Good deal huh? But The Wall Street Journal doesn't see it that way. (Today's column one story) They are saying that this sale is evidence of the failure of BMW's bid to remain independant, and that it is now just a matter of time before BMW must align itself with some mega-giant like Foad if it is to survive... I don't see how this is the case. BMW bought Rover because it had the money to buy Rover, because it was so successful at it's core business. Seems to me that continuing to succeed at its core business will put them once again, back in a healthy position fairly quickly, and therefore make them less likely to be bought out. But hey I am not the WSJ What do some of you business types think? Is the WSJ right, or do they misunderstand those who purchase these cars, and fail to understand the loyalty we have towards them? (which could prove disastrous to sales should BMW simply become a "brand" rather than a car) DC - -- __________________________________________ Don Cicchetti CCA member - guitar player '71 02/M42 "Ingrid" -Beatnik Motor Works- __________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Mar 2000 17:43:48 AKST From: "dave pizza" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [uuc] new 2 series With all this talk of a new compact car, I am curious if anyone has heard anything about what Nissan was doing with the old/awesome 240Z's? I guarantee that my E39 550IS won't put you to sleep on a 0-60 run. One of the reasons I bought this car was for that old fashioned V-8 sound (and torque). Put the electonic throttle control to the metal and you get that sound along with the sound of very expensive Michelin Pilots leaving their compound on the ground in little particles. 2. To the uninitiated, the car > looks almost identical to a 528i sport (which is not necessarily a bad > thing). YES!!! Stealth is good. The "quietness" of the car is my main gripe. This one is quiet until you hit the go pedal. What you don't realize is, you can hit the go pedal on this car 1/2 way, run away from everything in sight, not look like you are even working hard, and do a 0-60 that will beat almost everyone on the street. Pedal to the metal gets every cop in town on your a$$. Ohhh! Can I be a "family member" of yours and get the discount too!? Hell, I'd sell my house for the pleasure of walking into Erhardt, picking out a new 750 or Z8, then, after they got drooling real good, mention "Oh yeah, this is a purchase plan deal, so you won't get squat." On the acquisition vien, a friend of mine from DaimlerChrysler called a few weeks ago, and mentioned the hot rumor was that they were buying Fiat. "What do they make?" he asked. When I said "Ferrari, among other things.", I could see his eyes light up through the phone. Thank God they weren't part of the deal with GM. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Mar 2000 23:26:23 EST From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [uuc] Re: Yoko A520's << What do you all think about the yokohama A520's?? Performance is about as good as Yok's top dog street tire, but the trade off for the lower price is more noise and slightly harsher ride. Wear is pretty decent, too. It is scary to think about a Ford takeover and the inevitable X5 Eddie Bauer Edition (with tan plastic trim), but not as bad as a GM takeover with a top of the line 750il Supreme Fleetwood Brougham (with a half vinyl roof, fake wire wheels and gold style sidewall tires). As one of the UUC board members I would vote for a new M5 TS4 (a M5 Touring with a 500hp supercharged engine and full time 4 wheel drive). I'm sure that under UUC ownership BMW would make a lot more interesting cars. When the car blew past me it was amazingly quite- very > little exhaust note. The EC has decided that cars that make enough noise to actually be heard are antisocial. Ergo, the M5 (and Ferrari 360, and Porsche Carrera, and etc...) have to devote almost as much undercar space to mufflers as to engine in order to have an exhaust system that's legally quiet and can still flow enough to support a 400hp engine.
