts. It's
the way God and BMW intended. Even got compliments from the
instructors who drove my car at FATT yesterday. Good stuff -- nice
work, Rob and Ben.

Subject: [uuc] <E30> Seat Repair Question

I have a couple of E30 seat repair questions.

1. Have an 89 iX with base seats. These have one lever on the sides
for adjusting seat height and seat back recline. The seat back recline
part will not lock. You can easily move the seat back and hear a
clicking noise caused by something not engaging something else fully.
There is a large plastic cover over the hinge area, which appears to be
held on by a large plastic nut type of fastener, but removing that does
not allow the cover to be removed. Any tips on this before I break
something? Wil removing this cover reveal the culprit mechanism?

2. Have a 91 318iC with cloth sport seats. The seat covers are rotten
and I have the new factory covers to replace them. Has anyone done this
themselves or is this best left to a good upholstery shop?

Any and all advice is welcome. I have looked at all the faq's, but
can't find anything on these subjects. TIA.

From: "Harmon W. Fischer" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: [uuc] Engine washing

I've kept my BMW engines clean since 1971. Currently on my
third E36. Here's my procedure:
* Start cold engine - run 3-4 minutes at idle, turn off.
* Place Saran wrap around major electrical items: cruise control,
diagnostic connectors. Use rubber bands to secure Saran wrap.
* Spray everything under the hood with aerosol Gunk, but DO NOT
spray the soft under hood liner. Use at least one 19.2 oz can, two
if engine is very dirty. Aerosol Gunk can be obtained at Autozone/
Pep Boys/DAP for about $1 per can.
* Air filter housing can be first removed to better get at lower reaches
of the block, but be sure to put Saran wrap on opening to throttle body.
* Use 2" paint brush to spread Gunk into any heavy dirt/oil buildup.
Should not be necessary after first complete cleaning of very dirty
engine. Do this to entire engine compartment/inner fender walls.
* Use medium water spray from hose to wash engine. Don't panic
when white water results - this is natural.
* If under hood liner is dusty, spray with plain water.
*  When dry, apply Meguiar's # 40 Vinyl & Rubber Cleaner/Conditioner
with a clean rag to all black plastic parts. Obviously, other brands
of plastic treatments might suffice.
* Repeat every 2 - 4 months, depending upon driving conditions and
incidence of oil leaks.
I have NEVER had a resulting problem on an E36 after washing when
the above cautions are observed. Years ago, sometimes I would get
the distributor on a 2002 wet, and had to remove the cap and dry out
the inside.

Subject: [uuc] which is the hot ticket??

I have a chipped 86 528e. It is an all around nice car.
I try to do about 95% of all my mainteneance and am a pretty good diy'er.
I like the rugged and simple E28 for cost and dependability.
But, I also like nwer leather interiors and quiet cars which are quick.
So, what should my next car be.....
I want to spend below $15k.
The 525i, too slow???
I would love a 530it, but I want a 5 speed.
Aw, how about the 530i with 5 speed? Is this car rugged and dependable,
ratttle free????
Can a serious diy'er do fine on one?

A whole bunch of questions and opinions if anyone cares to share their
experience.

Thanks,

Of course someone has one that will do this, AND beating up on a pore
ole Focus with an '02 with an M42 motor in it wasn't exactly a fair
comparison.

You know, someone somewhere has a 65 Rambler with a Donovan big-block
in it that will beat a Viper too! AND, even if you were driving
around in a Focus that could beat an M3, you would have to race all
the M3's you could find to keep from having to admit that at the end
of the day, it's still a silly little econobox that looks vaguely
Daewoo-ish...

<grin>

As with Cody's original humorous post, I was jest kiddin' around, but
we all are here on this UUC list, (instead of the USC list - that's
Underground Stylin' Club for the put-a-wing-on-it-and-go-cruising
crowd) not because BMW's are always the fastest, or always win every
race; we are here because the entire package, the entire car is
different, in important ways, than appliancemobiles like Hondas and
Foci's. (innat the plural of Focus?) Should the spirit of the car
ever be changed, (and FWD would certainly do that) many of us will
lose interest in the marque.

Look at Jag-oo-ar. Has not Ford done a good job of updating the
line? Haven't they even made Lucas, the Prince of Darkness, deliver
quality electrics for the first time in history? Doesn't Ford
deserve praise for this? But look closer and you will see nothing
but luxury, luxury, luxury.... the only thing missing is Ricardo
Montalban and the Rich Corinthian Leather... (but YOU dahling look
mahvelous!)

XJ8, Vanden Plas, (what a goofy name!), XJR, XK8, XKR, S-Type, yadda
yadda, all automatics-only.

Do you want Ford telling you that there is no manual trans available
in the M5 any longer??? yikes!

Yeah yeah, I know what the F1 drivers use... blah blah... I want my
manual trans! And BMW supplies it, in a group of what are surely
the best cars, overall, on earth.

Go by the Jag-oo-ar booth at a car show and ask why there's no manual
trans, and you will get superior-looking smirks all 'round. The
same smirks the folks at the Foad booth were giving ten years ago
when they said that manuals are "obsolete"... Surprised there's no
manuals in the Jag-oo-ar line?

BMW needs to stay independent.

Subject: [uuc] Removing Fan...Help!

I'm in the process of changing my timing belt, tensioner, water pump, etc. on
my '88 325is and need to get my fan off now...but as I turn the large nut
behind the fan, the entire unit spins. how do I keep everything tight so that
just the bolt loosens itself. What I'm say is that the nut that is behind the
fan is attached to a shaft that runs through the engine...when I turn the
nut, the entire shaft spins; and therefore, I'm not getting anywhere. In
order to loosen the nut to remove the fan, the shaft must be stationary, or
tightened down w/ something. What should I do here? Thanks so much
Chris Reynolds
PS It's like have trying to take off the wheel on your bike...you hafta hold
the nut on one side of the axle still and turn the other nut to loosen the
wheel. The problem here is I can't keep the shaft still to loosen the nut.
Hope you can understand this and help.
